So do I but its odd the west coast lines took so long to develop express emus that were successful while the southern had express emus quite early on electric trains dont need refueling like steam or diesels do so electric units or locos in theory can continue along an electrified line even if line is electrified for several hundred miles meaning even a class 302 0r 305 or semi express units classes 309/310/312 could run from Euston to glasgow theoretically as no need for refueling at end of each run but possibly cost cheaper to make locos without carriages if u have thousands of mark 1s and mark 2s and some pre BR coaches why build extra units if u just build electric locos and just haul carriages and same locos can be used for freight in addition as stated above vacuum braked steam or diesel locos were still being used in parts of uk with vacuum braked stock had they used air braked units it may have caused problems on non electrified lines if no air braked or dual braked locos available so easier to use dual braked electric locos on dual heated stock or steam heated stock then vacuum braked diesels or steam locos could take over the southern had express emus quite early on

Nice collection. Used to love a trip to Euston to see the AC locos. I'll be there tomorrow actually, passing through. Not much point hanging around there any more. How quickly things change that seemed like they would go on forever.

Unusual to find an HST pulling in to Euston, at a time when Euston was supposed to be all-electric! Would I be correct in thinking that this was a service from Holyhead or Blackpool North?

The blue has already explained (thanks Phil6219) and 86224 did carry the name Caledonian but the name was later transferred to 86245 as seen in this video.

Excellent video, brings back lots of memories for me. I was a regular on Glasgow - Euston services from 1977 - 91. I always remember 'Caledonian' as 86224? What was that blue livery it carried at the end of the video please? Thanks for sharing these.

The blue livery was applied to celebrate the 150th? anniversary of the formation of the Caledonian Railway.

Think there was only one or two rakes with these - attempt at budget overnight travel, seated only (i.e. not sleeper)

That's 86245 Dudley Castle, renamed Caledonian at the expense of 86224 which ran nameless thereafter.......

Good video Euston was the last station to use loco hauled trains until well into the two thousands with the introduction of pendolino multiple units Ironically apart from the failed APT of the early 1980s the West Coast mainline from Euston to the midlands North of England and Scotland never had express EMUs like the Southern region did or the Easton region as electric trains whether EMU or electric locos whether 750 volts dc electric live rail or 25thousnd volts ac overhead can more or less keep running provided the line is electrified for most of the rout my guess is the west coast from the north of england to scotland and south to London was electrified between Euston and glasgow from 1960-1974 with Euston not having wires until late 60s early 70s in addition many vacuum braked steam and diesel locos were used with vacuum braked coaches or dual braked coaches and diesels or steam would take over from electric loco when the train continued on non electrified lines for many years although steam locos finished in 1968 so having air braked EMUs may have created problems on non electrified lines if no air braked or dual braked diesel locos were available to be attached to EMU to haul the unit on over non electrified lines like the southern did in theory an electric loco or emu will be able to continue with a journey provided the line is electrified all the way whether a class 86 loco or a 310 unit or class 309 although an experimental project in the early 1980s with a new powerful express tilting emu was tried for a while in the early to mid 1980s known as the APT but was unsuccessful and the project and the units were withdrawn and most scrapped although I think it maybe also due to wattage or ampage etc with electric trains in other words although surburban and semi express unitss can indeed theoretically run from Euston to Glassgow classes 302 303 304 305 306 307 308 309 310 311 312 and later 313s 314s 315s 317s 318s 319s 321s etc they may not handle vast distances as possibly not geared for very long distance but not sure on this as I am only a retired old school train spotter from the 1980s and I am not sure of the science or technology or mechanics etc involved in train maintenance but seems odd no express emus on west coast till now while southern had them even in the 1960s as did the great eastern out of liverpoolstreet

Graham John Baker how do you figure? King’s Cross and Liverpool Street still currently have loco hauled intercity services, although both will soon see EMUs take over.
