We are being told and constantly influenced that we need to buy this or that. Watching how the Amish live, is putting life into perspective. We all need to slow down and be appreciative for what we have, and what is around us. Taking the time to pause and give thanks throughout the day, because acknowledging that, makes us present and grounds us.

I'm a wife and mother of two, I'm perfectly happy doing housework and taking care of the kids. There's nothing wrong with being submissive, I am. The girls said that it was slaving for the men. How are the men not then slaving for the women, also doing physically harder work? Are the men lazing around watching the women plow the fields? Real talk - both men & women work hard for the household. If anything, women have it easier in regards to work. My workplace, in construction management, discriminates against men by having a minimum 50% female workplace. We are throwing the baby out with the bathwater in the quest of good intentions.

@@fredfinks you are a man. you have no right to speak on how women "have it easier" because you've never had to live as a woman. there is no such thing as "discrimination against men" because men have been considered dominant over women since humans have existed. please educate yourself before you complain about your workplace accepting more women, because construction management has traditionally favored hiring men more than women, which is quite literally discrimination. it is true that both men and women work hard, but you don't need to put hardworking women down to uplift yourself and other men.

You also have to clean your clothes and take care of bodily maintenance, it's just about living in a healthy environment. I think the problem is that the work is unpaid, esp. in the Amish community. The man is in total financial control even though they both work all day and contribute equally to the family. That is what "de-values woman's work", the actual monetary value afforded to it. And the girl is right, in a Biblical sense as well. Woman was created in God's image, and made as a "helper" for the man. In original Hebrew, the word for helper is only used twice in the Bible. Once for woman to a man, and another for the Holy Spirit as a helper to mankind. The Holy Spirit is not to be dismissed to menial support, such as domestic servitude, and neither are women. There are verses in the Bible detailing a woman worth more than diamonds as a woman who works outside of the home providing for her family financially in a fashion common to people of the day. As well as Paul encouraging men and women to remain single, as well as specifying that in Christ, there is neither man nor woman, free nor slave, Jew nor Gentile. Paul does talk about the "head" of woman is man, but goes on to contradict himself in talking about "beginnings" and that men come from women as well, so as to say not to take the whole thing too far, as society is one to do. And that husbands and wives should treat each other with respect and honor. Christians of the patriarchal leaning tend to highlight certain verses over others, and not try to compare them to each other to reach a full conclusion. The work itself is not the problem, it's the options afforded to women, from a legal and a Biblical standpoint. Women who are subjugated to this extend do so b/c of what's been labeled, "spiritual abuse", or taking women's desire to please God and live a Christ-like life, and twisting it to extremes in order to please men rather than what the Bible actually expects from women.
@roach7017

@John Doe Not in modern society, in a society that values equality, or at least strives toward it. Men and women now have more equality of opportunity and choice in which field to pursue. But you're right, the nature of life itself is very limiting. Currently it's where people of both genders start off in life class/financial-wise that usually dictates what menial roles you are limited to, or which options are afforded to you.

She knew what that experience was going to be, and she could have chosen not to go instead of embarrassing herself like this. It has nothing to do with her beliefs either. I'm an atheist as well, but I know the value of respect and compromise. Not everything has to be a fight. suzyr82 The problem is that she doesn't listen. All she does is voice her opinions and no one else's matters. How would she feel if someone came into her home and started telling her mother how everything she did was either wrong or boring. How rude. I mean I thought the English were taught manners, yet I see she has none. Then it seems like she likes the sound of her own voice too much. Maybe, someone should have sat her down before she left England and explained that she was going to be a guest in someone's house, not a commentator! Hannah isn't much better.

What an excellent TV program. It's refreshing to see a show that doesn't need to use sensationalism, overly loud background music, and false, manufactured drama. It is a shame that communities do not learn from the Amish. There is absolutely no reason that rural communities could combine the advantages of modern technology with the community can do spirit of the Amish. People are not so big on sharing their knowledge freely and helping their neighbor in the U.S., it's all about how can I get to the top... the endless rat race. I've watched a lot of homesteading / survivalism / off-grid content here on KZitem. Interestingly, whenever you ask a question about how someone did their wiring, built something etc. you get the response "none of your business"... um okay, then why are you on youtube / social media if you aren't interested in showing how it's done and interacting with those hoping to do something similar? These people, with few exceptions, are a bunch of self-aggrandizing jerks. Also, there's a little something called zoning laws in the U.S. that make it extremely difficult to build a simple structure for the purpose of year-round habitation. Even in rural areas where you didn't think there would be much code enforcement. But the building codes make it well nigh impossible - even in places like West Virginia. Your best bet is to buy a little cabin, cottage, whatever that has already been "grandfathered" in.

