I commend you on your simplification of life and living. My wife and myself have simplified over the past few years as well. No credit cards...no car payment...no consumer loans etc. We owe on our home (includes a shop on property for our business)....but we are down to three day work week. We spend the remainder of our time in ministry work and other things we chose to spend our time on. With that being said....you arent accounting for inflation, the need for car replacement at some point, or even home maintenance (which can be costly depending on the repair needed....ie: new roof). Just some things to consider, but I like the direction you are going. Society has said that we need all this “stuff”...but then everyone waste their life away working for the crap they don’t really want or need to begin with.

Shopping at Walmart where I get more than food makes it tedious to look through my receipts, but maybe I'll try. I do know I spend about $250 per month there, but it's on groceries and little things like cough medicine, notebooks, etc. I think I'm going to try it though. Thanks for the inspiration!

10:03 you could save even more money on groceries by growing your own fruit and vegetables, like strawberries and potatoes 2 of many examples, all you really need is one potato that has a lot of shoots or "eyes" growing out of it and a container of dirt or potting mix and you can grow a whole bunch of potatoes with no effort whatsoever. Tomatoes are easy to grow as well, all you need is one tomato to start with cut it open and scoop out the seeds and then dry them out and then you can plant them and grow tomatoes. There's a whole lot of videos on youtube about growing your own fruit and vegetables by harvesting the seeds from store bought fruit and vegetables and planting these seeds to grow your own. @Erik Schmunzeler If you are a retiree then you will have all the time in the world to experiment and even if you aren't retired you can do this on the weekends, by resources do you mean for example space to grow different things, pots, dirt, potting mix, fertilizer etc. because it will depend on what you want to grow, growing things like root vegetables is I think rather easy, but you really need a backyard to be able to grow other things like bananas, papaya or mangoes for example. "Isn't it just cheaper to buy them ?" If you grow your own you will end up saving money in the long run, you could also then if you want to, sell your home grown fruits and vegetables to friends and family so you could end up making money. Also if you grow your own you then don't have to go to the supermarket or fruit and vegetable store to buy these things, which will free up your time to do other things you will also save money on gas because you wouldn't have to drive anywhere to buy fruit and vegetables anymore. Do a youtube search on growing your own herbs, fruit and vegetables to see how easy it is.

You can get 12%+ annual dividend yield from low-volatility common stocks like REITs or even preferred stocks that pay monthly dividends, and insure them against stock depreciation if it goes down in value, protecting your principal entirely while still being able to collect the dividends; even if the dividends get cut you will be able to sell without losing your principal if you do it correctly. 2.5% in a bank account isn't worth it, IMHO.

I live in New York State and my annual property taxes are around $800... My heating bill is around 900 per year.. and my average electric bill is about $45... I'm in Thailand right now during a 2 1/2 month winter break and next year will drain the water in my home so I don't have the heating bill or the snow removal...I'm cheap.. I love watching people who have the same "I don't have to impress anyone approach to life." Our eating habits are very similar... Thanks for the video...

Why is your health insurance $310 per month? Is that because it is really expensive in California, or do you have a pre-existing condition? I ask because I see ads all the time online for $100 and $150/ month insurance plans.

I mentioned this on another video but don't automatically downsize your house when your kids leave. We thought about it but put our basement on airbnb instead. That is the source of most of our income now. We have backup if airbnb falls in the toilet. Also you can find all kinds of full length movies on youtube. The only tv I pay for is amazon prime and there are so many other benefits to that (free fast shipping) that I think it's worth the fee.

I love this guy! I say it because he makes the video so simple, straight to the point. Not like others where you know they are so fake you can hear this guy be sincere and thats what caught my attention. I have to say I am impressed to live off in estimate for $13k in the bay area in California is amazing. The houses in that area are insane expensive. Also your HOA and the property tax at that price is super low. I give you props the way you live so frugal is crazy. Also I don't know how you do it without a smartphone man. I cant live without one thats an expensive I just need. I also live in California and own my home. That is the biggest factor to win owning your own home in the end of the day. If you suck at investing than atleast buy a home because the day you own your home that will help you live a better life style when you retire. For me I pay around $160 a month for property tax estimate and thats a cost that will keep going up as time goes by as you mentioned. The thing with me is I don't plan to retire yet I plan to work for atleast another 10 to 20 years and call it quits. I lost my job so I don't have health insurance as of now I am just working part time and getting unemployment. So I am gambling it their, but if things go well I should be getting a good state job within the new few months and be set. But as you I don't plan to work for the rest of my life I do plan to put some time and get the state retirement even if its not at 100 percent I wont need it if I can get half of that I know I can live with that.
@BeatTheBush

I have a smartphone, I just don't pay a monthly fee so far for the past 10 years? Always managed to get away with not paying. If you live frugally, you can reach retirement goals quickly. If you are almost there, you can even get away with not flooring the gas and earning as much as you can right now. Earn a bit less, take a more enjoyable profession. It's like switching to a better life now.

@@BeatTheBush I feel like its an honor to get a response from youtuber of this channel let me tell you. I am a tech guy and I got a phone plan on my brothers plan I pay $25 I buy the phone upfront don't want to deal with phone payments so its just the service. I like to kind of spoil myself at times (mean on the things I know I like and will use). The only thing that holds me back from retirement is health care. Since I lost my job lost my insurance I never made a crazy amount of money I would just work hard save and buy when I wanted things. I got to save enough to buy a house. Right now I have a part time job. I like it simple and its like usually one full day of work and a quick night (I am also in UE but that will run out within 3 months and if I can extend can get another 6 months). I did a hypothetical and if I was to retire (with current job) I make around $7k net I can live off that money and still save around $100 to $200 a month for emergency funds, but that doesnt include health insurance and thats why I am just a bit worried. Its to much and thats why I wanted to get into a job with good health insurance and put in another 10 to 20 years (I can still go just 31). I am afraid of getting a heavy illness that would basically kill everything I worked for. Keep up the amazing videos I am watching them all!

Only $150/month for food is STUNNING, Mr. BTB! I'm poor as a church mouse in income, but I still spend $400/month on food despite being VERY careful. I don't like to cook (except ultra-quick microwaving), so my time seems better spent *working* THREE hours extra per week (earning $40 maybe) rather than *cooking* FIVE hours per week, like I speculate you do Mr. BTB.

I cook in bulk and mostly 15 mins or so to cook a batch of veggies I can eat for 4-6 meals. Beans are cooked in an instapot which takes 15 mins also to put everything in a push a button. Same with rice/whole grain thing. It's cheap because I rarely buy meat now.

Thanks for that thoughtful reply, Mr. BTB! I frequently DEBATE with myself whether or not to cook food and save money -- but my conclusion is always the same: No way in hell do I want to cook! Better to work a few hours extra per week. (I'm poor but I only work 3 days/week and still save 10K/year. I consider this to be 'The Planet Of The Apes' and I utterly hate mankind for it -- especially its non-stop abuse of myself. So escaping my fellow man [sic] is more a priority than escaping poverty.)
