BINGO!!!!! Super happy to see this video, thank you so much for making it! I got into Angelique last year and it captured my imagination instantly. I agree with all those critiques-- the lack of in-game content, the god forsaken RNG, also the deciphering the meaning of elements for me was really hard at first?-- but the world is so full of charm, I just have to give my heart to it. It doesn't offer much on replays, I'll admit, but I go back and try to big-brain everything regularly. Park dates are the worst. Never thought Luva could drop me so hard over my thoughts on a couple getting cozy on a park bench... I've been delving into Angelique Duet, and while it doesn't have quite the visual charm of the original it DOES add some interesting features. You can cook sweet for the boys, send letters, and even get some really heartwarming events with Rosalia. I also got some dates with Dia, and she started talking about her days with the previous Angelique

Is it strange that early otome games voice cast comes from mecha genre? (Angelique and Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side alike) Like we have Gundam dudes and Macross dudes and sometimes Evangelion dude (Akira Ishida)

It makes me so happy to see a video essay on Angelique, and on otome games in general!! I'd love to see you cover more otome in the future, they tend to get overlooked by most visual novel fans (with the exception of those already into otome) because of their "girly" nature, and they really deserve more love. There's a lot of interesting works, from those of Ruby Party, Otomate, and Konami's Tokimeki Memorial Girls' Side, to smaller indie devs both in Japan and the West. As someone who's been playing them for nearly a decade (I first played Hakuoki in middle school, I'm a college student eagerly saving up for each new release now), it would be really cool to see someone apply a critical lens to them!

This is such a great video! I've really loved Angelique ever since I found Indigozeal's translation back in February. I can't read Japanese at all, so I haven't been playing the game, but I have been watching the OVAs and reading the manga. Like you said, it's just so charming! As someone who loves otome games, it's been really interesting to go back and see the earliest instance of the genre.

I was always fascinated by this franchise... bc I can't play it as I don't know Japanese, so it was so entertaining to hear you ramble about this piece of otome history, even got me hyped to try it with the translation guide! I enjoyed your passion and genuine love for this game even if it's a flawed experience, to the point I'm subscribing, I really enjoyed this video and how you exposed it! I was entertained, intrigued and relaxed!

If it interests you, please talk more about more Otome titles. There's so little representatives of it outside of blogs. People talk about LNs and Gal Games more in otaku circles and gave it praise, and recently, creators like you give it a critical lens. Early titles made by Queen Rose has an introspective look to the Otome protagonist and worlds. Otome games to me has a lot of problems, majorly how the protagonist is often treated by the cast and what is often considered the "end state" for women as a whole. Male LN protagonist saves the world at the end of their game and already has sex with their girl for magic mumbo jumbo reasons (consensual sex from both parties is the exception, not the norm in the games I played). Female protagonist becomes a sweet wife/girlfriend at the end of their game. I think given your experiences and more understanding of Japanese old media. Seeing you getting into classics would be nice.

I've played at least two angelique games. The angelique duet is the superior version for me, first because it's available for the DS and the playability is very nice, and second because Rosalia is a sweetheart and you can choose her as the protagonist. If duet had full voice acting that would make it the perfect game. I like the (almost) endless possibilities of the RNG system, it made it a tiring but positively engaging and adorable game.

While I agree with you the the world building is fairly limited (which is somewhat understandable given the age of the game and the huge amount of text it still manages to contain), there is some, including answers to many of those questions you posed. The queen’s power is waning because it always does eventually - that’s the cycle of queendom in this world. The queen is really more like a goddess who supports, sustains, and even creates all the life in the cosmos. But her power is finite and when it begins to fade, the universe becomes unstable and so a new queen must be crowned. The “queen exam” is the customary way to do this. The guardians have a power called sacrea that they awaken to early on in life. Once their power is discovered, they are whisked away from their families and brought to the holy land to train as guardians. This causes some of them (Zephel especially) real angst. Like the queen, the guardians also lose their power over time, and thus new guardians have to replace them. This leads to some pretty melancholic conversations throughout the game where the guardians ponder how long they have left, and reminisce about the lives they left behind on their old planets. The guardians live longer than normal lives - they are essentially immortal until they lose their power, at which point they become ordinary humans again and die at some point. Yikes - I didn’t mean to write so much. Anyway I’m a huge fan of the series, and I loved seeing you bring some of it to life for English speaking audiences who have been deprived of these lovely games for decades.

I can feel the Lumiale Love seeping through the review. I liked Lumiale because Camille Vidan was my favourite Gundam protagonist lol Wow the animated cutscenes look really crisp compared to my dankass emulation capture. I don't even think the Win95 version looked that good. One of the many things that sucks about the park date is when the Guardians visit on days AFTER whatever powers were given/taken, THEN ask a question regarding your planet's population. How am I supposed to know that?? I love how intense music plays while you're talking about the part where there are obvious flaws you don't hate the game. Speaking of music, thanks for touching on that. I'm pretty fine with anything as long as it doesn't bleed my ears, nor am I versed enough to form any kind of opinions on it. And thanks for the shoutout!
@AmelieDoree

The Camille rep definitely bumps him up a notch in my mind, haha. There's some special hardware built in for video decoding in the PC-FX, so I'm sure that's a big part of why it looks so good. Like I show in the video, I play these games on an old TV and it *almost* looks DVD quality at points there, it's really neat! Oh yeah, that's the absolute worstttt ;_; So many park dates got snubbed because of that for me... I really wanted it to be clear that by no means is Angelique a bad game or one I dislike, I feel like it's super easy for critical video reviews to delve into pure negativity and I wanted to avoid that ^^; No problem! I'm happy to give a shoutout to other people looking at dating sims and VNs :D

I didn't check the *full* cast list back when I actually discovered what even was Angelique, but it honestly makes so much sense to have the late Kaneto Shiozawa here. He was often cast as either villains or ikemen, no in-between. The people who did the casting knew exactly what they were doing in picking the CVs!

i have a series recommendation. tokimemo girl's side. 4 came out in 2021 and is the most accessible. its an otome with stat raising mechanics. i love the series and fell in love with it over a decade ago. 1-3 have fan patches and detailed walkthroughs. i recommend the ds version of the first game (love plus, talking with the little brother doesnt forward time and you get the secret character Jin Tendo), the second season is fine on ds, i personally prefer the psp version of 3 but both are playable. the psp version (premium) has some slight quality of life tweaks. whole games are voiced, you also mentioned tokimemo, the series girls side is a spinoff for. so i doubly recommend it. i adore tokimemo gs so much. i fell in love with the series years ago and not a single otome series has been able to come close. and skinship! you can touch the boys. where depends on your friendship and affection level. the box boy is technically the main boy. all boys have at least two endings. there's also friendship routes for the boys and friendship endings for the girls and academic playstyles too for those that don't want the romance. oh yeah, the fourth game is on switch! it's the most accesible. and i bought the guide book from bookwalker (couldn't get a hold of a physical copy around release) and i recommend getting that too for date preferences, clothing preferences, and gifts/chocolate preferences for the boys. nanatan (affectionately) is who i plan on going for next. ryouma's route was so sweet. i love this series so much, and wish more people played them.
