Caetano really lived in London, exiled from Brazilian dictatorship on 70s. This music talks about how living in London was peaceful but, but it wasn't his place... In this period he composed many songs in English. Try "You don't know me" or "Nine out of ten".

The song was written by Caetano during his exile in UK during the military dictatorship in Brazil and was released in his third self titled album (Caetano Veloso). It was then re-recorded by RPM on their live album “Radio Pirata ao Vivo” (1986), reason why Caetano is singing with Paulo Ricardo in this version.

Hi Frank, samba comes from African-Brazilian rhythms. It was originated in Brazil. There is no influences of jazz. Later, it was created the Bossa-nova, that is a fusion of jazz and samba. Caetano sings a lot of both rhythms (Samba and Bossa Nova). Along the times, samba had some subdivisions , as of bossa nova, partido alto, pagode, samba de roda, exaltação... and others. Clara Nunes, with Morena D’Angola and other songs, went deep on samba origins and bring back some essences of the roots of samba where you can see clearly the African influences on it.

Frank, this comment is about the previous video, Legião Urbana is the band that has the most performed songs ever in Brazil. And this is no small feat, as, as you may have already noticed, in Brazil there are dozens of musical genres and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of singers and bands. Renato Russo died in 1996, and despite all this musical waste that we have today in Brazil and in the world, the new generation knows and enjoys Legião Urbana. They will be eternal.

As several people mentioned, Caetano Veloso wrote this song while he was in exile in London during the military dictatorship. Years later in the 80’s, the band RPM (whom you’ve already reviewed) did a more rock ballad type cover and it was a huuuuuge hit because Paulo Ricardo, the lead singer of the band, was such a heart throb. So in this version they decided to put the original composer and the cover artist together. I was a pre-teen at the time so I only knew the RPM version and didn’t discover the original by Caetano Veloso until years later. I think to this day many people still don’t know it was originally written by Caetano. The lyrics take on a whole new meaning once you realize it was written in exile.

Frank, about the background history mentioned in the end of the video, that is probably not that much: in the eighties (seventies also, but mostly at the eighties) this kind of display of homoerotic affection between some male singers on stage was quite a trend. It was transgressive, it thrilled the audience, it was a time in which gay community was starting to gain visibility, and some of these singers were indeed bissexual or gay. There were certainly real background histories, and in fact Caetano made some suggestive comments in the newspapers about Paulo Ricardo's handsomeness before (or after) the show... but mostly scenic stuff. A publicity stunt, some would say. People loved to argue if Caetano (and others) were gay or not, and it helped to promote the shows, for sure. In the same vein, you can see a lot of very flirty duets between men and women in brazilian stages way before it... but specially in the 70s and 80s. Then unfortunately came the AIDS, and things changed a bit. Ltdr: a trend from the 80s.

This song is original by Caetano Veloso. In 1968 Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were arrested in São Paulo by the military police and remained in detention for almost two months before being exiled. The musicians lived two and a half years in exile in London and it was during this period that Caetano recorded "London London". The word loneliness appears several times in the lyrics of the song, which describes the sensation of walking through London without knowing anyone. In an interview for journalist John Lewis of the British newspaper The Guardian, Caetano Veloso said that even having the company of friends like Gilberto Gil, he felt deeply lonely in an unknown country.
