Surprised you didn't get much turbulent air off the screen as it doesn't look much different from the previous R1200RS. I ended up fitting a MRA Vario screen, that made a big difference. A rear (Puig) hugger also helps with rear crud fling. Should be standard on a sports tourer tbh. I always worried about BMW painted front engine case being directly in the firing line from stones and debris so fitted the excellent MachineArt Avant Guard (looks factory). The Akra sounds great. Just some ownership tips if you get one in you future.

I know it's difficult, but is there any way in your reviews you could undertake a speedo accuracy test against a satnav? I think people would be quite surprised by the exaggeration of motorbike speedometers, which of course produces better mpg and services before they're needed.

I would keep this bike in my bedroom, to wake every morning and savor its quality. If only the wife shared my appreciation of the engineering excellence. I used to own the 1200RS and have recently taken the 1250 for a test ride. There are a few things it still needs...Rear hugger .. change the position of the satnav as it's going to get blocked if you have a tank bag fitted. And bar risers, on long distances I used to get shoulder ache. Apart from those things it's an excellent bike.

I have the R1200GS, and a Triumph Street Triple 765RS (the wife’s machine 😉) nearly bought a S1000R, but decided it would be better to wait till after we close on our house, don’t want to upset the Mortgage company... LOL It would be nice to get one of each at least for a weekend test ride to decide which would make a nice addition to the 2 wheeled fleet.. Ha Ha ha, think I will have the BMW and Triumph Logo’s painted on the garage floor in the new house, (how is the garage expansion coming along?)

I’ve had my 2016 1200-RS for the last 2 years & covered 14,500 miles, it’s never missed a beat - great all-rounder!! It is quite cramped though, easily fixed by getting the higher sports seat. Then you’ll need the bar risers to take the extra weight off your wrists... Also that standard fitted screen is totally useless on long trips/tours, I have two aftermarket screens to chose from of different heights, a tinted (more sporty looking) Puig - & a clear high/wide Givi screen. I have fitted a LeoVince exhaust to mine, but find it just too noisy for touring on, thankfully it’s a very easy/quick swap back to the standard exhaust, & visa versa! I’m toying with changing it (eventually) for the 1250rs, then swapping all my extras on to that... I won’t take mine to any BMW main dealer for servicing, with those stupidly high prices! I’ve found myself a “back street” BMW specialist who only charges £40 per hour (as opposed to £90 per hour) labour, much better mechanic too imo. 👍🏻

Mr. Flyer-A fine review of this beautifully blue painted bike! I compare it to my '81 R100RS and find some changes: mine has no electronic devices of any kind (no TV screen, ABS, electrical suspension, fuel injection) and fewer horses. But it does have the best fairing ever, much more lightness, an oil dipstick, a complete toolkit, and two (2) exhaust pipes as is proper for twin cylinder machines. In 38 years BMW has improved some things but left other good features behind, and it would be fun to see you review one of the older airhead BMW motorcycles.

Ha! Those '81s have the cool Mad Max fairings. Lovely. I have a '94 and I also just don't like the look of the new RS, it's just too sporty. A sports touring bike should look more of a touring bike rather than a large crutch rocket and I heard that same comment in other reviews as well. I am also holding onto mine and hoping they'll have a better look for the next gen, or just might end up getting an RT - even though I don't want a full touring bike. Thanks for the in-depth review Mr. Flyer!

Don't like the sound, so you would buy an aftermarket pipe that typically would make that sound louder...? I have an older R1150-RS, and I envy the refined technology with electronics management, and extra power of course. I do my own maintenance so I'd be concerned the new OHC would be a bit harder to work on. Also the styling has lots of bits and pieces which don't look as integrated as a unit as with some of the older models. Nice how the windscreen is adjustable but a slightly larger design that is more integrated with the shape of the fairing, again like the older models, would be more appealing, IMHO. I think you could up your reviews in terms of cost of ownership and add to your monthly calculation depreciation cost when you buy new. It would include the information about the price itself and regarding how much the bikes of different producers loose value over time. It is easy to find depreciation curve for specific bikes in the net and it would add a lot of value to the viewers because they could see the real cost that has to be incurred in order to own and ride such a bike. Thanks TMF for a nice review. I'm looking to buy a 21-22 R 1250 RS Exclusive used and found your review quite useful. The quiet exhaust issue your raise is a plus for me. Some residual concerns not addressed are the rear mudguard, which appears to promotes a tail tidy but hardly practical. Also, not sure how much proetecion is offered to the rest of the components. Likewise, the front mudguard may be too short in arc to provide full engine protection in this type of design. None of these issues were discussed in your review, but important for daily and touring riders alike. You also don't discuss slow full lock cornering such as low radius u-turns under engine power with feet on the pegs. A 240+kg bike can be a challenge under these circumstances.

