Much easier to quickly dip into than trying to find the exact video and timestamp. I'll leave some reviews soon. I've been enjoying my homegrown veg all year thanks to you, and a few others. Zero expenditure on herbs, potatoes, onions, squash or beets this year. Here's to the next.

I’ve had a super spring/summer season here in Western Australia, also a temperate climate. My father in law asked me what I’ve done differently because there are no white fly in our vege garden this year. I told him that I practice ‘no dig’ gardening and I used cover crops in winter, planted more flowers and diversified what I was planting. I’ve learnt so much this year! 🎉

Always found growing chilli peppers from seed in the UK a bit of a challenge. They seem to mature near the end of the year (Sept-Oct) but by that time the weathers cooler and half of mine die off before they've fullly fruited. This year I've over wintered a couple in the hope that they survive to give me a boost...Like Charles, said, it's constant learning

Good morning, Charles, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA I so agree, pulls weeds while they're small. We have 2 weeds; summer weeds and winter weeds 😅. I can weed every week of the year and get almost the same amount! I just uploaded 2 videos on the 2 Yardfully Geobin Composter that I purchased for my small backyard. I'm going to be able to produce a huge amount of beautiful compost. PeggyHelblingsGardenWhatYouveGot7920❤ I'd love your input Charles ❤ 46°F at 5a.m! Our frost dates are January 1st to 31st only. That said, we had 2 freezes (32°F) in February. Mother Nature writes the rules and makes us rewrite our future plans 👍 I hope you have a bountiful 2024!

My daughter gave me your "No Dig" book for christmas. Great read. You must have had good sales, I see others here got the same book in their stockings. 🙂 On the crop rotation thing, I'm a fan of it, although I don't live or die by it. In a way no dig is rotation, it's just the growing media is being rotated instead of the crop. The fridge is where I keep my seed. Once packets are opened moisture can condense inside the packet as it warms, so I don't leave them out of the cool too long. It certainly breaks any dormancy in seed, especially parsnip. I put the demarcation between spring and summer growth down to overnight temperature, or averages. Nice long bright 20deg days in spring that sink to 5deg overnight just don't provide that acceleration. As soon as the overnights reach 10deg, growth explodes.

This is a great list of hints to consider as we plan for 2024. Staying ahead of the weeds is a hard but important lesson. I’ve found my greatest ally in that quest is the large amounts of leaf mold I’m blessed to have due to having big trees. As they get crushed and collected by the mower, I dump them on my garden beds in a thick layer. In the spring I move that aside in the planting area to allow the soil to dry out a bit and warm up, then pull it back around the seedlings. It keeps the weeds at bay and serves the plants well during our brutally hot July and Aug. One lesson I learned last year is to turn the leaves a few times over the winter so that they break down a bit more. Besides weeds and pests my greatest challenge is our travels. We enjoy seeing the world, but it is tough to leave for a week or ten days and stay up with the garden. The timing of trips is something I have to consider.

Look at these two comments: Russell from Queensland, ‘The Free Radicals’ "Even through the most challenging lack of rain and disturbed weather patterns here in South East Queensland where I live, no diggardens have continued to produce whereas most other gardeners in the area have given up on their production." Rebeca Martin: "I've used this method to get rid of Bermuda grass in my garden (and the rest of my yard). IT WORKS. Just keep an eye out for any possible trouble spots. After a year, you should be good to go"

Oh how time flies Mr. Charles! We already have our first batch of tomatoes germinated (sown on 24th of December) with a growth of around of 5-6 cm's each for just about a week or so and these tomatoes are planned to go in the polytunnel 15-16 weeks from now around the beginning of April! We've also planted some things as an experimentation just a couple of days ago, rather the method is experimental - we planted a tree(peach), a shrub(blueberry) and a vine all in 2 tires each(the tree in 3) filled with compost, my idea is to give them a HUGE head start and see how well they do like this (similar to the no dig gardening method) and still potentially have the option to go and spread their roots in the ground eventually (the tires are ontop of ground) soo yeah it's going to be exciting to see the results!! 😀

This is nice to see Steven, and I'm sure that will help many people. I've noticed how people love to see the creation of a new bed with cardboard on weeds and then compost on top. Have some transplants ready that you can put in straightaway because that helps understanding of how you can plant straight into compost. Usually in dryer spring and summer months, I walk on the compost first to make it firm.

