The rising international and local demand for long pepper has led the Meghalaya Farmers' (Empowerment) Commission to launch a project aimed at expanding long pepper cultivation in the State. Long pepper, or Piper longum, also known as "Sohmarit Khlaw" in the local dialect, is a highly regarded traditional medicinal spice growing wild in the region and found in forests clinging to tree trunks. To encourage organized cultivation of long pepper, the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission partnered with the Directorate of Horticulture and tasked the District and Local Research Stations & Laboratories (DLRSL) to initiate a pilot project involving the establishment of nurseries for long pepper cuttings from which they will be distributed to farmers to extend the area under cultivation and increase long pepper production. As the first endeavor of its kind for long pepper in the State, the project holds great promise for benefiting local farmers and boosting their economy.
