$200+ for a gym membership seems really expensive. Is that normal in NYC, or is there a lot included in the membership?
@evonstwenties

@@aaabbbccc985 hey! I would say there is no norm in NYC, it just depends on what you're looking for out of a gym. You can join Blink or Planet Fitness for as low as $10 a month or Equinox for as high as around $300+/month. NYC will also offer everything in between. For me (as a beginner), the gym I chose offers only HIIT group classes which is the best option for me because I need the group setting to be motivated. Which gym you choose may also depend on the options in your immediate neighborhood. It's way more convenient to find a gym in your neighborhood or right by your office than one that you have specifically take the subway and travel to. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

I like how even making six figures can't afford you your own pad in NYC, that's just insane anywhere else. I was on the same track living in California, and saw how little my newly minted six fig salary actually meant. Moved out during COVID to a mid market city not by the coast, and life has been much better.

What i observed is 100k income and living in new York is good only to single people. But building Family even having 1 child only, i think the 100k a year isn't yet enough.

I'm not in NYC but this had me thinking, if you're spending circa 975 on rent on a 100k salary, I have absolutely no business spending £1k/rent on less than that! 😩😅. Very helpful video, considering relocating so this helps with numbers.

Glad it was helpful! I do want to say that $900/month in NYC is an outlier. My room is very tiny and it works with my lifestyle but may not work for others. I will be doing a tour of my room/apartment soon to show viewers what $900/month looks like. Most in NYC spend closer to $1500/month. There is no right or wrong, just personal preference :D

Good point about working out. My son is better mentally because he works out regularly at Barry's. Before that, he was very depressed. He actually spends about $2,700 for his own one bedroom apartment in Brooklyn and he feels better living solo than with roommates (he lived with roommates for three months and could not stand it. He was paying about $1100 for his room and use of the common areas).

The path of least resistance would be to have a job lined up in NYC and then move. When you apply to apartments in NYC, almost all of them will ask for proof of income. Without a job lined up, it will be difficult to be approved for housing!

@evonstwenties

typically in the US when people talk about salary it's discussed in terms of gross salary. In reality what's on hand is more than 45K if you also factor in the amount contributed to my HSA (health savings) and 401K (retirement)

20% of her income, which is taken out for the 401 K, would be $1,700 a month. Her numbers definitely don't add up. I honestly don't believe her.🤔

@@amyrenee1361 to clarify when I made this video I was contributing $2,200 before tax per month to my 401K. This means I was on the path to over contributing to my 401K so that’s why my take home pay after subtracting 401K, HSA, insurance, and commuter benefits, was lower than one would expect. Since then I did update my contribution so that my take home pay per month is approximately $4,400.
