Ljubljana Castle or Ljubljanski Grad is a medieval fortress standing on a hill with a beautiful view of the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. The date of foundation is considered to be the 12th century. In the 15th century, the fortress was rebuilt, a watchtower was added and the fortress began to carry on its defensive function until the 18th century. In the 19th and 20th century, the purpose of the castle changes and it becomes a city prison.
In 1905, the castle was taken over by the city, where the original plan was to build a museum. But at that time, due to the tension in social relations between the authorities and the townspeople, it was decided to give the castle to the needs of the unprotected strata of the population and the castle became a shelter for homeless people until the mid-1960s. After 1960, the fortress underwent a global reconstruction lasting almost 30 years.
Today, the fortress houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Ljubljana and Slovenia.
The castle can be reached by a funicular railway, which has been in operation since 2006. The journey time is 60 seconds. The height difference is approximately 70 metres.
