I Got the lockers for $50, They're extremely heavy duty on the front... double folded 14 gauge steel for the most part.
The steel for shelving, brackets, sides cost about $200 by the time i was done...Used about 25 feet of 3/4" square tubing and 6 feet of 1" angle iron in addition to 6ftx2ft worth of sheeting for the sides and about a half a ton of 1/8" and 3/16" steel plates for shelving. Overkill... :)
The paint cost about $50 I like to use rust inhibiting primer and top end tremclad pro enamels. hardy as hell and you get way more in a can than the crappy stuff.
I'll probably buy a sheet of heavy galvanized steel for the back too just for added weight and security.
The carpets are heavy floor mats from costco, about $40 for all of it with some left. I used 3 mats at $12 each.
2 entire caulking tubes of PL Premium Urethane adhesive, 1 entire caulking tube of PL9000 general purpose construction adhesive, and a couple hand tubes of "No more Nails" all purpose construction adhesive. I use way too much glue, but its not going ANYWHERE :) Probably $40 worth of glue but most of it i had laying around anyways.
Lots of nice, vented storage for cleaning supplies, tools, ammo, and firearms.
The empty cabinet now weighs about 150 Pounds and is extremely awkward due to its size, so not much risk of carrying the whole thing out especially after adding another 150 pounds of firearms, ammo, tools, etc.
After I Add the steel on the back I'll probably bolt it directly to wall studs...
Pretty rad use of old lockers hey? My first time using the welder...Got pretty good at filling in/grinding flat holes that I blew in the thin metal :)
It's not the same as a gun safe, but most gun safes end up just carried out by a couple guys intact and cracked open later... this at least is a lot harder to move, and will be stored in an insured, secured, alarmed and monitored house, in a locked room..with locks on each cabinet, potentially bolted to a wall. Better security by FAR than a regular 200 pound, easily carried 6 or 8 gun safe that most people just toss in a closet.
I don't have many guns, only two at present. But I figured why not prepare for the future and learn how to weld :)
Used up a bunch of my assorted spraypaints too so this counts as a spring cleaning project!
