This 970,000-square-foot campus transformation project for Loma Linda University Medical Center included 17 stories of new adult and children's hospital towers over a shared central podium space. The structure was built with 42,000 cubic yards of concrete, just under 25,000 tons of steel, and was completed ahead of schedule, as one of the fastest hospitals McCarthy has built.
As a Level 1 trauma center, the Loma Linda University Medical Center provides the most advanced trauma care available. The 600,000-square-foot adult tower includes 336 acute care beds and related support space to serve three intensive care floors, five medical/surgical floors, and one ante- and post-partum nursing floor.
The 165,000-square-foot children’s tower includes 96 acute care beds and related support space. The central shared podium space includes emergency, diagnostic and treatment, perioperative, administrative, lobby, food service, and dining programs. This transformative campus was constructed immediately adjacent to a major regional operating trauma medical center and included multiple connections between the new hospital and existing tower. A new façade element was added to the existing tower to visually tie the new and existing facilities.
The Melvin Awards are named after McCarthy’s fourth president, Melvin McCarthy. These yearly awards recognize the most outstanding performance by a project team in each of McCarthy’s regions for small and large projects.
