Oh Josh, this was SOOOO good. I am going through all you "Ultimate Guide to Logic Pro" and didn't see Articulations and Keyswitches any place, and I was devastated as I just got some new orchestral sets and had no idea if I could keyswitch within a track. Then, lo and behold, I searched for a tutorial on KZitem and here this was!! You totally explained it and beautifully as usual. thank you SO much!

Thanks for this video. This is going to save me so much time programming articulations for horns. My workaround previously was to add an 'articulation note' in the piano roll just before the note that I wanted the articulation applied. This was a laborious task so thanks again.

When creating articulation sets, is turning on or off the MIDI icon a necessity? And also, when changing articulations in the piano roll, are you using the mouse pointer, or the pointer in Logic? Thanks

The advantage of using regular keyswitches is their visibility in the Piano Roll. The disadvantage is that keyswitches are affected by transpositional properties, whether project/global, track or region properties. So I'd prefer using standard keyswitches: • if there's a way to set them as non-transposable • if there's a way to make them stand out as a keyswitch. The advantage to Articulation Sets is their transpositional immunity. Their disadvantages are: 1) the arcane, hacked-on user interface (Just try to understand saving via Save As. I'm hoping the implementation is improved in Logic Pro 11.) 2) the tedious setup. (Are Sets available by vendor/product for easy import?) 3) AFAIK, an articulation from an articulation Set is entirely invisible in the Piano Roll Editor. (Perhaps they show in the list editor ... I'll have to experiment to determine if that's true.) 4) some articulations are inherently mutually exclusive, that's clear. But would using and Articulation Set limit us to just one articulation per note? For instance, what if I want legato with strum direction instructions?

I’ve been using articulations for about 2 years - usually making my mods in the piano role. No problem in Logic instruments, and NI Komplete instruments each already have key switches assigned (usually C0 thru B0) but I’ve never had to create a custom articulation set, yet. I knew you could create an articulation set, but I had the crazy idea that you could have new user-defined articulations…. No idea how. For example: say I wanted a generic build in volume articulation. With Logic midi effects, or automation, I could quickly increase velocity values from 25 - 100. But wouldn’t it be cool to save that as a user defined articulation in your own set?

You sound like me, always on an endless quest to solve a problem. I spent a good bit of time getting keyswitch lights and keyzones on my NI keyboard, for anything non-NI - such as Studio Horns, Musio, etc. I must say it was well worth the effort. But right now I can't seem to get and external midi control to manipulate expression or modulation in these articulation lanes. I noticed that the poster only showed volume, pan, and module parameters. Those all work for me, just not exp/mod.

@@preamble466 there’s satisfaction in making a non-Native Instruments keyboard work with Komplete Kontrol, but I’m at a point where I’d like MPE, midi 2.0 AND polyphonic aftertouch. But nobody offers all 3. We’re in that in-between phase, where a lot of new gear will be coming out in 2025.

Very helpful video. Thank you. Got me up and running with Articulation Sets. You could have saved a little bit of time by reading EW HollyWoods Pop Brass's description of what the different key switch notes do in the instrument's window. e.g. A0 CresFst. The names tell you.

If you are using the same 3rd party software program for each instrument in articulation sets, do you have to rename the sets for each instrument?

Does this work with multiple keyswitches simultaneously? For example with a guitar instrument where you would have one keyswitch choosing the articulation, and another at the same time forcing the same note to a specific string.

Do you know if it's possible to connect this map to the expression markings in the score so when you add the articulation on the score it automatically plays that articulation? I'm taking about the symbols in the score editor you add to the score.
@zargflonk

Select the appropriate term in the symbol column (Articulation tab). The symbol will then appear on the score when the key switch is triggered. I don't know if adding the symbol on the score will trigger a key switch - haven't tried that.

You can get symbols on a score (indicating key switch changes) by updating the symbol column on the Articulations tab. I don't recall an indication in the midi editor (not in front of it right now).

It’s sorta hidden but BBCSO does use keyswitches. You assign them yourself using the tiny greyed-out-looking 5-note keyboard icon to the above right of the articulations. Drag to assign in the keyboard layout in the player.

Thank you always for your great👍🏻 tutorials. I was looking for a way to make a shortcut to change articulations before and after inputted them and I found it. It might be obvious but I post it anyway. With step input entry, articulation set, I enter the midi notes with my computer keyboard with A~J, the rhythm with 1~0, and change articulations with a midi keyboard (piano) with C0~F1 with Midi Remote button switch On.
