I have experimented with fitting a cross over the top of the blast, which was opened up more to allow for reduced back pressure and also to enhance steaming. It worked, in fact the engine goes faster as a result, indicating that the blast was previously throttled. Good stuff Tom. This is brilliant.

That’s good to know. I’ve still got experimenting to do with this, it steamed too well yesterday, so maybe I’ll open up the nozzles a bit and see what happens. The worry is opening them too much and having to start again… 😆

@@TomsWorkshop42 the other trick is to make them removable, and thread the blower/blast block for want of a better word.

@@jimmynswgr I almost did that, but they were a bit close together to do that comfortably, maybe I should have spaced them apart a touch more.

@@TomsWorkshop42 that’s fair enough, a friend has experimented with lempor exhausts as well. He made a range of different sizes, and made them easily exchanged so that he could test them and change them during the test run to have immediate comparisons. Does that engine have a rosebud grate? What air percentage is it?

@@jimmynswgr it isn’t too bad to change the nozzle while hot, but is a drawn out process making it, especially having the combined blower ring. Maybe I should make that as a separate part which is clamped in place by the nozzle 🤔 Yes, it has a rosebud grate, approximately 16% air, although possibly slightly higher. I haven’t put together my video from yesterday, was pretty busy but did get a bit of video later on. Ran for about 3 1/2 hours, but clinker played havoc at the end. Was pulling the fire really well, will open up the nozzles before the next run. Just looking up the possibility of a basic kylchap arrangement too.

Watching this space, Im really fascinated by what you're doing with the experimental lempor. Based on the amount of success you have, Id love to see a Kordina implemented.

Another thought tap each nossel that way it gives the blast more twist.

Hi tom, out of interest what size holes did you use in the nozzles and what is the rough distance between the top of the nozzles to the bottom of the petticoate flair?
@TomsWorkshop42

These worked out to be 1/8, although after running it I’m going to open them up slightly to tweak it. I just aimed to be roughly at the bottom of the petticoat flair.

So, are you planning to add the second (Kylälä spreader) and third stages (chapelon) as well? Because that should also increase performance/efficiency.
@TomsWorkshop42

It’s a possibility, but need to investigate further and see if I can out how to make/fit one in the space I have available.

@@TomsWorkshop42 I think space might be the biggest problem. But it would be very interesting to see if it would work. I've been thinking about this for a while and I'd probably machine the separate stages, and solder them together to the petticoat. Although I do have a tendency to over-engineer things. 😅

I have just reminded myself of a terrible blunder that you have regrettably made with your garden railway. It concerns those radiators that you cut up & used as imitation sheet piling. May I please suggest that you get some JB weld putty & seal the ends of this piling such that your kids cannot draw blood from the ends of said piling. I pulled the corner of a wall over & finished up with a suspicion that the nurses were determined to get me every time went into the out-patient department of Swansea hospital. Because they kept giving me Anti-tetanus injections!! A terrible infliction to grow up with & one I feel sure that you do not wish to pass on to your children!!

Yes, I haven’t quite decided how yet, but I do intend to cap the top of them, I was thinking maybe some angle iron tack welded on top to make a nice finish, but the jb weld may be an easier option, I’ll have more of a think, thank you.
