This is one smart, beautiful young female Gila woodpecker. No other bird has figured out how to get the nectar out of this feeder, which is designed to block other birds' beaks, and only allow a hummingbird's narrow beak to enter the hole. And up until now, I've only seen a select few adult Gilas doing this, never a young one like this. Note how she sticks her beak into the hole and laps up the nectar with her long tongue. My wife said she is draining the nectar at an alarming rate so she has to replace it much more frequently than ever before-every two days now instead of once a week! :) I guess a young, growing woodpecker needs all the nourishment she can get. Not all Gilas can figure this out either, so I assume this is a sign of superior intelligence. Next she'll figure out how to unlock the patio door and come in while we're sleeping and raid the refrigerator. LOL!
