Time consuming and wears you down physically, mentally and emotionally. My friend was a travel nurse out of college. Made alot of money going up and down the east coast. But it wore her down. Remember with his contracts they are giving him a travel/ food allowance weekly, so it’s ok if he eats out. My biggest concern for him is sustaining stable health insurance. He probably should enroll in one if the Affordable care Act market plans to keep consistent medical insurance, one unpredictable injury or illness between coverage gaps can wipe out his savings! Also at his age he should invest in a IRA account fund, for retirement benefits! He will need supplemental retirement benefits when he reached retirement age, social security will not be enough to cover his expenses. Should also invest some of his money as well. When the college loan is no longer deferred he needs to pay that off too!

The problem with coming from a poor background is that you want to help everyone you know. But you can’t save everyone. Giving away 1,600 may feel good at the moment but the truth is it isn’t sustainable. He isn’t going to be a travel nurse forever. At someone point he won’t be able to travel as much, and he’s going to go back to a normal salary. he should act like his salary is a experiencing a short term boost and invest as much as he can. His property isn’t cash flowing. He should focus on getting better at real estate and start building long term wealth then he’ll be in a position to help people for a sustained time. People who come into money should focus on sustainable giving and not unsustainable giving

Worries me. Too many stories of our black people becoming needy themselves because they were too generous while the money flowed. Rethink gifts to family, and instead have a “private” fund to be generous for legit needs when they come (because they will come). You just don’t seem to be in a position to give scholarships. That time will come, and it’s not when you’re in debt yourself. Real talk, you seem to living the life of a future you. No shade intended at all. When we grow up poor in our community, we start thinking a good salary means we have a lot of discretionary income to give/spend…when that discretionary income should be earmarked for securing our future so that we can then bless family, give scholarships, etc. I’m like you in wanting to do good from an early age. I’m now at a relatively young age where I can and do give generously. If I had done this at your age, i would not be able to be as generous as I am able to be…not then, not now. Putting on your oxygen mask first, as the cliche goes, is not selfish.

48-60 hours a week is unsustainable. Especially in the healthcare world. This is one of the main reasons why burn out is so high in healthcare. Also, he's spending too much. He makes good income, but it doesn't sound like he's using his high income to build wealth. Owning 2 properties and giving away a bunch of his cash to friends and family when he's not even trying to pay off his student loans is not wise. He's assuming the income will always be there. That's a dangerous assumption. He should be saving and investing a big portion of what he makes. But, first he needs to get rid of all of his consumer debt including student loans and that car loan. Charitable giving and real estate investment needs to wait until he has all of his other ducks in a row. He needs to approach it from the angle of building personal wealth now so he can be financially independent later, which would give him the freedom to help his friends and family in a more sustainable way.

He's doing great, I just hope he is building a strong retirement/investment portfolio as well. Real estate is great, but it takes a lot of work to scale it to accelerate your wealth. With the math he is spending about 100-110k a year. He also has to pay tax on the 187k which is about 126k take home. I'm guessing he's able to put about 10k a year to investments/savings a year, but that's really tight. I'm sure part of that 100-110k yearly budget goes to his real estate too. Hopefully that December spending was a high month. Then these contract positions don't have much benefits such as having to pay much more for health insurance and likely not getting any retirement contribution match. Real estate will be great for building an income stream, but he should also have a strong nest egg compounding now when he's young. Right now it is his overtime and travel nursing that is sustaining all his ambition. Trying to settle down will be difficult and he will definitely have to make some cuts when reaches a sustainable salary.
