Surprise, surprise. I thought Imperials would be worlds apart from the stock pick ups. But they were not and I even preferred the S2 stock pickups most of the time. Thanks for this video! And great playing by the way!

@@haskitt The clarity of the S2 stock pickups seems more apparent when you’re in the room with them, to me at least. They definitely seem to like a bit more of gain from the amp than other guitars with PAF/50s type humbuckers.

Thanks brother, just saved me a bundle of cash, take delivery of my s2 today, not going to bother changing pickups.🤙🏻 The flack the stock pickups get is mostly unjustified, change your settings on amp or pedals i feel. Nice playing too man 👌

Scott you did a great job with your comparison! I have the S2 McCarty Singlecut, and I decided in my infinite wisdom to change the stock pickups for PRS 57/08 which was out of curiosity more than necessity. I do think they sound a little more of what I liked about the stock S2 pickup. But I now know that I liked the stock pups quite a bit. Excellent job with this man!

The 58/15s sounded brighter and more articulate to me in some of the tests. That shocked me. I thought I would prefer the Lollars across the board, but that wasn’t the case. The 58/15s remind me of my Fralin Vintage PAFs. Love that tone.

Great video series! I’m with through to the end. In this comparison it’s different horses for different courses for me. The Lollors sounds more articulate and open, if not thin. And the stock S2’s seemed warmer (hotter of course) but more muffled. You bring up a great point about the headroom. That might be the deciding factor for me. I’m really looking forward to the Lollor low wind video!! And your right, the stock pickups are pretty good. They catch A lot of flack in some forums.

Yeah really a strange comparison because they’re designed to be quite different! It’s pretty amazing to me how once they hit a certain amount of Gain they become much more similar. Not close to the same by any means, they still retain their sound but most of the differences really come out in the Clean and just breaking up tones. Thanks for checking it out!

Personally I think it’s the Lollars in spades. They sound more articulate and clear. I can always add a boost or more grit. But you can’t take those away if they’re already caked in like the 58/15s’ have.

Seems like I’m a bit of a sucker for stock pickups-this time it’s the S2s almost all the way for me. I liked their added clarity and overtone profile more, the Imperials sounded a tad muffled and too soft-edged for me. There were a couple examples that sounded better with the Imperials’ smoothness, but overall they were missing some edge and grit for my taste.
@haskitt

Interesting! I agree the Lollars don't have as much "edginess" the S2s do, I think that's probably by design. There's no arguing for taste, but we're also hearing the hotter S2 pickups hit the amp harder, so there's more harmonic distortion and saturation of those upper harmonics. It is partially the smoothness of the Lollars I love, but the clarity, midrange character and tighter low end is what really grabbed me. From the perspective of playing them, the S2 honestly felt stuffy/muffled compared to the Lollars (and compared to the LT set, which had lots of lows, but seemed more open). I often wonder if I should do a back to back of setting the amp for set 1, and then setting the amp for set 2 - have that be another comparison. Not trying to talk you out of your opinion at all, it's really amazing how we all look for such different stuff in the sound - Thanks for the comment!

I personally think gain matching the clips before re amping would remove the problem of one driving the amp more. In reality, if pickups don’t hit our amp hard enough, we just use a boost pedal so it hits the amp just right.

Great video though. This confirms everything I love about the lollars. Would love to hear a comparison between these and the Duncan Seth lover A2 pickups.
@haskitt

Yeah it really depends on how you want to approach a comparison… I’ve actually stopped Gain matching the clips at all (I used to do it on the back end in the video editing stage)… There are so many ways to approach a comparison and I just try to make it as unaltered as possible between pickups. I’ve thought about doing a comparison where I do a smaller variety of sounds but approach it from various perspectives, including like what you’re talking about.
@mandolinka29

The difference is more nuanced then I imagined. The Lollars are def. quite more refined. I can hear this in low gain and clean (not so much in the medium/high gain scenario) But in comparison to my first brush with changing pickups was going from an Ibanez Gio stock pickups to Duncans, and that was night and day. Listening to this, even though I have a S2 Singlecut standard (has the 7s), I realize that upgrading to the Lollars is a waste of money for me, since its not such a giant jump as the previous example. I am probably better off investing that amount in my pedalboard or swapping the speaker of my Bassbreaker 30R ( I am disliking the V type more and more ) to get gain a change or more range to my sound
@haskitt
2 жыл бұрын
It’s really interesting, to me the difference was night and day. I feel like the whole thing of how they feel under your fingers and what you put into them dynamically to get the result you want is a lot of the difference.

