S stock can be seen outside London fairly frequently. They are built in Derby and delivered to London via Tamworth, Birmingham & the Chilterns, entering the tube network at West Rusilip. There's been at least one a week for six or seven years now.

You won't feel a difference but you will hear it. The digitally operated motor control will pulse the speed of the train in order to maintain a specific speed. You can hear it on the Northern line train sets especially. And watch how they stop too. They will literally decelarate to 0mph, precisely, promptly at the green line marker instead of slowly lining up. Very efficient. The only thing they could do to make it more efficient is if they open the doors at 2mph upon deceleration, just as they do with the Berlin(?) trains. Anyway, one step closer to fully automated digital train control. No need for a driver if they add an infra red camera and a whole bunch of proximity sensors (line tresspass collision and suicide prevention system.)

This Thales system was mostly design out of technology used on the Vancouver Skytrains “Selectrac”. It has operated without a collision since 1985. UTDC and much later Bombardier developed a lot of the system years ago. Vancouver system uses twin leaky coax between the rail. 2 leaky coax due to the centre induction rain for the Linear induction motors used on most of the system. Extremely reliable software. Age of the trains are becoming an issue no, however they are beginning to refurbish the original mark 1 cars.

I hope TFL consider further deploying DTGR like on the Piccadilly and Central lines when the NTFL is introduced the demand on them is huge and there are nowhere near enough trains to cater for the number of commuters at rush hour. Now I know that Crossrail will take some pressure off the Central line but the Central will still be incredibly busy and with all these housing developments in suburban London, its is quintessential to install DTGR on these high demand lines. The Central Line is really creaking at the seams, can't wait to see the back of the unreliable, ugly, dated 1992 stock which seems to breakdown everyday leading to huge gaps in the service due to cancellations.

As someone who does all of their commuting during the rush hours in New York it really just depends on how bad the lines are. The 6 trains are terrible as they randomly go express after 14 Street. However most other lines are pretty reliable outside of the C and E lines which I’ve seen twice have trains running every 15 minutes even though it was during a time school’s got let out and the trains would be full of annoying students.

TIB980D Productions I would have to agree with you here that there is some sort of operator/human error. This controlling technology has been in operation since 1985 on the Vancouver Skytrain, without there ever being a train/train collision. Collisions are usually with thrown on tracks from overpasses (which caused the only minor derailment of one car). Collision with careless or suicidal people in stations in which the trains cannot stop in time. Currently Vancouver run 74 secs between trains during max frequency, however this can be increase to 54 sec. Driverless/computer controlled system is the way to go.

1968 Victoria line kzitem.info/news/bejne/q5-JuG2FcaZmdaQ The line is equipped with an Automatic Train Operation system (ATO); the train operator closes the train doors and presses a pair of "start" buttons, and if the way ahead is clear, the ATO drives the train at a safe speed to the next station. This system has operated since the line opened in 1968, making the Victoria line the world's first full-scale automatic railway.[note 2] The original signalling has now been replaced with a more modern ATO system from Westinghouse Rail Systems.[2][22] LUL claims that this is the world's first ATO-on-ATO upgrade.[23] The new system allowed a revised timetable to be introduced from February 2013, allowing up to 33 trains per hour instead of 27.[28] This in combination with the new, faster trains will increase the line's capacity overall by 21%,[22] equivalent to an extra 10,000 passengers per hour. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_line www.trainweb.org/tubeprune/Victoria%20Line%20ATO.htm

well as I already wrote in another comment, there was the Seltrac System in Berlin, allowing much more trains per minute, 2 minutes is nothing special for an underground system. Seltrac is able, to run 60 trains per hour, including a 20 second stop

How will this new signalling work with Chiltern trains on the met? I can't see TfL paying to equip diesel trains with the new system.

I think my predicts me as far as Network Rail May's Train Timetable, or summer so fort? So Hammersmith and Latimer Road is a first phase to test it out, if it fails may inconvenient just like EMTRS Cambrian Line last time in last summer - that mustn't happen but it will investigated. On the other hand; if the test does success on the route, also others to follow, then we will partial operation CTBC ATO in place at the time, as long as reality check any documents for insist likewise Risks Assessment to work carries out, so they will know do the job to keep just that. One more thing to add as far as London Underground, Overground, Elizabeth Line as Crossrail, and Thameslink services wherever Keep-On-Moving as its a core; the answer of scenarios is - a big fat Clock 'COUNTDOWN Timer'! That it is needed while the Trains complete stop the platforms and All Selective Automatic Doors Opening operation to do so before Doors Closing after when a Time Is Up but Signal manual points control including - Junctions. So therefore should routine Destinations each train directions wherever to go as far the clear routes and to the other, and so fort. So you see, Countdown Timing needs worth punctuality to keep services will running every year in 24/7.

The trains are 72 stock, my understanding is that it will be done with the Piccadilly Line and that contract is waiting to be bid.

I agree, headroom is low, seats are small, air ventilation is poor etc, they seem outdated compared to the Metropolitan, Jubilee and Northern lines.

Frainie 12 personally I think they should, but they probably won't. Guards are definitely a thing of the past for the tube, but Merseyrail, another metro-esque system, still uses guards with shorter trains and drivers. Personally I think TfL should reinstate them, and they have done on the DLR, which drives itself.
