In my desk recording setup, I use a mic preamp which has a balanced output, and then a passive direct injection (DI) box in reverse to convert back to unbalanced and then a converter cable to go into the camera’s mic input. The DI has an option for ground lift so that can break a ground loop. It has to be a passive DI to go from balanced to unbalanced because active ones only work one way. Mine’s a Radial Pro D2 which is a premium option, it’s also stereo but I only use one side in this setup.

Those videos are always awesome because people actually go out of their way to make stuff just for the channel, or like in your case, when they come across a sticker they think would be good for YOUR collection... It's a simple way to 'give back' to the people that make it possible (having the stickers/gifts shown off on a shelf in the background) I think YOUR fans would send in some of the best nerdy stuff... I even have a few stickers I woudl want to send in one day :) - Think it over, it might be a cool quarterly or even monthly segment :)

All the space of a minivan (and more), none of the waste of a pickup, and a bulkhead so your giant server rack doesn't become the end of you in a crash. But yeah, a station wagon or a minivan for occasional cargo use is so much better than a pickup which exists primarily for the profit margins of the manufacturers.

Pretty please Jeff, just talk straight on to camera. Content is King - please don't waste your time with multiple camera angles of your 'to camera' shots - we REALLY don't care what the side of your head looks like - and we DO NOT need video editing gimmicks that have only evolved to try to hold the attention of viewers with severely limited attention spans. That is not your audience. Personally I find so many of these editing and camera angle gimmicks extremely off-putting and distracting from what is of real interest, which is what the presenter is saying primarily, supported by whatever B roll is appropriate to illustrate what the presenter is talking about. By contrast investing in quality audio capture and decent lighting is NEVER going to go out of fashion.

I mean minivans have a place imo but it seems once people don't have the need they don't downsize. Heck, uhaul is probably what most people need imo...I'm a big fan of properly designed public transit bc I hate driving since I'm audhd. But I love the fact of showing off Lowell like that...wish I could afford any of that stuff. Even just an 8u rack would probably be overkill for me 😂

True; if you don't have a bunch of kids in an American city, a minivan is way overkill too!

@JeffGeerling yea I see so many people that have these big suvs and trucks for no reason...I just wanna be able to see in my little sedan easier when navigating parking lots or have other methods that don't exist in rural areas to get around XD

I use magnetic sheets for stickers. Then you can move them around when you like to change thing up or lose them when you move.

I used to be a musician and educator and had a fully finished basement where I taught in person, recorded, and did video content. I spent years getting it right and I loved it. Shortly after my son was born I became a software engineer (I was a tech nerd as a kid and, spoiler alert, devs make more money than musicians so it was the right move for my family), and ended up moving house to my closer to my in-laws. My new basement is a bit bare, but watching these videos is a combo of deep nostalgia for my old space and ideas for what this basement could be one day! Thank you for taking the time to share this process, as much as I love your tech content it's these videos that make me appreciate you as a human the most.

For those phone cables to actually give you 100mbps they must be single core wires otherwise, if they are the normally used stranded+cloth crappy wires you will be lucky to hit 10mbps half duplex.

At 67, I never watch "sponsored by" segments... until now. Other creators should adopt this format.

Originally i thought "No! Now is the best time to reimagine your workspace and organization!" But it makes sense though if you need it to be up and running as fast as possible to do real work.

There are WLED libraries for the Raspberry Pi Pico as well as libraries for the Pico W which allow you to set up Home Assistant integration (intended for making custom sensors). Might be worth looking into making a custom WLED controller if you want Home Assistant integration.

Might end up doing something like that. I think there's also a Govee integration that requires Internet, might at least give that a try first and see how annoying it is.

That tester is more expensive than every ethernet cabling I have put together