About the issue of education, if you know any people who were home schooled well they get a better education in 14 years than most do through high school and some college. So you can't really compare it to a public school education. And the practical, hands on stuff their kids are getting, I mean it's good stuff. I don't like the dogma of any religious doctrine but in general they seem like kind people who care about each other, the earth, the land...what's not to like about that?

I think public school should be abolished and replaced with a voucher system. Total district funding divided by the number of school age children in the district would equal the voucher amount per child. For instance, school funding in Wyoming averages $17,000 per pupil. A family with three children would get three vouchers, or a total of $51,000 (per year). The family could spend that money at the private school of their choice. Free enterprise would provide private schools which would compete with each other to be the best. A family could shop around and save money. The savings by law would have to go into an education savings mutual fund investment account, which could be used by the children to go to college or trade school. If a private school was so efficient it could cut two years off the normal K-12 time frame, the family would get to keep those years vouchers for those years and use them toward higher education also. The greatest thing would be if moms who want to stay home could get paid for homeschooling via vouchers. Sure there would be abuse. Some parents are crappy parents and would take advantage and not teach their kids. No doubt about it. But that abuse goes on as it is, with the public schools doing the abuse. No parent should have to send their kid to a school they don't want to. No parent should have to send their kid to a school where they teach communism, evolution without also teaching creation, or that inculcates children into homosexuality and political correctness, unless they want to. That would be the beauty of it. People who want to send their kids to a secular school could, or a Christian school, or a Catholic school, or a Jewish school, or an Islamic school, or a devil worshipping school, whatever. If we are going to have publicly funded education, the MOST efficient system would be one with vouchers to private schools of the parents choice. Not the current state monopoly system, in many places also rife with labor unions intent on keeping control and funding.

My heart just sortof melted for Hannah at 35:11. I don't think anyone was expecting any one of these teenagers to leave their world and join an Amish order. I think the goal here for them and anyone watching, is to see a more humble way of life and feel more inclined to put your heart and soul into all you do. Also, to value your family and not take everything for granted. Every single thing that one person did in this community directly affected the other. There was no, "you just do you and I'll do me" attitude.

Those are really nice group of teenagers that they had for that experience. I'm glad that they were all respectful and accepting of the different lifestyle so that the Amish didn't have to deal with being offended or criticize or disrespected like you see so much in the shows where they swap teenagers lives and cultures. And I'm really impressed with the barn raising. It looks like a lot of hard work and it looks like it could be very dangerous if something happened unexpectedly or if the whole group wasn't working together in sync. Really incredible I would love to experience that life for sure at some point. I think I'd be better suited for that kind of lifestyle then I am in my United states, Los Angeles City fast-paced Life that I've been born and raised in. I bet their houses smell amazing all day with all that home-cooked meals that they're preparing. An amazing life.

I don't understand why these girls are so against "women's work". These amish women are cooking dinner as the way to show their gratitude towards 40+ men who showed up and sweated to build the barn. And then I was thinking, what would be the "feminism" or "modern" way in this situation. Work 10 hours a day both you and your husband, hating your boss, so that you can save up and pay the builders to build something in your house..? perhaps the tall fence that would separate you from your neighbours. And then you order take out from a cheap pizza place, sit in front of TV and don't say a word to your loved ones cause you are exhausted. I think their way is much more genuine, caring and healthy. If you look at any other culture with long history, it is very similar: Italians, Chinese, Russians, Arabs. It is all about community and women are happy to cook while men do the heavy lifting.

If the world were run by women and the men eradicated, imagine how long it would take to get labour-intensive projects done? It is a blessing to have men and women to complement one another as God intended. As a woman who does know how to build, it is really nice to have men to bear the brunt of a workload. I would gladly cook food, dessert and cold beverages and hot coffee. What a walk in the park that would be.

33:30 Look how Amish Leah Miller preaches the word to the English girl and shows her the light and the word with complete humility. I commend Leah, I believe she really understands the scripture through and through. Most Street preachers, KZitem evangelists, etc do it the opposite way. Shouting, being confrontational with signs, condemning people to hell = They are preaching the word for Selfish purposes (it could be hate, pride, envy, fame-seeking, etc) When we preach the word and are trying to help lead a non-believer to Christ, they should hardly even know it! I believe we are not to try to convert anyone on the spot but only to plant the seed in their hearts and minds, and God will do the rest!
