Nothing like modern jetliners. My mom came to this country in a "Connie". From Athens, Greece to NYC, it made seven stops and took some 36 hours. When my mom travels now to Greece, she says, thank God for modern jets. I fly home is just 8 1/2 hours none stop.

My last flight on a TWA to DC was at 26,000' and smooth as butter. Those Constellations were perfect and so was the service from airline and it's crew. Awesome video.

The 749 was my favorite, I started out in the 049 they have one at Pima Air Museum in AZ. The 749 had more 'creature comforts' for its passengers longer range and still kept it 'cozy' with around 40 passenger average depending on first class or tourist seating. I loved looking out of those round windows, back then we flew around 20k feet and you could still see a lot, great fun.

The SWEET sound of radial engines starting up is the sound of a true and sincere "Romance Of The Skies"!! It is such a PASSIONATE and POWERFUL sound that you can't help but thoroughly enjoy every note of it from idling to full throttle!!

I know what you mean, fortunately I came from an airline family TWA, my Dad worked with Jack Frye in St. Louis as a young salesman and quickly moved into management so when I was born I had unlimited free transportation and lost count of how many Connie flights I was on. Started out in the 049 then 749, my favorite. On a night flight over the atlantic I would try to get a window seat just before the wing so I could see those blueish flames shooting out of the Wright 18 cylinder engines, heaven.

I was told by one of the flight engineers years ago that the blue flame meant a perfect mixture for the engines. My Dad had several pilot friends from the airline that would visit him when we lived in Cairo Egypt and also London Eng. And I remember some of the conversations. Most of those guys I flew with were WW11 bomber pilots and used to flying while being shot at, the 'civilian flying' to them was a 'piece of cake'. Had a few rough landings in Gander Newfoundland but never anything bad.

How this sound of a Connie was all about Kansas City Municipal Airport (MKC) in the 1950's, mostly TWA's. Pure romance that jet roar can't match.

My first flight was on a connie, from Lawton, OK (Ft Sill) to Philadelphia, PA (Ft Dix, NJ) in Sep '63. Not being aware at the time that it was normal, I was a bit unnerved when I noticed how far up and down the wingtips were moving.

I was lucky enough to fly on KLM 707's in the late 60's & that was good enough. But to get to fly on a 'Connie', especially a KLM 'Connie' when it was in service, that had to the "Golden era" of aviation!

One of my most favorite aircraft! I love the sound of radial engines. I was definitely born in the wrong era - well, not entirely. Jet powered multi-engined aircraft were not in wide supply when I was born. This is such a sexy airplane. Just has the prettiest lines of any aircraft. Thanks for posting this. It's great.

When I was 18 I was invited to fly aboard this very aircraft (N749NL) in Marana, AZ (KAVQ) in September of 2002 as it was being prepared for the transatlantic flight to the Netherlands. I just found the video I made of the experience and will be converting the VHS to digital for use on youtube soon. If it were not for the video I shot, I would not have known what became of this aircraft. Luckily I got a pretty good shot of the tail number. My biggest memory of that day was the sound of those huge radials when they fired up. The emergency exits had been removed and the sound was amazing. I had no idea they sounded the way they did. They had a lope that was unforgettable. They even let me lay in some kind of storage area under the floor just behind the cockpit as they approached Tucson. The storage area was open to the front landing gear where the wheels were stowed about 24 inches in front of me. During the low-pass, the gear was lowered and I had a perspective of Tucson not seen by many. And I got it on video.

That's awesome, both sight and sound! A new connie is airborne once more, and the last time I've seen one was at the last El Toro Airshow in 1997 when I was 7. This one is one of the earlier variants it seems, due to the lack of a nose radar, but then again, I could be wrong.. Nice post!

Eastern Airlines was still using Constellations for commuter/shuttle flights in the late '60s & early '70s, In 1968, An Eastern Constellation collided with an American Airlines 707-120 over New York's JFK Airport, The 707 was only cosmetically damaged, The "Connie" however was totaled.