I always find the BMW business model strange. Market your bikes for high mileage users, and then make the cost of servicing prohibitively high for high mileage users. I love them to ride, but with them costs it pushes me to other brands. Enjoyed the video though

why does that nav unit look like it's being placed there as an after thought. Seems as if the techs at bmw realized after they designed the bike, that they forgot about the placement of the nav unit. I love how the nav unit fits in RT.

Thanks for the easy and informative review - very useful for me while I am considering getting a 2020 R1250RS with ~6k miles. Question for anyone here: does the 2020 model come with Android auto (Apple play)? Apparently the motorcycle does not have the Garmin bracket and I am wondering if my cell phone would suffice. Thanks again!

Great review. Is it better than the GS? In terms of the audio in the garage being on the left.. you can fix that in Audacity (it's free) and just copy the audio to both channels.. it will be mono, but better than being lop-sided.. hope that helps.

Hi, my partner just purchased an 1250rs and is finding the clutch biting point to be right at the end of the clutch lever travel. We have replace the levers with Prazzo levers which has helped but it’s still quite far out. Any other adjustments that can be done to bring the biting point in? Thx

This may be an odd question and I am not quite sure how to phrase it but for lack of a better way… Is it more “dad-bike like” or does it have some youthful character points? For context, I am researching my next bike purchase in a few months and I am split between this and the s1k single r. My wife prefers the s1k as she thinks it’s more youthful based off of looks alone. I tend to agree with that but the missions of both bikes are different. I know the s1kr is the naked version of the double r in essence but but this 1250rs seems like it will do everything I personally like about riding. It’s sporty enough without being over the top, I can tour on it and go extended distances, it looks killer minus the anemic exhaust sound, it seems fairly affordable, for being a Beemer, and generally speaking it’s the total package. Is there anything I’m missing out of that assessment? I’d love to hop on a test ride but here in the states test rides have always been a bit harder to come by and more so now with COVID reasoning and recession talk about. Thanks Flyer!

Very nice theoretically. In practice it doesn't work at all. The tyrepumps at gas stations are almost allways worn out and won't push the valve in enough to fill the tyre. I've owned an 1915 R1200R and now own a 2017 R1200R and have to fill the tyres at work, where a have a better nozzle.

You can buy an enhanced rear mudguard at any BMW UK/AUS dealer. Quick and easy bolt-on OEM replacement for the piece that sits behind the number plate arm. Not so pretty, but as it's much wider it keeps all the mud of the back of your pillion and your top-box. Forget the huggers, they do very little.

I have an ST which is the previous generation but same concept. I removed the clip on bars and raised up the controls, installed a touring seat but left the pegs in stock position. Great Sports touring bike but not a touring bike. Fun to ride, not as powerful as the 1250 but not as heavy either. Great handling bike compared to the RT.

Any suggestion of vibration through the handle bars @ 4K/5K & through the pegs @ around 3/4K? The reviewer also complained about the Brembo brake fade after thrashing it on the autobahns in Germany. These were niggles as he generally liked the bike.

Great video TMF! Question for you, RS vs Superduke GT. I’m in a 2013 GS and looking more for sports touring. What’s your thoughts on those two? Both bikes look awesome and have their pro’s and con’s. I love the sound of the twin and lean towards the KTM for range as well. Can’t believe the RS only holds 18lts!?!? Hopefully due to ride both in the coming weeks if we’re allowed out. Your thoughts?
