I had put in many years off and on from this, The old A models, the B models, the last before retiring was the 992 C model. It was a hoss-cat. This 992 in the video had great breakout force with good load time on as large as a 777 CAT truck. I worked this model as hard as it would dig in shot rock and it would work hard when called upon to produce. Thanks.

I ran several A models and a B model in the 70s with this type roll protection cab and the square type cab only on the A. The back door was never a safety concern until one day I blew a O-ring and it continued to spray oil on the Trubos and exhaust. There was no way to exit the door for a short time and my thought was I’m going to have to exit these side windows or if it gets worst knock the windshield out. Years later in a safety meeting from MSHA I read of a fatality from a fire on a old 92. As I did the meeting I thought of the experience I had as a young man. Over all the 92’s were very reliable. We used the A and B models mostly for load and carry in shot rock , digging keys for draglines and pulling pad or partings mining for coal. It wasn’t until the C’s were built before we ever loaded trucks .

I see what you are talking about. The rear portion is the part which is the ROP protection, whereas the front part is just the cab protection from wind and dust. Also, some of those had a sliding door which opened in the back part of the cab. Some ha a swinging door as opposed to the sliding door.

My grandfather ran one of these back in the 70's and he said the door on the rear was supposed to be a safety thing. Because of the height of the operators station, there was worry that you'd be thrown or bounced out of the cab over bumpy terrain. I'm guessing the early ones didn't have seat belts.
