Nice video. I always find it interesting to hear peoples take on London. The reason for the odd mix of old and new is that 1/3 of London was destroyed in WW2. The spaces were filled in with modern architecture as a way to move forward. You can't see Big Ben as Big Ben is the nick name for the bell inside the tower, not the tower or clock face. The original name of the tower was 'Clock Tower' until 2012 when it was renamed Elizabeth Tower to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Thames is not pronounced with a TH sound. The h is silent. Sounds more like 'tems'. The current 'London Bridge' was built in 1973 and replaced a 19th C stone bridge. It is pretty drab compared to Tower bridge. Hope you had a great time exploring London. I always love the history.

Calling the Union Jack the Union Flag is one of those myths that refuses to die gracefully. The flag was being referred to as the Union Jack within 2 years of it's introduction - well over 150 years before any ships had jack masts (let alone British ships). The word jack has had a lot of different meanings over time (especially in the 1600s) and one of those uses was to informally indicate 'diminutive'. King James (I & VI) ordered that the new flag should be flown on [state] vessels. These flags were very small and it's possible (but not definite) that this is why it became known as the the Union Jack so quickly. It's early use on ships is possibly where the confusion began which created the recent myth.

The new London Bridge was opened by the Queen in 1973. The old one was sold to an American who thought he was buying Tower Bridge! The bridge is rebuilt at Lake Havasu in Arizona. The original London Bridge was built in 1209 and indeed had houses and shops on it. It was demolished in 1831. If you visit St Paul's there is the whispering gallery within the dome. If you stand on one side of the dome and whisper into the wall a person standing on the other side of the dome can hear what you are saying! Finally, London's China town is the largest in Europe. Go to Bubblewrap for a decadent snack!

George Davie: The original London bridge was not built in 1209 but by the Romans in the middle of the first century. Successive wooden bridges came and went until the construction of the first stone bridge commenced in 1176, under the supervision of Peter of Colechurch, and completed 1209. He also supervized the building of the last wooden bridge, in the 1160s.

London Bridge is in USA now, some bloke from America bought London Bridge paint for it sent the contractors to dismantle it, as you do, then found out his mistake it hadn’t got two towers and a bridge raising mechanism. The original London Bridge was made by the romans I think? It was made of wood years later it was replaced by rock blocks and you can actually see the ends of that bridge just below the ends of the existing bridge sort of cowering in side streets as though to say I’ve never had towers and afaising mechanism. So London Bridge resides in a desert somewhere in the US

@PompMag It's not a call to prayer bell ring, it's a celebratory bell ring called a 'wedding peal'... traditionally played as the bride and groom and guests leave the church. Look up any royal wedding on You Tube, you will hear that chaotic bell sound.
@pompmag
5 жыл бұрын
@@kydeanderic @suzyhazelwood. Bells are used for celebrating weddings but I disagree with you, this is not a wedding peal due to the time of day, also Kyde says she went inside and you have to imagine she would have noticed it being a wedding - let alone whilst the bride and groom leave. There are many different peals in church bell ringing many of which sound similar in a confined space as the sounds all overlap and most of the tunes can be used in most contexts. It also does not sound like the standard wedding or celebratory peal which is mainly descending scales repeated over and over.
@trinitywildcat
5 жыл бұрын
@@pompmag I'm going to have to disagree with both of you lol. I am a church bell ringer and how you ring bells for a service or a wedding is basically the same. It purely depends on who is available to ring at that time. If you have a full team of experienced ringers you'll ring something complicated. If you don't then you'll ring something simple, like rounds - that's where the bells are just rung in order from lightest to heaviest - descending scales as you describe it.

Lovely video Guys. London has endless theatres but there are TWO main Theatre Districts. The first is near Piccadilly Circus and called Shaftesbury Avenue. THere are so many Theatres there , all next to each other. the other is along The Strand near Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square. There must be 30 main theatres there, as well.

The financial area is called the City of London. It's a city and county within London rather than a borough like the other 32 areas. It has it's own police force and major (you saw his building), the other major of London is next to Tower Bridge opposite the Tower of London (the motorbike helmet looking building). The area is very quiet on the weekend as its mainly offices therefore most things are closed. I worked in the Gherkin for about 7 years, there is a bar and restaurant on the top two floors but you can only get in there by invitation or the annual open house event, it's was originally nicknamed by the press as the "erotic gherkin". One interesting fact is that if you walk along the path behind the Gherkin there is a grey paving slab with a gold emblem. This is where the remains of a young roman girl were discovered when the Gherkin was being built. The Lloyd's of London "robot" is slightly weird as it was built so that the lifts, stairs, air-conditioning ducts etc where on the outside of the building. This allowed maintenance to take place with out affecting the offices and workers inside. It's also next to Leadenhall Market which you might recognise from various Harry Potter movies.