Good morning (here) and happy new year Charles. What a delight to wake up to your energizing video this morning! We too are in zone 8 with oceanic influences here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, or rather just up from the valley heading into the beginnings of the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. We're creating our homestead (a retirement dream of some 30 years) and have yet to get our gardens going out here, as the most pressing thing for us right now is to get our house build so we can retire and get moved out here to be able to tend it. But we have got some fruit trees going already and are hoping this year to finish laying the groundwork for putting up the house starting early in 2025. In the mean time, we've let our veg garden in town (Portland) go the past couple of years, and the weeds have rebounded with a vengeance!!! Hearty dandelion varieties with sturdy tap roots and deep rooted doc and mallow, not to mention the mints and grasses, Ugg... We definitely know what you mean about weeds, but have felt so overwhelmed by this project we've just let the garden slide. However watching your video today I'm thinking that we absolutely need to take whatever seeds we still have on hand at least and make our in-town garden go this year. After all, I did pick up your sowing diary last fall and have everything I need in that to help me time my sowing schedule, etc. I mean what ELSE was I planning to use it for right?! 🙃 The space we have is relatively small but we do have 11 raised beds, and some black plastic covered with wood chips in the paths and weeding and compost in the beds will give us "a lot of food from a small area" as you say, not to mention feed our souls and keep the dream of our 'gardens to be' out here on the land going, feeding the energy we're pouring into developing the land and building the house itself (mostly DIY). This massive project is such an exciting thing to be doing at the start of our 'final trimester'; building our own home and putting in a small orchard and market garden. What a life! Thanks for all the encouragement, training and inspiration you continue to put out on your channel for all of us to learn from and enjoy. Just seeing the images of your amazing garden inspires!

Thankyou again Charles and Edward/editor of your videos. Covers to battle pest, thank you for recommending again. Ground hog had babies frolicking last season so we had to put up low voltage wire. Coyotes were hungry too and got the babies. Life must go on. Tomatoes picked early is such a good thing for plants and getting more to ripen. Thankyou. We've had no snow at all. 44 degrees. Zone 6b. east coast USA. Have a healthy and Happy New Year to you and all you love.

!00% with you on weeds. I have 130m² including paths, greenhouse & polytunnel. By going no dig & about 20 minutes hoeing & 10 minutes hand weeding a month, I have no weed problem. On successional sowing: I have your diary & no dig book but would really like some sort of chart giving suggestions for complementary first & second plantings. I try to get this right but on occasion, (2023 - Mum's passing, then the heatwave) made getting my head round what to sow & when & whether to sow in cells or open ground just a tad difficult.

It might sound silly, but I'm pleased my beds are looking more like yours this year. Watching this I was reminded of my first inspiration - Patrick Whitefield made half a dozen videos before he died. Like yours, it was useful to see how someone in the same climate zone timed things. I do prefer your more organised approach, but it takes all sorts. All the best for the new year and thanks for your guidance!

Great tips as always, Mr Dowding. I might add trying to keep some early self seeding flowers in situ to kickstart the parasitic wasp cycle. Otherwise they fly off elsewhere in search of hatching pests. Oh. And put a few beer traps down for the first caché of early overwintering slugs and snails to put a dent in their reproduction endeavours. 😃 Happy New Year!

Hi Charles Happy New Year full of health and happiness. Once again I am touched by your sincere willingness to help us along with our gardens. Unfortunately I have a really tiny space to grow, nevertheless I do what I can with what I have got (2 cabbages, broccolii, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, a few beetroot and lettuces). Haven't got the space to compost I buy it. All this due to your encouragement, Thankyou. Hope you have a happy growing year. Warm greetings from Greece.

Hello Charles ! Love your videos, so helpful and inspiring. I have started making compost but will not have enough for this summer. I wonder if you have any suggestions on buying bagged compost. How do you know that it is safe and good quality?

Best of luck because it's hard to be sure. Mushroom compost is usually safe.

Your videos have been so enlightening! I am amazed. So I live about an hour outside Vancouver, B.C Canada. It looks like my last frost date is usually said to be May 7th, would I then just start things a week prior to you? I'm very interested in the different climates and zones. We are at sea level here or maybe 40 meters above, but we seem to have higher temperature fluctuations yearly than you do in your area. The winters can see -20 centigrade, and summers 45-45 centigrade, and that can be a real challenge on both ends. My father was born in Falmouth, I may have to migrate haha.

If you keep the soil health, & well fed, you can grow what you wany. Isn't that the reason you keep your soil healthy? I do like your channel; I would like to have a lot more space to plant, living in a mobile home park. we don't have so much space, in fact, I think you have more space that the 208 units I live in takes up... Not saying you may make more on a Mobil home complex, you may, but your videos would be a lot less interesting :) Godspeed, & thank you for the vids you have made. I had to put an add on to my first mention... Some of the seeds I have were from other gardeners, they told me what the seeds were & when to plant, others I have saved from past plants. Some of those I drop like snow. I want a lot of green onions. I love green onions, but they grow so slowly. Thank you...

