One thing you didn’t mention is altitude sickness. The best way to prevent it is to do another hike that tops out ABOVE 12,000 feet two days before. It also needs to be at least 2000 feet of elevation gain. There are plenty to choose from, but you have to plan ahead if a permit is required and make sure you start early enough to get a parking spot in crowded areas like Bear Lake trailhead. Driving up to 12,000 feet at the pass and walking around on flat trails won’t really help at all. It has to be strenuous enough to get your heart rate high, but also something you can be fully recovered from after 24 hours rest.

Hope you didn't crap along the trail like every other flatlander does.

Hey Weston - I’m a dietitian and BMI is super old school, nothing is BMI dependent. If you’d like a personal consult regarding proper nutrition & hiking for an arduous hike, I’d be happy to consult with you.

BMI was used as an example. But BMI would be more accurate. BMI is mostly irrelevant. The fact that you're saying 4000 calories for everyone, that doesn't make sense. I'd love to hear your consulting advice.

e.g. if my friend weighs 90 pounds she needs 4000 calories. But I weight 170 and need 4000 calories. Probably wouldn't work out. She actually would need 8000 calories because shes not in shape and could never do this hike and I would need 800 calories because that's actually how much I brought on the trip and highly recommended. I recommend the jimmy dean sandwich and 2 granolas. Skratch can help but only bring a small amount - like 1 bottle or .5 liter #yolo

"how much water do you drink in 12 hours?" ok no, why is it taking you 12 hours? "there are no fill stations" ok yeah because you're hiking in mostly high alpine terrain, its a MOUNTAIN FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!! 4000 calories? definitely BMI dependent and that is REALLY high unless you're in really bad shape but if you're bad shape you should get in better shape by hiking easier mountains. I'm done with these tips I cannot proceed to watch anymore when these are insane points way too early on in the vid.

@Evōke Your Adventure I hiked it 9/16. Brought 3 liters of water, 0.5 L of this was skratch. I think 4 liters is ideal. I brought 1 jimmy dean sandwich plus 2 granola bars. jimmy dean is 400 calories and granola are like 200 a piece for the ones I had. So 800 calories - I was fine. I think I ate when I got home 2 hours later. I finished in 6 hrs 50 minutes. I ran the last 3 miles because it was boring.

You’re just being an obnoxiously arrogant fitness snob. Most people will need more than 800 calories for a full day. If you don’t good for you, but not everyone is you. Its not a “first time” hike, but it’s not Mount Everest either.
