I had no idea that this level of creativity was available in DMD! Thank you 👍

You're very welcome Peter. Do check back next Wednesday for the following video - it pushes on from where we get to at the end of this episode and if it's creativity in DMD you're after, I think you'll like it!

Brilliant as usual, thanks Jono! And thanks for the reminder that I can swap any instrument in-I have some hi hats I made in Retro and an ES2 kick that will work well in this context. 👍

Absolutely - DMD is so much more flexible than it first appears. Thanks, as always.

Great video, you can also load any virtual instrument into the pads on DMD, like Synplant2, Serum, Battery or anything even Maschine lol, DMD is such a great way of organising your sounds and production work

Excellent description. Thank U, but how do we save the new drum kit to use on other projects?
@jonobuchananmusic

Hi Rodney. When you've built your kit, open the Library by pressing Y. Then click once on the Blue DMD Instrument you've made. In the Library area, you'll find a Save button in the bottom right-hand corner, which lets you Save your DMD Kit as a Patch. It'll be saved into a new User Patches folder, which you can then access in any other Logic project. Hope that helps!

Hi Jono, just a question, every time I try to copy a note in the piano roll and dragging it to a different note by holding down Option + click and drag it fails.. I get a green + symbol and then the note gets deleted. I figure I must be doing something wrong.. I hope my description was understandable..

Hm, that's odd. It might be that you're ever so slightly releasing Option before finishing the operation, which will move the note rather than copy it. Notes can also 'vanish' if you try to move them outside the zone of a region. So if your region is a single bar long and you attempt to copy a note to the following bar, the + will appear but the note will vanish when you let go, as the region isn't long enough to house it. Let me know if either of those things fix the problem. If not, I'll put my thinking cap back on.

@@jonobuchananmusic Hi Jono and thank you for replying. On my 2014 15" MacBook Pro macOS Big Sur 11.7.2 with Logic Pro 10.7.4 it works fine, I select the note(s) and hold down Option and drag to a different note position and that works fine. On my 2020 13" M1 MacBook Pro macOS Venture 13.1 Logic Pro 10.7.6 I found that it did work when I put it on a hard bench top then select the note(s) hold down Option and then drag to a different note position.. The other thing with the 13' MBP Logic Pro I need to resize the notes to make them thicker in order to select note(s) + Option + Drag but it seems to be working now... I think the 13' MacBook Pro needs a solid firm surface to sit on as I have it currently sitting on some paper note pads on top of another laptop computer (lack of space here) this may be affecting the functionality of the Option button. Thanks again, David.

I’ve thought about this a bit more and have a couple of questions. If I build a drum kit using DMD in the way you’ve shown here each “note” plays a single sample. Is there a way to load multiple samples (round ribbons) into the same slot so that the drum doesn’t sound literally identical on each hit? Also what about loading samples that are sensitive to key velocity? Many sample packs give you a range of samples at different velocities. Can that be used in DMD? I suspect the answer is that none of this is possible right now in DMD. But if I am wrong, could be a useful follow-up video. Thanks a million.

Hi Andrew. These are great questions. Out of the box, no, there is no way to load multiple samples onto a single pad within DMD, which means you can't automatically assign multiple samples to a single pad to be triggered by multiple keys, or via multiple Velocities. However, there is a kind of workaround, which is particularly effective if you're happy to layer samples via Velocity. Any Q-Sampler pad/Track within DMD can be swapped for the full version of Logic's Sampler. So if you're happy to use the Sampler to layer multiple Kicks or Snares (as examples), via Velocity, and then to stack these, you can then use Velocity to switch between them. The easiest way to set this up would be to have made a Sampler Instrument in advance with your samples selectable via Velocity assigned to a single note. You can then load DMD, select the Track for the desired pad and switch playback for this pad to the Sampler. Then load your Sampler patch. Lastly, make sure the pad is set to trigger the correct Pitch. I'm very happy to make a video to demonstrate this in the New Year, but I hope that makes sense in the meantime!

@@jonobuchananmusic Massive thanks for taking the time to explain this. Sounds a bit tricky, but doable. I’ll leave it to you to judge if it’s worth a video. I’d be happy to see it, but obviously you decide if there is likely to be broader interest. The last time I used the sampler I found it a bit outdated and difficult to navigate. It feels like Apple should find a streamlined way to bring this functionality into DMD. Maybe one day they will? Perhaps DMD is primarily aimed at electronic drums where round robins and velocity layering are (perhaps) less of a concern.

@@andrew6889-p5c Pleasure. I think it's a great idea for a future video. Next week's episode takes a couple of steps in this direction, as it follows on from this one and will show you some of the benefits of switching Sampler options within DMD.
