Does living off the grid interest you? Why or why not? 👇

@Jonathan Pal Hey Jonathan, your concerns are what many people have. Wells can be very expensive, but you won’t expect it to break anytime soon as they typically will have a life span of at least 25 years. There are options for water storage tanks in the cold as well. Insulate it, have a water heater of some kind. The cheapest way would be to reinforce it with insulation. Don’t get me wrong, Michigan has a lower cost of living, but there’s still most certainly a large price tag for homes, lands and rents these days, just based on how the market is right now. Keep researching, make a GREAT plan and do yourself a favor and go against your current mindset and be patient. You don’t want to rush into something like this. Good things take time 👍

I am 80 in very good health. I live in Florida but was born in the Upper Peninsula. I would have moved back long ago but my wife does not like the isolation and the cold winters. I return every year often more than once. I am now considering a small lot on an inland lake or fishable river, say the Manistique, or Escanaba. I also love to grouse hunt. Deer hunting doesn't interest me much. I would use it as a place to camp for several weeks each year and leave it to my grandchildren. I am leaving each of them a home in Florida, and I would like to leave them a vacation getaway in the U.P. I'm from Munising, but I like the area around Paradise or the Big Two Hearted best. The burnover does not bother me, because I can live with scrubby jack pines on my land until the sun sets. If you have any ideas, I'm listening.

Thank you, this was a good video! I had a plan for buying land and placing a tiny home or a custom camper on it surrounded by a large deck, and then I found out that Michigan does not recognize those small structures as a permit residence. Bummer. I love this state, but they crushed my dream. I also did not want a well or a septic. I planned on having water storage in a well insulated shed and using compost toilets. But I see that Michigan requires a septic and running water. Another let down. I fell in love with the U.P. and wanted the land somewhere between Marquette and Munising. Maybe I should look into another state that offers the freedoms that I want. I doubt I can find the beauty that I found in the U.P. I love lake Superior.

Glad it provided you some value! Yes, unfortunately they do have those regulations, but people compromise with it to have the beauty this state offers as you mentioned.

I plan on moving back to Michigan and want to live in the UP. You certainly highlighted some very important issues to be considered, some I had not thought of. I am curious why you only highlighted the Keweenaw as being one of the preferred places in the UP?
@LivingInMichigan
2 жыл бұрын
Hello Rodney! First off, thanks for watching and subscribing to my channel, it's greatly appreciated. I hope you can follow that plan of yours and plant your roots in a new place with ease! The reason I highlighted Keweenaw, is due to the popularity of off the grid living there. I have heard/read it is a very popular spot, solely for the reason that the population density is one of the lowest (if not lowest) in the state of Michigan, which is a BIG appeal. With that in mind, demand isn't as high, which in turn has made the land more affordable. Those two reasons alone are enough to have people seriously considering the area for off-grid living. On top of that, I would assume there's some ease with doing so in the county.

@@LivingInMichigan Thanks for your reply. I think living off grid has a lot of different meanings. Isolation, as you pointed out is certainly appealing to some. Personally, the idea of being self-sufficient is what I find most appealing. But I fully intend to take advantage of the new technology in solar and wind to do so. The natural beauty and resources of the Upper Peninsula is truly under appreciated.

@@rodneysoule671 Very true! It does have numerous meanings, but I would agree that it’s more about being self-sufficient than being isolated. The main appeal is saving money and self-dependency I’d say. I believe the U.P is very underrated in that aspect. Outsiders tend to get tunnel vision about winters and turn their heads the other way.

First two things i would buy is a Tractor and a snow blower attachment for it. Then i would get a snow mobile just in case. And the first thing on this video that would have been helpful for the conent matter would have been a list of county's you can live off grid on. Which is what i was looking for.

I'm planning to build a house and shop with solar power, Solar and Geothermal in floor heat for an ICF house. Looks like selling solar power to the grid is completely worthless in Michigan. They pay less than 30% what they charge. ($0.02643 to $0.03118 / kw-h paid for Locational Marginal Price) My plan would be to just buy land and build the shop with the solar generation first. Then build the house after. Instead of having to pay for running power a long distance. I could toss that money into an oversized PV system with large battery.

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, AWESOME VIDEO, NEW SUB... I have a questhen. I recently purchased 10 acres in Jackson, Michigan. If I wanted to put in a single point well, ( sand point well ) myself, would that be legal? I'm not using it for drinking water just more to have some water on the property. So would I need a permit or could I just put it in myself?

Thank you so much for watching! It’s funny you ask, I was just dealing with a similar inquiry with someone else in terms of creating a well for water that’s not planned to be consumed. I have the verbiage still: -Most counties require a health department permit including a requirement for the work to be done by a licensed well driller, even if the well won’t be used for drinking water. This is to ensure the well installation does not contaminate the aquifer. Check with your county office to determine if a permit is needed. -Once your well installation is complete, you will need to file an annual water use report by April 1 with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). Agricultural users do not have to pay a fee for the annual reporting.

@LivingInMichigan Wow, thank you so much for responding my friend. And it's so funny because I have literally watched dozens of videos where homeowners and people like myself who have recreational land have simply just did all the work themselves so I thought that to some degree, I would be able to do the work without going through all of the paperwork and permits. 🤔 I would definitely say if you did a video on "Can you drill your own single point well" it would be very helpful for a lot of people because I have heard SO MANY MIXED thoughts on this. Thanks again for responding and keep up the great work. Love the content.
