The black 11kv armoured cables are fairly safe, unless you stick you hand right on or near an exposed conductor and only if the main hard insulator has been damaged. The wire braided cable may be at an even higher potential, as much as 50Kv, older power cables were seldom marked. I agree that it's a potential security vulnerability, but at 13:07 you've already publicly displayed the exact postal address of the main entrance on this video for all to see.

28DaysLater has kept that place hush for almost a decade actually, people have been going in and out of there since 2011, exploring it without any problems. For you to call to police has not only ruined it for other explorers, but has also alerted the people who may want to access London’s infrastructure for malicious reasons. You’ve given away it’s location, it doesn’t take a genius to work out other ways in. Well done.

Imagine getting something like this so horribly backwards that you think this is "ruining it for other explorers", they even addressed your stupid attitude in the video. The whole fucking point other than them having fun is to identify weaknesses in those networks and notify the relevant parties to get them sorted. It's literally doing the exact opposite of "alerted the people who may want to access London’s infrastructure for malicious reasons." In fact - them releasing the video after the police now know this entry point - it's likely anyone trying this will be caught and stopped. So yeah, maybe rethink this shitty attitude you have.

There are cable tunnels 180' down. Ive worked in them and you're not allowed down if the barometric pressure is low as the air can become foul. They run fom the east end to west London. Thold old telephone cabkes were beibg replaced by fibre optic ones
@viperfrank

That "gas thing" you spotted at 38:44 is a schrader valve. They are used to compress the cable. those local loop cables are filled with an irritant die that comes spraying out if you cut into the cable. It's an anti theft device that bt had in the early 0's to stop people stealing the cables. I know this because I used to be an openreach feild engineer. A lot of those other cables are fibre. Low voltage 230v cables that supply street lighting and street sign lighting ect. Even some underground and regular train line signalling cables run through those tunnels. As well as data cables for street CCTV systems. And cabling for traffic light interlinking, but to be honest most of those will be decommissioned now, most traffic lights are controlled locally by a control box at the signal them self, any interlinking is mostly done by radio link thease days.

The little "nipple" on the cable you queried is a charging point for the oil filling of the cable I have just been informed. This is to inhibit corrosion and to aid cooling of the cables, especially at a join. If you look at the plans of the old hydraulic ring tunnels (plus) branches they coincide with this exploration in build style. The thing you called the sewer was in fact a drain tunnel. A brilliant bit of exploration lads and incidently then building you passed earlier (abv ground) looked remakably like the WW2 telecoms control centre, designed to withstand all but a direct hit. Note how thick the walls are!

14:41 : Black plastic canister with green and black cables entering is a fibre joint. 38:47 : that's called an inline heat shrink joint (which is a lot of whats seen in these tunnels). Standard in copper telephone cables. 15:06 : Right hand side of frame, there is a grey tube with a tag on it, that is lead sheath cable joint, typically air filled and paper insulated, air pressure is maintained at the telephone exchange. 43:59 : a cut lead sheath cable. They're usually quite old, so not surprised that they've been replaced with fibre and grease filled cable. That's all the stuff I recognize as telecoms. You also had electricity (as mentioned), water pipes, possibly gas. I will say though, pretty fucking stupid going into a confined space without gas detection. Seriously guys. I'm less concerned about the power cables than I am about the oxygen/gas situation. It is not just foreign gases you need to worry about, it is a drop or increase in oxygen that can kill you as well. Never mind the fact that those manhole covers go to the middle of the road, so carbon monoxide is also a possibility as well. Apparently, tunnels like these exist in Melbourne, Australia too, though I'm pretty sure that the average joe has got fuck all chance of getting into them like you guys did these, so was still pretty cool to see.

I would never think of measuring gases but that's a good idea. Getting into tunnels like these happens all over the world. Pretty scary how much critical infrastructure is exposed here. If any of these 11000 volt cables had any exposed live parts you would know about it. It was ark out to all the surrounding metal and concreat. They are insulated to the hilt, they have 6 layers including semiconducting and dialectic layers. If there was any risk of getting shocked they would not be laying around like that, there would be risk to engineers working down there. Also they have a earthed lead or aluminium sheath or in the case of the newer red ones a copper or aluminium braid.

The filler valve on that cable is probably for oil. Most HV cables now are plastic but the old ones where three conductors wrapped in paper and then enclosed in a lead sheath which is wrapped with steel cable and tar covered cloth. If the oil leaks out there is a good chance the cable will explode.

No it’s not. That’s a pressurised copper telephone cable, that’s a valve to check the air pressure on the cable. A low pressure reading will indicate a probable cable failure. You guys should be aware that there can be noxious/ asphyxiating gases present anywhere along these tunnels, often present in a “bubble” form... these WILL kill you. At least carry a gas detector with you.
