great tips on breaking the fill plug loose first. i bought a $10.00 fluid pump from harbor freight. best $10.00 i ever spent. sometimes you don’t have enough room to use the bottle with a hose on it.

Also, a good idea to inspect your vent hose. The fluid in these axles will heat up. If the vent hose is blocked this can create pressure in the axle housing. This overtime can push fluid out at the bearing seals. Of course, this is a worst-case scenario.

As Jimmy @1Road points out you should be sure to follow the guidance in your vehicle's owners manual. While there aren't too many variations in gear oil from one to the next, it's simple and cheap insurance to follow the OEM recommendation. The manufacturer of yours might be Dana, or Eaton or (???) but the key---at the very least---is to look at your owner's manual. Eaton makes the diff in my truck and they specify several possible choices on their website. The synthetics cost a bit more but they flow better cold, and they probably perform better hot. What's not to like? When all else fails the 80W90 dinosaur juice probably works in a pinch but does not have the benefits of synthetic.

This reminds me of my friends 1988 5.0 leader formula stick ( manual transmission) he had his rear differential fluid changed. After he did that and made all kinds of rattling noises. I told him all you have to do is put in 2 ounces of whale blubber. It’s a special lubricant cost about $15 for a little bottle. His father worked at Chevy and he didn’t believe me he said I didn’t know what I was talking about. But I talked my friend into doing it I told him if that’s not the problem you lose $15 but if it is. And sure enough we put in the whale blubber. In the noise stopped before we finished pulling out of the garage.

The way I see it 75w90 and 80w90 are very similar. Once the oil is warm should not notice any difference as long as they are both XXw90 weight. It is not unheard of for someone to get the 75w90 rather than 80w90 because he wanted a synthetic oil and they are more common as 75w90.

If the drain plug will not come out and you know the capacity of the gear box, you can stick the bottle up to the drain hole and squeeze as much oil as you can from multiple bottles until you get the proper amount of fluid in it. Not as good as using the fill hole. You would probably have to have four bottles but as long as you have two nearly full quart bottles left over after you poor the oil from the not quit empty bottles into the others, then you would know that it is full. FYI. If you are changing the gear oil in a boat's propeller drive, the only way to know it is full is to squeeze oil into the drain plug until it comes out of the fill plug. Some quirk of construction makes it difficult for gear oil to flow from the upper half to the lower half which will make it seem full at first but the oil will slowly flow down to the bottom half and if you do not check it before using it, it will be way low on oil.

I filled my fluids last year easier than using that tube. I got a 1gal garden sprayer pulled the brass tip out and glued a tube to it then I put the oil in the tank pumped it up and put the tube in the fill hole. It took a while to push the thick gear oil but I didn't have to hold the bottle up.

The green is there to draw attention. To highlight just as you'd do in a book. Couldn't really see it well in the natural deep black color. So, rather than draw an arrow and write with big bright letters, I opted for highlighting the exact area I wanted. The green was chosen due to the complimenting color of the red shirt. Lots of thought goes into these thumbnails.
