*TIP* I found I have to do Flex Timing before I do Flex pitch, but Logic wasn't analyzing all the notes when I selected Flex Pitch. I found that when I "re-analyzed" the track for logic to read ALL the notes, I was losing my Flex Timing edits! If this is happening to you, here's a tip I discovered (I'm sharing on here because I'm too lazy to find the right thread in Apple Community and to make a video, but I want to help another lost soul). Flex Timing edits must be done first and then flex pitch can be edited. If Flex Timing is not commiting, make sure Flex Timing is turned on on the Original track. Copy the Original track, making sure Flex Timing is turned on on Copy track, and then bounce Copy track in place. This will commit Flex Timing edits on the bounced track so that you can open and re-analyze Flex Pitch edits on the bounced track without losing Flex Timing edits. If the bounced track isn't showing up after bouncing, just save, close, and re-open logic and bounce again.

I'm really enjoying your videos and they are fast tracking my learning how to use Logic. Thank you for doing these! I have one question about this one, if I may. When you came back after making all your final pitch corrections and other edits off screen, I noticed Flex was turned off. Are all the edits preserved even after turning Flex off? I'm assuming so, since you didn't mention any additional steps to save them. Thanks again.

Great video! One question, hope Josh or the logic pro expert can answer it... Is the flex pitch analysis only on track level but not regions? I have done a lot of work on the track, but when replacing a section with another region, and trying to merge them, my work on the flex pitch all disappear. I'm not sure what is the right way to "print" the flex pitch on my region. RIght now I'm always bouncing my tuned vocal to a new track...

I could use some help, these videos are great but I can never get one thing to work, and that is flex pitch and/or flex time for vocals or acoustic instruments recorded with a microphone. I do everything following the steps you take with turning on flex for the project and then the tracks, but while the markers appear when I do it on, say, a guitar track recorded by line, nothing happens when I do it on a microphone audio track. Any idea of why this might be?

Most of them, but in a different order. Before I split up 77 videos into 3 main parts -- audio recording and editing, MIDI and synthesis, then mixing and mastering. In the 101, 201, 301 and 401 series, we'll be doing them on a project-by-project basis. So 101 is mostly basics. 201 is more advanced production, MIDI and synthesis. 301 is advance multi-track recording and mixing, and 401, I'm not exactly sure yet.

Hey Josh, do you think that recording at a higher sample rate helps to use flex pitch more freely? I mean, your tracked vocal will be in a higher resolution, right?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
6 жыл бұрын
That would be a great topic to test! I'll have to make a separate video for that. I'm tracking at 48kHz. But when I work in Melodyne I never have any problems with artifacts even at 48k or 44.1k. I think it's just the limitation of flex pitch, but definitely something to test out in a future video. Part of the reason for me working at 48k is that my mac pro can't always handle simultaneously capturing 1080p60 footage of my screen, while simultaneously grabbing audio, and also running the Logic session at the same time. At a higher sample rate, it would lock up on me.

Yeah, I've thought about vocal lessons, but I don't have any extra time for it. Part of it is also that I severely damaged/burned my throat when I was like 19. I used to sing a lot better, and I didn't have constriction issues. But I was cleaning out a french fryer at my very first job at Wendy's, and I accidentally sprayed oven cleaner into the empty fryer, but forgot to turn the heaters off. The fumes rose up and breathed it all in, and since then my voice in generally has never sounded the same. I literally couldn't talk for almost a month!

what do you do when the takes are not in sync? is there a way to synchronize takes? dealing with some latency issues with my apollo duo smh.
@MusicTechHelpGuy
6 жыл бұрын
You can use flex time to adjust the timing of notes, but I usually do timing fixes before tuning. If it' just a latency issues where the recording is getting delayed, try to determine roughly what the delay is and nudge all of your takes over. You can also take something like a quick pop in Logic, and feed the interface back into itself and re-record the pop on another track. Then you can see exactly how much the delay is. If you're trying to sync takes, you can use flex time, but I usually use a plug-in called vocalign, to auto-align stacked vocal takes.

Probably a stupid question, but when flex pitching, how do I know what key the artist has sung in?
@JuicyLeek
6 жыл бұрын
You can figure this out without any software. Just take a keyboard or guitar and find the root chord or root note. Usually it's the first note in the song, or the note that the melody keeps returning to. And then you need to judge whether it's a major or minor key, which requires very basic ear training.
@swim_ad
2 жыл бұрын
@@JuicyLeek Wrong way to do that. A better way is take your instrument and play all the notes that work over the song inside one octave (pro tip: 7 notes per key) if there are key changes, you'll have to do this for each section. Then simply paste those notes into Google and it will tell you what key and mode you are playing in. Simply setting pitch correction software to be Major or Minor doesn't always work. Example our singer wrote a song in Ab Phrygian. Try setting Autotune/melodyne to major or minor in that case and you get wrong notes. So by manually selecting the notes in your software, you're going to get better more professional results tuning vocals this way.

I got this from Sweetwater: While we all want as little latency as possible, the buffer size is dependent on a number of things such as how many plug-ins are loaded on a track, and the computer’s processing power. If the buffer size is too low, you may encounter errors during playback or may hear clicks and pops. If the buffer size is set too high while recording, however, there will be quite a bit of latency which can be frustrating. Here are a few tips when working with the buffer size. Low Buffer - Set the buffer size to a lower amount (during recording) to reduce the amount of latency for more accurate monitoring. The downside to lowering the buffer size is that it puts more pressure on your computer’s processors and forces them to work harder. Use as few plug-ins as possible during the tracking phase so that your computer’s processing bandwidth is uninhibited. If you start to choke your processors with other tasks, you will experience clicks and pops or errors which will make tracking your project a nightmare. It is usually OK to give your singer a little reverb or to use light plug-ins, but you should avoid using processor-intensive plug-ins when the buffer size is lowered. You can usually raise the buffer size up to 256 samples without being able to detect much latency in the signal. High Buffer - In the mixing phase, you will be monitoring playback only, so it is safe to raise the buffer size to a higher setting since you are no longer monitoring live signals. This allows you to use more plug-ins before encountering clicks and pops or errors, depending on your computer’s resources and limitations. You may notice a slight delay when you start playback in your DAW with the buffer turned all the way up, but this is normal and is not a sign that your DAW is choking.
