Fallout 3 looked good for 2008? My dude, Fallout 3 isn't just ugly to today's standards it was ugly back then. In 2008 we had games like Spore, Mass Effect, Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Fable 2, Soulcalibur IV, DMC 4. All of those games looked great, some of those games still hold up today. Even games that shared the same color palate or urban environment put Fallout 3 to shame (Metal Gear Solid 4, GTA 4, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2) It was a FUGLY game when it released, no style, no fidelity, nothing interesting to look at.

It was jank back then, its still jank now. MGS4, GTA IV, Gears of War 2, Fable II... all games that came out in 2008 and better graphically and technically then Fallout 3. Lets not call Fallout 3 cutting edge cause it wasn't then. Revisionist history doesn't do anyone any good.

in lieu of the fallout tv show coming out i replayed fallout 3 on the steam deck and i enjoyed it thoroughly, the guns don’t feel as clunky as people say, the companions felt fun, and the random encounters are some of the best. Over all the game is now in my top ten and has way more charm then anything coming out recently. (no nostalgia blindness, i didn’t play the game when i was younger)

To me, Fallout 3 is still rather recent, it came out years after 9/11, 9/11 to me feels like happened not too long ago, but half of professional sport athletes werent even born when 9/11 happened, freaking ridiculous. And yeah, about graphics. I remember seeing NBA LIVE 2005 for the first time, and though it was the most realistic thing I have ever seen. Now, looking back, OMG.

The sad thing is Starfield fails because it seems like a step back from Skyrim/FO4. if it had exploration like either game, it 100% wouldn't have gotten the hate it did, and fans most likely would have written off the "jank" of the game because of it. But when exploration is pointless in your title about exploration.. lol

i think games from that era were so brown/gray/dull because it was the era when every other game was trying to up their graphical fidelity and they figured that, because the real world isn't all vibrant and colorful like in videogames from before, desaturating everything would make it look more realistic. TBH, at the time it did feel a lot more realistic when the games were all gray and desaturated but obviously now we don't see it that way anymore.

Maybe I just play too much Fallout, but really felt Starfield lacked for a supporting system like VATS. While they probably couldn't "get away" with copying it whole cloth, some kind of lore-friendly aiming system could have kept things a bit more fresh. As it is, it's Fallouts combat system, just... less. VATS is such a versatile system, well beyond how it appears at first glance. You can use it to detect and identify enemies and mines for a long range. Line up accurate shots without a scope. Cancel out at any time. Guarantee a perfect hit with the critical system. And even just slow things down if you ever overwhelmed. Did the Starborn powers added something similar? Honestly didn't get that far. I assume they're more like dragonborn powers. Also wish they hadn't ditched the "living NPC world" idea too. It added a lot to the gameplay, even just them going to sleep at night, letting you take advantage of assassination skills. Fo4 raiders were a bit shit in that regard.

I remember playing Oblivion on the XBox360. The game was buggy as hell. The patches Bethesda released for the game on PC were not released for XBox360 so all 360 players played the game vanilla till the end. Yet, I totally enjoyed the game and played 250h with Shivering Isles" included. And yes, back then I thought this a full on simulation and not a videogame...

Both of those games were amazing at the time. It's shocking to see how our perceptions change with time (a la 18:24 vs now) and it's a rare game that can do stand up graphically for more than a handful of years (for me, Fallout 4 being one of the very rare examples; I can add more, but I don't 'need' it, unlike every older Beth game 'needs' it; then again it's their last big game minus SF and ThatWhich ShallNot Be Named).

The coolest thing I remember about any video game growing up is the random Easter eggs that would be in them. I feel like Bethesda never really does this.. imagine if starfield took place in the same universe as Elder scrolls or fallout? Earth could be destroyed the way it is in starfield, but there should be random remnants of evidence what happened of a nuclear war on earth. Like by finding the Empire State building on earth you may be able to find a 10 mm pistol on top of it, that would be so fucking exciting to even find it over and over again. Or a world in the Starfield universe where Tamriel exists or did exist. This would’ve been a perfect opportunity for Bethesda to pull all their universes together. Whomp whomp.

I might be the only one who thinks this, but you can hear the enthusiasm in Todd's voice, the passion for what they created. And for me, that's what Fallout 3 was about. That's the reason why Starfield failed. The chess club did not win in Starfield's case. And I'm really sad. Games for nerds should stay that way. It made them so awesome, genuine, passionate. You don't need to please everyone. Just show what you love about it, and like-minded people will come to you. Hell, those were the days I long for, filled with wonder and discovery
