All footage shot by Chuck Loeb. Love you forever, Dad.
My dad and I were taking a walk through the woods one afternoon late last fall, when he suggested, with the pure optimism he always radiated, that we just shoot a video for one of my songs ourselves. Right then, no excuses. He was not feeling himself because of the chemo and was easily tired, but his eyes lit up with the thought. We proceeded to imagine shots and execute them with the excitement of children. No makeup, no lights, just father and daughter equipped with some light technology and our beautiful, peaceful reservoir.
Everything, everything, everything, anything, every time was fun with my dad.
We finished it up the next day beneath the first snow of the season, eager to capitalize on the beauty. I've since edited it together and more or less had it done, but continued to pick and prod. Questioning my production choices, my vocal, my hair. Eventually I moved on to other things without putting it out there.
It would be a profound understatement to say he always encouraged me to put my music out there when I was trepidatious, or cool or a perfectionist. He simply believed in me with every fiber of his being.
So all I can do, now that I can't talk to him and hear his voice back, or sing a song to his perfect guitar, is savor the words and the memories and the anthology of pure magic in the form of music he left in his wake. Although I don't think I will ever feel whole again as long as I live, I can feel him by following his example and doing what he always did. He gave his good heart to the world, especially to his wife and his girls. Earnestly and completely.
So here it is, out there. just like he always told me to.
I love you forever Dad.
