I think that railbus conversion is excellent! An interesting video encouraging those who have to start somewhere and with something. Not possible like you say to dive straight into the 'specialist stuff' and also handy to begin learning how to run trains properly before any expensive smashes occur due to inexperience. 10/10 for this video thinks me!

One other suggestion would be to buy job lots as the cost of postage is the same whether it's one loco or several up to about 2kg so spreading the cost over several items. I bought a loco and five wagons and coaches for £7 so the 25 dollar postage would be spread over six items not one?

Hi. Ebay and similar sites mainly. The answer is to look for items most people don't want and also job lots and bulk items where again most people don't want them. The Mehano wagons are freelance items but paint up really well. one loco cost .99p on eBay and I could collect so no postage. In the UK most people want British outline steam locos, so european and especially freelance diesel locos are cheap. Building materials are also bought second hand or cheap on eBay from China. Hope this helps? Mike

I was given a Mehano train set many years ago which used an Alco RS series loco. Unfortunately the motor stoped working but I have a number of Hornby and Triang locos and rolling stock that I can use instead.

i went a similar way with my n gauge adventure. only a little bit crazier i bought one easy to disasemble tanker wagon and made a resin copy of it, so now i have an infinite amount of petrol tankers which i paint in my local railroad colors. Each aditional wagon cost about 1 pound with wheels , decals and paint. And i couldn't find that many tankers of that type even if i would want to pay fortune for them the bigges disadventage of doing that is only 1 in every 2 resin casting of a fairly detail undercarrige is worth using. and most of them miss some of the details like one or two break shooes, a lader step or a smaller detail, but ou would have to look really close to notice it so resin copy of a fairly low detail wagons is a way to go for a lot of the same type of wagon cheap

Hi, I have tried resin casting with war games vehicles, like you say only about 69% work but I ended up with lots of cheap bits of kit. I made my own masters which helped.

They may be US locos painted to look European but there are very similar ones also in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania(seen the real things), so they're ideal for an Eastern Europe setting. Lima also do some N scale models which look better repainted, I know from previous experience of them.

During WW2 the US sent Russia many diesel loco's ( as well as a lot of other stuff) The locos were copied by Russia after the war. This is why they were found all over the Soviet Block Countries After the war The ALCO ( American Locomotive CO.units were just about "bomb proof". Russia also copied the thousands of Studebaker 6x6 trucks that we sent them. They were also very reliable. It's said that a popular Russian toast during the war was to honor Stalin, Eisenhower and Studebaker!!

Great initiative. At least it is a great and affordable opportunity to find out if kids would like this fascinating hobby or not. Even a new and relatively cheap starter set sets you back quite some money and it would be a shame if it lands somewhere in the cupboard after a few times playing with it. And stay there forever. Model railroading stimulates a kids' thinking, skills how to tackle a problem and the rewards a kid experiences if he (or she) solved a problem will be tremendous. Better than any computer game!

You certainly got some really great deals. So you call your rolling stock ¨wagons¨. We call them boxcars. You call your passenger cars ¨coaches¨ and we call them passenger cars or coaches. I am into languages and speak German and Spanish. I often practice on listening to someone talk and then try to guess where they are from. Most of the time I am correct. I like how you fixed up your American locos to look British. :-)

Indian Railways purchased several licenses for Alco locomotives, in particular the high-horsepower six-axle units, and they built a lot of them - I think over 2700 just in the "WD" or Western District section of the network, for example. They also licensed designs from EMD, as well as importing some for test purposes. Some were GP-style units, and some were allocated specifically to passenger service, with IR-designed cabs. IR uses the broadest mainline gauge of any of the world's major railways - 5ft 6inch - but they also have used 1 metre (39 inch) gauge, 2 ft 6in. gauge., and 2 ft. "narrow gauge" lines over 4% - 5% of their total network. Almost all of the narrow gauge lines have been converted to the 5 ft. 6 in. "Broad" gauge. A few of the smallest narrow gauge lines in the north are still operating, in many cases as historic/tourist attractions. Indian Railways have also undertaken a massive electrification scheme, so most of the famous "Smoking Alcos" have been retired from regular service.

On my industrial layout I've used commercial ballast on the 'main line' but for the yards where the ballast would be filthy I've mixed ash (put through an old metal tea strainer so I get the more lumpy bits) mixed with the guts of a water filter. I know it's round bits in the filter but a layer of paint on top you'd never know. Recycling? Yeah, well; sort of!

There are some cheap locos in eBay. But the shipping cost is very high. I’m from Sri Lanka. Paying shipping cost of $ 25 for an item of $ 3 is not economical. Could you please let me know a solution for this?

That's a problem. Is there an Indian or perhaps Australian Ebay that might be cheaper? I've checked postage rates from the UK and as you say they are at least 25 Dollars. I have some Sri Lankan friends, next time I see them I will ask if they know a cheaper way? Perhaps try one of the many forum model railway sites and see if anyone has a solution? Mike

Hi. Sorry but I know very little about N guage except that the locos are even more expensive than OO or HO, and shipping would only be a little cheaper. I dont think that 35 dollars would cover the cost and the shipping, whoever sends it the postage is still 25 dollars plus. Sadly I do not send items outside of Europe as its proved too un reliable in the past. I have found details if some model shops in India and would be happy to send details of them if that is helpful.

I tried through every possible channel without success. Most of the cheap locomotives are not shipped to Sri Lanka. So, please let me know whether it is possible for you to purchase & send me. I will pay you the total amount (including shipping cost) before your dispatch the package. I prefer N scale (Diesel) due to limited space & low shipping cost. @@BudgetModelRailways I totally agree with your idea of Budget Railways , things have got right out of hand £25 for a waggon ! £165 for a (not so good ) loco . I spent all weekend looking for 2 resonably priced hopper waggons and found 2 hornby for £19 . I can remember airfix , plastic bag , instructions stapled to it for 2 bob. Its got out of hand, the Hornby 4 wheel coach is a 40 year old model made from three bits of plastic and two sets of wheels, yet its £18 retail , I can buy a detailed bogie wagon direct from China Inc shipping for £14. Hornby want £25 for a similar item. Hornby can buy in bulk so the profit margin must be huge.
