A tip for you to consider, if you have a neck strap on and stretch your arms out to make the camera rigid, it helps to prevent any camera movement. Works for me and certainly worth a try!!

Nice video again Henry I agree one point definitely it is a hack you could go in the mountains without a coat but why would you. I have forgot my tripod before and done handheld on a very windy day is a nightmare I love being out there as you do so if it takes a little bit longer to set the scene so be it Why Rush and risk not getting the shot after you have gone all that way I’ll see where you’re coming from but using a tripod is the way forward if you don’t like the A heavy on bye hey lights one a little support is always great. I am not having a go in the slightest I love all your videos and your enthusiasm. But there are thousands of young and old photographers out there simply don’t take a tripod because they can’t be bothered I am so I am so and I’m pretty certain I just about all of them fair photos will not go to the next level I am so once again thanks very much for sharing look forward to your next one.

@@HenryTurnerphoto right, got ya! 👍 My original statement was made in haste by the way... I wrote that before the end of the video and of course you addressed that point towards the end so please forgive me for that. 🙏🏼 I seem to be getting a little defensive these days regards to photography and the process of it. When I hear people opting to practice photography hands free or buy certain phones because the image quality is great etc I feel a sadness for the art of taking a photograph. You summed it up perfectly when you talked about that certain romance with setting up shots, using filters, taking time and enjoying the whole process. For me I think I'm afraid of the "click and go" method becoming the norm, mainstream method. Anyway... Keep up the smashing work, loving the images and the down to earth way you communicate 👍

That challenge and experimenting is part of the enjoyment of photography. My Olympus OMD EM1 MKIII (that's a mouthful!) has such a function in-built - they call it ND. But in essence, it does exactly the same. Takes multiple exposures and stitches together in-camera (these are RAW files as well). I would still use my tripod though for that process and connection with the landscape.

Always enjoy your videos. It is funny you covered this topic as last week I took a couple of long exposures handheld and I’ve just posted one of them up on my Instagram. I shot at 1/5 of a second and was laughing in my head at the thought of how blurry it would be, but somehow it came out pretty decent and I’m still not sure why 🙃. I thought anything under 1/30 of a second would be pushing it for the camera I have and the other image (I haven’t posted yet), I’m sure I shot at 1/3 of a second handheld/kneeheld but again, came out fairly decent 🤷🏼♂️. I just thought I’d share as I’m sure better camera’s would manage these shutter speeds pretty well. I only have an entry level dslr but it always keeps reminding me what it’s capable of capturing. See you on the next one 👍

That was great, .... cup of tea comment and all. I can relate to your "hack" comment too. I guess it all depends on what your definition of a hack is. There was a time in the not so distant past where multiple exposures could be done in camera, on film or digital cameras, which required much more planning, and ND filters, and tripod. Anything photoshopped beyond exposure / tonality / contrast could be considered a hack for old geezers like me but then again, it is an evolving medium, so really, anything goes, especially if you're on a long hike where lugging gear can be an issue. Ten shots @ 1/60th each = 1/6th of a second. I'm curious what the duration of the photo on the right was. Thanks again.

When you blend the frames to make the "Smart object" try all the various layer blend modes. There are many different effects from producing the most white to producing the least white. (Good for getting rid of nasty tourists too). There is a photographer who posts on Instagram ( forget his name) who uses 60 000 frames for moon shots!! One of my future learning events will be to take a video, split the various frames, and then blend them as layers. This will hopefully be faster than using many single frames.

On the subject of tripods, yeah at a push with vr and p.s wizardry you can get by without one,but should you really do it? I myself lug a Nikon 810 around with four primes, get up with the larks, and sometimes drive for a few hours to get the shot. Why would I want to ruin the whole thing by not using the best technique possible. Also the benefits of composition and the use of base cannot imo be overstated. Each to their own though.

Have you looked at the multiple exposure mode in your D7200? This will allow you to blend upto 10 exposures in camera to create a single file (nef or jpeg I believe). You can set this so that the camera splits your set exposure over the number of frames chosen to give the correct overall exposure. This will give a similar effect to an ND filter depending on the time interval between shots. Obviously you can't adjust for movement by aligning images but it offers an option if you dont have a set of filters with you.

Turned our nice again Henry, as ever an interesting viewpoint ( no pun intended). I guess with photography that when you experiment, you never lose, you just win or learn. I learn A LOT ! .. but I must confess that I do enjoy a bit of tripod faffing, but if you want to be agile ( and that's am ambition I've never satisfied probably because I eat too many pies ), travelling light has to be the way. Interesting though how you can make pretty good equivalents of things like long exposures with a series of frozen frames and a bit of Photoshop know how. I'd not have thought of that, so thanks very much... a good little tip.

The are all tools one needs to achieve a desired product. I shoot real estate. Henry, so nice practical test, thanks! Catching smooth scene from fast waterflow with short exposures is (in theory) quite simple. If you take normal, say, 1 s exposure on a tripod, you would need 60 succesive shots to store same amount of light by using 1/60 s exposure. Henry, you got (was it) 12 shots, so in this test your equivalent exposure was 12/60 or near 1/6, which kind of can be seen in you result. So, I'd strongly encourage you to do just another trip there and test this simple theory, so much more pics, for fast water flow. We have over 50 cm snow coverage and ice on waters here in Finland, so I can't do that now, sorry :)

An important thing that you forgot to mention, this technique also lowers the noise and thus effectively lowers your ISO. A doubling in the amount of photos means a halving in ISO (i.e. 8 photographs (doubling 3 times) would take ISO 1600 to 200). Although this is just in terms of noise, you wont get the lower iso benefits of higher dynamic range, color depth etc. But if you are stuck in having to use a high ISO of a certain scene and cannot lower it due to the shutter speed, you can also use this same technique for getting lower noise in your image. Anyways it is a great technique that is very useful for travel photography. I very often feel like I miss a tripod when traveling, and it is a good workaround if you do need one and don't have it.

However, with the ‘lockdown’ situation we’re all in I know what you mean, it somehow doesn’t seem right to be seen ‘enjoying’ our daily walks so, for now, it’s handheld and discretion.

I found out about the technique after seeing a video from Tony Northrup. It’s an ok way of doing it I think, but i agree with you that I prefer to get it in one shot with the tripod. And using tripod and filters can give more flexibility with length of shot I find. You’ll need so many shots for a shot over 5 seconds for example, it slows my computer right down, lol

Stumbled on this idea a few years back while playing around with HDR software (Photomatix), was taking multiple shots at the same settings over a period of time. I was trying to capture cloud movement. I wonder if Photoshop may be trying to select the sharpest components in each shot when the images are stacked. Using Photomatix or similar software and minimizing the HDR effects, you may find a better effect. My best result (for cloud movement) however was when I took 30 minutes of photos at 1 shot every 30seconds or so, on a tripod.

Excellent!.. I ditched my tripod 5 yrs ago. Here in Utah there's some much to shoot I'm always on the move. Either in the mountains or high desert in southern utah. It just got in the way. And it's very " freeing" without it .

I think it is not just ok. It was a great experiment. And even if it wouldn’t have worked it wouldn’t have been wasted time. Because whatever the outcome is, you always have one result.

The D7200 was my first camera and when it comes to landscape images, colour, clarity nothing beats it :)