Charles, thank you so much for giving us the benefit of your experience with no dig gardening over the years. I am about to install a no dig greenhouse, and in digging the footings I realised that my topsoil was sitting on a base of really bad building rubble. The topsoil is only about 20 - 30 cm deep. I am torn between leaving it alone and taking steps to rectify the issue. I have the opportunity to dig out the topsoil, save it, dig out the building rubble and replace the topsoil amended with compost. This goes against the no dig philosophy, but I think it would benefit me in the long term. What do you think?
@CharlesDowding1nodig

If you are going to be in that garden for many years, I reckon that is worthwhile, to remove most of the rubble.

Thank you Charles for all of your beautiful videos and sharing all of your knowledge. I’ve learned so much from you! I haven’t started my garden yet because we just moved to a very overgrown yard in October. Since moving here we’ve found lots of voles. Can we still do no dig or do we need to do raised beds. Please tell me there’s a way to still do no dig. 😊
@CharlesDowding1nodig

You are so welcome Sue. Voles are difficult, for diggers as well. Clearing all surface growth and then mulching the ground will help in the long run, but in the first year I would expect some problems. Partly because they can hide under the cardboard for the first three months or so. When I moved here in 2012, I found two voles, but only in the trial bed I dug! I caught them with a mouse trap set with peanut butter. I advise you hang in there, catch the ones you can, maybe grow not too many carrots in year one, and I'm sure the population will reduce nicely.

Hello again from Poland Charles! And Happy New Year to you! I agree with you about collecting our own seeds. I had a huge problem with onion seeds last year. I had NOTHING from them. They just did not germinate. This year I am going to try to get some onion seeds from the small onion sets I planted in autumn. Maybe I will succeed...But the leeks are still a big worry for me as t&e seeds did not germinate either and apart from big markets I have very limited sources of good quality seeds. We will see. Wish me luck. About the 15th of January I am going to sow some peppers. Riping takes a long time as I have my small vegetable garden in the forest so I"m fighting for the light.

You are the only one that says it REALLY IS NOT EASY - I think it’s so VERY HARD My soil: I’m not sure what is going on😢 my crops and leaves had sooo many wholes, white flies and everything 😢😢😢😢😢😢 I am wanting to grow small this year with grand successes with small garden. I have so many leaves can I put those on my veg patch? Your place is looking amazing!!!

Happy new year Daxa. I am sorry to hear of your difficulties because I know how hard you try. Check out my new video in two days, about best seeds and that might help you to select just the ones which will work really well. I wonder also in your case, whether you need a bit more space around your beds so that pests cannot come too close. In my case it's grass which we mow and keep short. Or it could be cardboard initially on any weeds, a little (3cm) woodchip on top.

Happy New Year Charles from Belfast, N Ireland! Another great video to inspire us and get us thinking about how to make them most of our growing spaces for the year ahead. The past 2 years my young Kale plants have been infested with ?white fly , mid summer. Not not sure if they are getting in via the greenhouse as I net the plants once in the garden. It's the same story with all of my brassicas. My brassica plants, especially Cavalo Nero don't seem to grow very big thought Autumn and Winter with disappointing harvests. This year I will sow them a bit earlier and keep a closer eye out for pests. Your produce always looks amazing!!
@CharlesDowding1nodig

Thanks Lezley, may 2024 be better 🌱. Usually if there are many aphids it's a sign of soil needing more fertility, because currently your plants are a little weak and that's attractive for insects. I would add extra compost this winter. Any kind including old animal manure.

I so much appreciate all the good advice I've gained from your videos ever since I discovered your channel two years ago. You made winter fly by and got me really excited about seed growing and planting. I'd really like to see more videos about growing more vegetables in less space since there always seems to be too little room for all the different vegetables I'd like to grow in my little garden. Module planting has been a game changer for me since the ground is usually too soggy in March around here. Twice I've tried your method of multisowing beet roots and both times it was a huge success. There always seems to be so much to do throughout the growing year that in late fall I really feel done with the garden. But then winter sets in and towards the end of the year I start looking forward to the new gardening year and can't wait for spring to arrive. So much so that I usally roam around in the garden in December and January during mild and not so mild weather and catch up on any chores that can be done. Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed when people walk by and look at me like I'm an odd duckling since no one else is in their gardens but when I get home I feel so refreshed and energized that I don't really care. Greetings and a successful and enjoyable new gardening year!

@@CharlesDowding1nodig yes, thanks. Actually I did and I had some lovely harvest from that already at the end of December. It's been freezing for a week so I leave them alone for now. I also missed a few plants of my spring sowing last year and they've self-sown. Now I have tons of plants from that as well. They are still rather small but since they seem to be quite hardy I hope I will be able to harvest them in early spring. Lazy gardening... 😃