Yeah the S2 def sound warmer on these settings. but as Norman up there said, you can add warmth but you can't really add the air the Lollars have. That's the issue I had with the S2s... on my tube amps I just couldn't get them to sound open.
@Spidouz
3 жыл бұрын
Scott Haskitt I disagree, you can’t add real warmth...the sound of the lollar is too thin to add warm, almost like a single coil trying to sound like a humbucker. It doesn’t work. Pick the pickup for the unique use, don’t try to make them do everything.
@haskitt

I agree that using pickups for their strengths is always a good choice. However, I strongly disagree that the imperials are "almost like a single trying to sound like a humbucker". I picked these tones because if I went for a tone where the Imperials sounded super warm, the S2 pickups would have just been huge wooly beasts. I'm always trying to find the tone that is workable for each pickup. You do make me curious though... I wonder how well each of these pickups (and the 58/15LT) could mimic each other.

I have the SC S2 594 and I am not satisfied with the stock pickups. Although I think on my SE hollowbody II Piezo they work very well and sound great. Obviously two totally different guitars. After a lot of time with various amps I have at least dialed the S2 pups in enough to find things I like about them. But I have to constantly adjust the amp settings when toggling pickups and going from clean to gain. You really got those sounds pretty close on the two brands. Not an easy feat. However I don't think the Lollars are worth the $400 to swap out on the S2 even though they are a bit better in clarity and headroom. I decided to swap with SD SH4 JB and Pearly Gates combo since the SC S2 594 may be more suited to SD pickups, and they are half the price. We'll see how that goes. I really like the Lollars for that PAF vintage sound but I may have to find a Les Paul Standard where they really sparkle. Thanks for the great comparison.

Very interested to know how that combo goes. And yeah that’s one of my favorite things about these lollars is that the neck and Bridge sound so good going back and forth from one another (and middle). Not cheap but I love the combo... I 100% expected to prefer the Lollar's, but I was 100% wrong! I play mostly cleanish and that's also where I heard the most difference. Both nice but more mid-range from the stock pickups and I preferred that by a good bit. Dare I say more hi-fi?
@haskitt

Yeah there’s a high (high mid) frequency in the stock that is more present than in the lollars. That frequency made the S2 sound more harsh to me.

@@haskitt I get how you could feel that way. One thing that I think is undeniable is that at the very least in multiple settings the stock pickups hold their own. Definitely not the night and day difference with so many guitars where once you hear something like a Loller in it you HAVE to make the change. PRS, even in the cheaper S2 range is putting good sounding pickups in their guitars. I know when I buy a Fender today there is a 95% chance the stock pickups will go and go quickly and that's true of the MIM AND US made Fenders. I know in my CE24 I'll probably never change those pickups because they work well for what I want and give me something I don't already have in another guitar. That's taking nothing away from what Loller has to offer either (drooling over their P90's at the moment for my goldtop)!

Yeah, the bridge is definitely more well-rounded than the neck on the S2. Response wise the lollar was just a lot easier to play in lower dynamics.I remember really having to coax the tones out on the stock pick ups for everything.

Are the lollar's the old school single braided wire? If so, how hard was it to swap them out with the 58/15s with the 4 wire coil splitting?
@haskitt

These lollars were 4 conductor, so it was easy to reproduce (tough to actually solder the connections but very easy to see what needed to be done). wouldn’t have been difficult to wire up with braided, just would have likely made switchable treble bleeds or a fun resistors for the pull function on the knobs.
