Lofree Edge Beta Tester Unboxing & Sound Test
Beta Tester Summary
Pros:
• Probably the thinnest & lightest premium mechanical keyboard in the world?
• 75%/84 keys is my favourite layout (subjective preference I know)
• Super smooth typing experience.
• Pleasantly audible but quiet enough to be used at work.
• Very stable Bluetooth connection to both PC & Mac.
• Great bonus Carbon Fibre stand.
Cons:
• Keycap legends can be difficult to read in low light for us non touch typists.
• No ISO Support.
Quick background on me:
I am a UK based hardened (mature?) IT Professional that has worked in the sector since CRTs and Lotus Notes. So long enough to have seen a lot of changes in the industry and long enough to know that I will only entertain decent kit. I am no coder but spend hours at the screen in meetings, writing papers and on calls (plus editing and gaming). I am a bit of a keyboard/general tech enthusiast and the Edge has brought my count of mechanical keyboards to 7. I was lucky enough to be selected as one of only 2 worldwide beta testers by the team at Lofree.
Unboxing:
The whole unboxing experience is as smooth as the keyboard itself. The packaging is wonderfully neat and laid out nicely inside. A separate accessories box with a very nice angled USB-C cable and a few accent keys to give the board a little more character. The Keyboard itself is protected by an inner sleeve and when removed from the box it reveals the stand parts beneath it. The Edge is fully built straight out of the box so it is ready to go (apart from the little stand which is a great extra that you need to build yourself!)
Set-up:
The basic set up is simple, you either use the attached cable or switch to Bluetooth mode for wireless connectivity. I paired it with my gaming/editing PC, my work MacBook Pro (M2) and my iPhone. The keyboard can be switched between wireless devices quickly and I found the speed to re-establish a connection each time I switched devices to be very swift. The north facing white backlights are slightly adjustable but with just brightness, static and breathing modes. There is a proprietary Lofree Configurator app coming soon for adjusting key maps.
Usage:
Without a doubt, the stand out feature of this device for me is its portability. As a hybrid IT professional I am often moving between home and one of the 3 main offices I use. The Edge has immediately become my main work Keyboard. The Kailh POM switches and PBT keycaps provide a pleasant but not overly loud sound profile, perfect for office environments. The sound is a subtle marbly-light-poppy-thock (is that a thing?) and the typing experience is buttery smooth. The Edge is gasket mounted but the physical depth of the board is so minimal that there isn't much movement but this didn’t detract from the typing experience. My only complaint from the whole experience was that I found the grey legends on black keys difficult to read in anything but well-lit situations. I am not a touch typist (as you will see in the video 😂), alphas are not a problem for me but I did find myself hunting for a modifier occasionally.
Conclusion:
I have used the Keyboard for a couple of weeks now and it is a fantastically premium, super light keyboard that will certainly suit many on the go professionals, people wanting to transition from an Apple or laptop style keyboard or simply those that prefer a low profile typing experience. The wired connection is plenty fast enough for gaming and Bluetooth is great for versatile portability. The only real downside is the key legends, this could have been avoided with shine through keycaps or using a higher contrast. I know the final version will have the option for different 3 extra keycaps sets and remember this is just a low-profile MX switch underneath. The attention to detail on the casing is fantastic, from the materials to the embossed Lofree logo on the side profile and the clever sub-printed logo underneath the mesh on the back.
Overall a classy product that I am looking forward to using for a long time.