Yayyyy. Been looking forward to the start of the UK videos =D Well, as I always do, NOTES as I go through the video....lolol. You guys have probably already been informed of things I'll think of and mention, so apologies :) 1) The Queen *Does* live there, but she isn't there all of the time. There are 2 ways you can tell: the number of guards on duty and the flag being flown over the Palace (or any of the other royal residences). If there are 2 guards, she's not there, 4, she is. And if the British flag is being flown, she's not, if the Royal Standard is, she is :) 2) "I can't understand the language" X'D X'D X'D I love Kyde 3) Lol the reason you guys thought the London Bridge would be different is because you were thinking of the *Tower* Bridge. THAT'S the one that everyone always thinks of. I looked up once how that became such a big mass misunderstanding, but I don't remember. Lol. *Note: Ah, I see that you guys went to the Tower Bridge also. So maybe it was just what Eric was thinking, that he was just thinking of the pictures we always see of the original pre-London fire bridge? But still, I think Most people just combine the London and Tower Bridges maybe. 4) Lol every time you guys say "Thames" I cringe xD I think it's pronounced like, "Tems" ... I think? Lol 5) Ooh, the part of the city you guys were in when you were talking about the Gerkin is called the City of London, normally just called 'The City'. That's a Really interesting part of London actually. It's actually THE original part of London. The reason is all modern and stuff now is because of the Great London Fire of course. Most of that part of the city was destroyed. That part had actually still been encircled by the original Roman wall from when the original Roman settlement of Londinium had been founded. I don't remember, but I don't think there is a lot of the really old stuff left (which actually legit makes my archaeology heart so sad. Lol); I believe there's still a few parts of the wall left, and I don't know the ages of most of the older buildings that are left, but I believe most of them are from after the fire, so like the 1700's and on. But like I said, it's actually a really interesting part of London. It's mostly just a business and financial district now, and it's kind of it's own little unique administrative area. It's kinda part of the larger London, but it also has it's own Mayor (the Lord Mayor), although it's mostly just a ceremonial thing I think, but..yeah...lol..I think that part of London is really cool. Even though it's not really as much of a touristy area, it's actually one of the areas I really want to see if I ever get to travel to London :)) Oh, and when you guys were talking about the intersection and all the Roman architecture and all, at 27:00, the building that's behind you guys with the red bus at the corner, that's called Mansion House. That's the residence of the Lord Mayor (which, again, isn't the mayor of ALL of London, as in the entire metropolitan area. Just that part....lol...I Really find that part of London interesting...sorry xD) :) 6) OOH, I had forgotten that you guys saw the Book of Mormon! So Fun =D I've never seen it (don't think I've ever been to a professional production), but that's one that is on my list. Glad you guys actually took the opportunity to do that. Great first video, can Not wait for all the rest. Lol sorry this post ended up being so long XD ^_^

'No doughnuts are kept in this van overnight' is ironic. It's a take on builders' vans which have 'No tools are kept in this van overnight' to deter thieves. I've seen school buses with 'No children are kept in this van overnight'. It's just the British sense of humour.

I love the excitement you guys express. I've scrolled through the comments and here are some annotations not yet noticed. I lived in London for a year in 1984-85. Eric's version of the movie "The Sixth Sense": "I see white people--everywhere!" 12:14 Big Ben is the bell, not the clock or the tower. 32:00 St Paul's was rebuilt after the great fire and designed by Robert Hooke (the first real scientist and the one from whom Isaac Newton demonstrably stole all of his ideas from) and his cousin Christopher Wren. It is so good acoustically because of Hooke's engineering ability.

Did you know that most of the non clock ringing of bells in the UK is done by the local church bell ringing so by hand so on a Sunday when you hear the bells rung it’s not automatic machinery but a ream of enthusiasts pulling on a rope. Most others places in the world use automatic mechanisms to make the peal of bells.

Very sweet, funny young couple with a quixotic and (to us Brits) slightly comic take on London. A few pointers: the Queen is in Buckingham Palace when the flag is up. Don't emphasise the "ham" sound at the end of words like that - pronounce it like "hum" or "em", so it's "Buckingem Palace" or "Birmingh-em". You can enter St Pauls free on any Sunday service time, providing you attend the service, which is not burdensome. Tube trains regularly get emptied, anyone travelling regularly on London Underground will experience this. It's usually when a train has failed ahead of the one you're in in the tunnel. The strange looking Roman buildings are the Bank of England and the associated surrounding structures, the heart of the Square Mile of the City. The small black bird was a Moorhen, a common inhabitant of watery places in the UK.

I'm impressed that you walked and looked around the streets. That's the best way to see London. A few tips ...English people don't pronounce the 'h' in Buckingham. The first bird in the Park looks like a moorhen. The Thames River is pronounce Tems. The older London Bridge is now in Arizona. Some American guy bought it. He confused London Bridge with Tower Bridge so he didn't get what he was expecting. There's no s on the end of Borough Market. It's The Bank of England, not the Bank of London. Peabody charitable funds provided housing for poor people. A lot of it still exists and is still in use in London. St Paul's Cathedral is an amazing building. It was built to replace a previous one burnt down in the Fire of London in 1666. Unfortunately a lot of Chinese restaurant food isn't fresh. It's processed.

What you are calling London Bridge is not the bridge that is referred to in children's rhymes, that bridge can be found in Lake Havasu Arizona USA. It was sold as a new bridge was required (it was falling down) and purchased by Robert McCulloch before being dismantled in 1967 and relocated. McCulloch reportedly thought he was buying the more impressive Tower bridge but later denied that.
