Time to repair a bouncing 'E' key on a Logitech G413 keyboard. --- Occasional live-streams at / tassiebob Web-site at www.tassiebob.com File archive at files.tassiebob...
I was really hoping that this would be my problem, as I had multiple bouncing keys. Finally took it apart today, and it would appear the joints are good. Likely my problem is corrosion in the switches as other people have had issues with. Of course you have to desolder every switch just to remove the face plate and disassemble the switches themselves. Still a great video!

That's actually a pretty bad design by Logitech. For some (cost) reason, they didn't go with normal 2-layer FR4 epoxy PCB but instead put 300 zero-ohm SMD jumpers onto a cheap single layer paper PCB, creating 600 lead-free solder joints. Apart from the through-hole mounted switches that can't be reliably soldered either because there is no hole metallization, this PCB is not vibration-proof at all because of the PCB size and lead free SMD components.

you can always argue its cheaper. what really made me mad is the toal LACK of cable guard on the keyboard side. and to make matters worse they put that hard on rubbery cable that puts EVEN MORE stress into the keyboard base I just realized mine is under a lot of stress and its starting to peel. and I see no nice way to fix it without ruining the whole keyboard looks. so im thinking to just let the cable die naturally and change the whole thing once it no longer works.

We have two G413's and both eventually developed the dreaded double typing issue, first one lasted about a year and 2nd one only recently started so it lasted about 3 years, seems like once the issue starts it spreads like a virus throughout the keyboard, will not be purchasing Logitech mechanical keyboards again lol. on a positive note my old Logitech K310 non mechanical keyboard still working great after 11 years of use so far.

I faced the dreaded double tapping recently, literally disintegrating the keyboard against the desk before getting a new one. At first I accepted the problem and took the keyboard apart to replace the faulty switch, then it moved on to another one and so did it, but as you say this branches out and spreads like a virus, getting to the point where all or almost all the keys do it, a complete pain for any key that isn't hot-swappable. Now I hope the Redragon Magic Wand Pro K587 doesn't let me down, but Logitech never again with these kinds of "proprietary" switches.

I watched this vid with only the intent of finding out how to disassemble the kbd. I did not expect to hear that solder joint failures are a thing. So I found mine and fixed it!! The square piece of material that covers the keypad area is because that's where wires would abrade.

Got one today from my local craigslist for ummm 1.5$ :DD A couple of broken keys and in a very dirty shape. I cleaned it and it needs some resoldering and a two new switches, which i have found for 10$ for 10 pieces. Lucky find! I used three logi k280e's over past few years and always thought that all of these mechanical keyboards aint worth the money, now I have a cheap ticket into that. Thanks for the video! Gotta fix that

I did everything on mine except look at the solder, thanks for this. My F2 and F3 kets literally just fell out and drecently my D key has gone from sporadic to nearly zero response which is infuriating. I have foundd that the last 2 Logitech Mice I bought hadd, as this G413 is, been moved to the Chinese factory, and the built quality is NOT like my still working 1984 mouse from them. Its quite atrocious in fact. The one mouse's cable SNAPPED!!! SNAPPEDD!!!!!! Like a ddamn twig. And no I haven't fixedd my D key yet.

Nice video. I only needed the placement of the plastic sticky pad thing, as I couldn't remember where I removed it from. As far as its purpose, I would say its simply a chafe guard for the wiring to lay on. For cleaning, just take that entire assembly with base removed to your sink, run some water and scrub it down with a dish brush and dish soap. No q-tips required. Works effortlessly. Of course you must may sure it has time to dry completely before reassembly.

seems these kb's arent made to last. got one for the cheap, with a few bouncing keys as well. mine are the multicolor RGB type, the g513 carbon. couple of leds have burnt color channels, one wont shine blue for example, so you have the odd one standing out from the color scheme. I'll try the 99% alcohol cleanup before taking it apart, does seem like a chore!!

23:20 - those two keys are different, but on a EU market I guess they are also labeled differently. The right one is what we call a Graph ALT (ALT GR) and it is used to alternate between special letters, like e-ę, a-ą, s-ś, c-ć, z-ż, x-ź, n-ń etc. I was surprised to see, that your's (well, your customer's keyboard) doesn't have that ALT GR!

13:10 That pad is insulating the solder connections (THT) from the USB connecting wire. Not sure if they were forced to do this or did it on their own, but this is quite usual in consumer electronics. Logitech still cares. About your solder mixing and breaking again, that is not really true, atleast I have never heard of it, or seen it myself. I would be more concerned about the pass ripping of the PCB than anything, especially when soldering a second time

i have some keys working sporadically (sometimes not registering) or double registering (Esc, Tab, left CTRL, right SHIFT, Enter, 5, left arrow, backspace and 5 on num keypad). would adding more solder fix them? is this the issue original user faced here?
@tassiebob

That was the original issue I had, yes. Re-flowing the joints with fresh solder will certainly help if it's the same underlying issue that caused my problem.

Try cleaning the switch with warm water/ 99 alcohol and blowing compressed air. Unplug it before doing that. Should do the trick if its dirt causing the bounce.
