What are the stages of living with Lewy Body dementia? Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body dementia does not have traditional dementia stages. This video is meant to serve as more of a guide for what to expect when dealing with Lewy Body dementia. This guide is based on a long career of research and personal experience, and will likely not apply 100% to your situation. As with many forms of dementia, people suffering from Lewy Body dementia may experience bad days and good days, which can make knowing if you need to see a professional harder to determine. In our opinion, you should be seeing a neurologist at the first sign of decline. Lewy Body dementia is often misdiagnosed, so be sure to do your due diligence when speaking with a professional. Now, onto the stages:
Stage 1 - Sleeping more during the day hallucinations, REM sleep disorder, Restless leg syndrome, tremors, gate problems, falls, trance-like appearance
Stage 2 - increase in misdiagnosis, risk increase falls and balance problems, autonomic system dysfunction, regulation of blood pressure, regulation of body temperature, fainting spells, dry mouth, trouble with words, paranoia, aggression, anger, hallucinations
Stage 3 - no longer able to work or drive, assistance with ADLs or activities of daily living autonomic functions decreasing, hallucinations, problems concentrating
Stage 4 - motor skills, tremors, sleep disruptions, swallowing, drooling, aspirating, choking, difficulty with speech limited to short simple sentences increased falls, Increase in daytime sleeping hallucinations
Stage 5 - 24 hour supervision, high risk of aspiration transfer assist, inability to regulate body temperature, rigidity
Stage 6 - bedridden, 24-hour constant care, no communication, unable to walk
As you can see, these are less so “stages”, and more so a collection of behaviors and when they are likely to occur during the disease process. Lewy Body dementia is hard to define, but hopefully, this will help you better plan for what’s ahead.
