On the stunning Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy at restaurant Lo Scoglio, we ask you to join us for lunch sitting above the waves caressing the beach with a restful cadence of background sound. Lo Scoglio stands apart on the Sorrento dining scene as a truly authentic "Farm to Table" restaurant owned and run by De Simone family through three generations and a forth growing like weeds - a rarity in this day and age.
In the small fishing village and now holiday town of Marina del Cantone half an hour by car of winding steep hillside roads from Sorrento with unforgettable views and the Limoncello lemon groves clinging to the rough hillside, it is the worth any detour to experience the freshest fish and vegetables available anywhere. Literally! Set on a rocky beach extending out into over the water, you can watch the clientele arrive by boat and the Lo Scaglio launch picking them up to dine. The variety of vegetables is impressive. This utterly charming family run kitchen boasts not one but three farms under the experienced hand of Pappa Peppino who endures the kitchens get daily fresh from the soil produce. Baskets of zucchini, artichokes, spinach, tomatoes, favas, egg plant - you name it - arrive early and the produce chef is already hard at work by 8.00 AM in anticipation of the lunch crowd. The local fishermen, who are an extended family, then provide the catch of the day from the waters between Marina del Cantone and the island of Capri just across the water.
LInda started with the gigantic display of vegetables that included everything brought in on that day. Bigger than anyone could eat in one sitting. I had the local pasta favorite spaghetti and zucchini dish, "Spaghetti alla Nerano" rendered to perfection at Lo Scaglio. Others may do a good job but if you want the best, Lo Scaglio is the place to go. We both had a fish that is found only in the deep waters between Marina del Cantone and the Island of Capri. It was pointed out to us that you can tell is is deep water since their eyes are huge the better to see with in the dark waters down deep. Linda finished with that mouth watering and highly refreshing "Limoncello Sorbet" while I had an intense concoction of lemon "Delizia al Limone" (a lemon glaze covered lemon cakes filled with lemon cream from Sorrento) and a crispy dried slice of lemon just in case you have not yet overloaded on lemon. In the Sorrento area, you simply cannot not eat the local lemon dishes made from the local variety of rather huge lemons.
Then it has to be finished off with what the French call a digestive - espresso served (as are all the dishes) in hand decorated local pottery.
This restaurant is not just a favorite with locals and tourists in the know, many famous people from all over the world have sought out this place from well known chef Wolfgang Puck to Hollywood glitterazi like Sting and Jennifer Lopez not to mention featuring on the recent show from Tucci on CNN.
(Did I mention they also have a 14 room, simple but charming hotel right on the shore as well for those who don't want to have to drive or helm a boat after eating and imbibing to perfection?)
