I watch any documentary about the Tower hoping to catch a glimpse of my late father, who was a Yeoman Warder, but this seems to have been made around the time he retired. That vicar baptised my daughters. Nice to see his face again, and the faces of the Yeoman Warders i knew. Happy memories of the Tower.

One thing seldom mentioned here is that Anne Boleyn was already pregnant at the time of the festivities at the Tower. So, how on earth did they have time to do all of these restorations/new buildings/ etc? The fact that historians have found no foundations leads me to believe that these buildings were temporary, perhaps made out of wood, or a combination of wood and canvas.

You are missing a primary piece from the armour of Henry. Notice the two holes on the breast plate. Sub-lings would not allow the death of the king so they devised devices to protect against a broken neck and back. The death of the king means an end to their gravy train. The missing device is a brace, bolts and wingnuts. The device protects the neck from being broken from the impact of the lance strike by bracing the helmet forehead and visor to the breast plate. After impact, snot flow is excessive. It is nick-named the snot rack because you blow your nose free of blood and spit out the visor openings which collects on the strap brace. Protection from a broken back is a very high saddle back. Other winning measures were bolting the suit to the front of the saddle making horse and rider a one piece unit. The competitor would not be allowed such luxurious benefits, almost guaranteeing the king a win. Henry's armour skirt is to hide the bolting to prevent an unseating. The primary way to win against the king would be a helmet strike, and thus the need for the additional helmet bracing. Another win would be to drop the king and horse (prohibited contact). If the king could not remount with-in a time limit, the opposite would be victorious. Of course the horse could not stand for Henry was bolted to the horse. The horse was then armored to prevent a stun win.

Great the pity that the palace's traditional role before coronations was not kept. It's continuity from the Normans to current days lays bare the imperative "what price England?" More than any royal place, the Tower may answer; the blood of weaker kings, tragic queens, princes, lords innocent and lords guilty, and the spectre of religious schism, civil war, even the blitz. The price always too high. England always worth the measure. Say I, anyway.
