I think the problem is that long balls on stat sites can also be a nice diagonal pass from the centerback to wingback. Not the typical long ball to the strikers we associate with the term.
@CharlieHolmesT

Absolutely agree, I would have thought damn near all of City's long balls are diagonals into a player on the wing or switching play into space; Not at all the contested long ball to a big man associated with long ball styles.

I think teams don't necessarily play long balls because this is a great attacking option, but rather as a defensive option. If teams start making a lot of short passes without having the quality to do so effectively they end up losing the ball a lot in dangerous areas in the build up aka at the back and in midfield. Even against weak sides this is suicidal. Though I haven't watched the games, I imagine this is what Crystal Palace under Frank de Boer looked like. So instead they just play long, because if they lose the ball the opposition still has about 60 meters and 10 men to go through.
@SpooninLeadsToForkin
7 жыл бұрын
Very true. Not to mention, if your long ball is successful, you're in the offensive zone with only a small number of players to beat. Essentially, a long ball style is less risky whilst also high reward, but the probability of success is low. Leicester demonstrated in their title winning 15/16 season that the tactic can be more effective than short ball styles with the right personnel.
@drewdavies3010
7 жыл бұрын
this is what bournemouth keep doing. we had no long ball option in our first season and kept conceding sloppy goals due to slight passing errors, so we developed a long ball to try and beat a high press. Thats probably why we have a shocking completion rate for our 60 long balls. However, if you are not under the cosh for most of the match you can use the long ball to pass to team mates and as a way to switch play. most of the top teams rarely come under concerted pressure and so don't have to play defensive long balls, or as they were known, clearances. Another point is that in another video from umaxit it was shown that counter attacking was the best way to attack. The long ball is often the only way to set these up against a high press and it would be interesting to see a statistic of goals scored after a long ball is played in the move.
@AnhVuDaogreengrass17
7 жыл бұрын
Very interesting video, thank you, but I'm not sure about the conclusion. I think for weaker sides, long ball serves as a way of reducing pressure on the defense. Short passes in defense while having a low defense line means a higher chance of losing possessions in dangerous positions, leading to goal scoring opportunities for the opponent. Long ball means if they loose possessions, it would be in the opponent's half and more time to organize a defense.

The fact remains though that nothing on a football pitch looks more breathtakingly beautiful than a team-cutting long ball that creates a goal. My best ever assist was a lob through ball and it feels delightful even now.
@GuidodeKortOfficial

For the top teams long balls are also part of mixing up their game to stray away from the possibility of becoming too predictable. Other than defensive clearances of course. For a team like Spurs for instance, Toby Alderweireld has the accurate, long crossfield ball in his locker and uses it as an option to differ from a conventional Spurs attack.

i agree, yet the teams that do long balls in tough situations (Man United come to mind), are labelled long ball teams, even if they do a relatively low amount of them.
@Pokemonmaster150b
7 жыл бұрын
Also, top teams who do Long Balls often use them to take advantage of personnel with Aerial ability. Take, for example, United. While they're a short-passing team for the most part, they use long balls to take advantage of their height advantage with players such as Lukaku, Pogba, Fellaini, Matic etc. Same with Tottenham and Harry Kane (who is not as tall as Lukaku but is pretty decent in the air), and Chelsea and Alvaro Morata (who, like Kane, isn't super-tall but is good in the air).

I'm not entirely sure your rationale stacks up. The teams who play fewer long balls aren't necessarily better at long balls. The likelihood is that if your predominant style of football is short passing, the only long balls that will be played are when they are the percentage option.

I don't find it surprising that teams that use less long balls are more accurate, firstly because the teams that don't use long balls tend to have better players who will be better at passing , long or short, secondly opposition teams won't be set up tactically to intercept long balls because they normally don't use long balls and third there is a smaller sample size so it's easier to have far higher percentages Edit: just watched the next 30 seconds and he addresses some on those points, this is why you watch the video before commenting

There's a massive flaw in your analysis though. The top 6 teams are going to be better at everything. There's a massive gap between 7th and 20th, 7th is a really good finish in the table and 20th is relegation. If you look away from the top 6 you can see there's no correlation between success and number of long balls
@MikeyLove22

One key thing missing from this and that’s any mention of the target man and having players like Andy Carroll explain why West Ham have good stats in the long ball regard. I imagine Burnley’s stats will improve the more Woods plays.
@woutervaanhold7907

I think there should be 2 definitions in the video: when is a ball defined as "long"? and when is a pass defined as "successful"? Mostly passes are considered successful if they end up with a teammate, but with long balls it's mostly about getting higher up the pitch. It doesn't matter if the ball is lost there. Playing a long ball gives the defense a temporarily relief or creates the opportunity to pin down the opponent at it's own half.

Just a question how are the stats calculated for long balls? With Spurs I feel they might have an inflated figure as Trippier pushes up in his wingback role and gets picked out by ball playing centre backs this is being compared to a West Brom hit it up to Rondon and hope for the best. I feel that these two scenarios should not be comparable as they are different styles of playing.

What do you mean "most other teams should reduce the number of long balls" ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they play long balls more because their inability to complete phase 2 accurately with short passes. If these weak teams try to play short passes, they might keep losing the ball in midfield itself .. I don't know....it seems more risky. And, you have shown no. of long balls attempted per game , and the percentage of long ball success. But I think what matters is the number of SUCCESSFUL long balls per game and the number of chances created by long balls in comparison with no. of chances created by short pass progression.. From your stats, Burnley plays an avg of 33.6 ACCURATE LB per game , while Man City plays only 29.7 Accurate LB on avg. Just sharing my instant thoughts 👍❤️

Long Ball/Long Pass: An accurate long pass that takes advantage of a midfielder's/defender's long-passing ability and the Aerial strength/Speed of the forward. (Example: Pogba to Lukaku/Zlatan, Alderweireld to Kane, Kante to Morata, Weigl to Aubameyang, Modric to Ronaldo, De Boer to Bergkamp, The Flo Pass, Iniesta's through-balls to Messi, Vidal to Lewandowski, Pirlo to Totti/Inzaghi/Giovinco) Hoof-Ball/the bad kind of Long Ball: A long pass that is performed because your team has a shitty midfield and a tall striker, so you just randomly hit it upfield and hope your big guy can head it down in a bad position for the opponent. (Example: Pulis-era Stoke and West Brom, any Allardyce team, Burnley, English League Two teams, American Soccer in the Youth and NCAA level, Shitty FIFA players, Pub Leagues)

As much as I like Bournemouth's (and Eddie Howe's) style, they don't really have the personnel to fit said style, which is why they're at 19th place right now. They don't have a striker w/ good hold-up play (e.g. Morata, Lukaku, Kane), a top-class midfielder (e.g. Pogba, De Bruyne, Ozil, Alli, Coutinho), a good passing Defender (e.g. Alderweireld, Luiz, Koscielny,), or a Keeper with good distribution (e.g. De Gea, Lloris) If Howe was in charge of, say, United, Arsenal, or Tottenham, he'd be balling.
