EXACTLY! I agree. My dad is Cuban, he speaks spanish & he's 3shades darker than Zoe. He says he is cuban, pero still he considers himself black. As do I. People nowadays act like its a bad thing to even be considered black.

I'm not saying it is, but I, personally, identify with being Cuban..not "black" nor "white", simply and amazingly Cuban...the same respect and pride African Americans have for their heritage and culture is the same I have for mine...nothing wrong or bad about considering oneself as Hispanic either, you know...:}

I have noticed in the performing arts like ballet, contemporary and even native dance troupes that I never see a dark skinned latina. I have seen Brazilian and Cuban Ballet documentaries where the students know they are being discriminated against but they can do nothing except keep on dancing and/or form their own troupes. It's just a sad fact of life that lighter skin is still considered to be more feminine or becoming.

Its only in America where the idea of being "black" bears any identity specific notion. B/c she's Latina, as we saw in the clip, though she considers herself a "black" Latina, she's still Latina, which isn't an American notion, which counters the point she's "black", but rather merely perceives herself as such. I don't consider myself "black" b/c I'm Latina. No argument here if she wants to see herself differently, but I love my culture way too much to consider being anything than what I am. ;)

thank you for explaining that! Damn people are so ignorant like they never whatch TV or read a book or travel. This shit makes me sick when I have explain my heritage. I am also Dominican and within my family we are so varied in color - I have cousins that are blond blue eyes, then the ones that look indian, then the ones that are dark - to put it to you this way, if you put my whole family in a family portrait you would not know we were all related, simple as that! we are a beautiful people

Listen,I KNOW what I'm talking about, I'm Dominican just like her, we are all Latinos. Here in Dominican Republic, there're White, Black, Brown, Tanned, Blonde ALL kind of people , and we're all considered Latinos. We don't classify ourselves like black, white or yellow Latinos just Latinos. All countries of Latin america has their own Cultures but that doesn't mean that we are different.

In America, yes, and only if she responds to that...I am just saying that my family and I as well as the many Hispanic families that I know, do not consider ourselves "white" nor "black" since they are their own category...she is only "black" Latina because she considers herself as such...no other reason...

She's Dominicana ...so obviously....Its just an issue here in the states....and as we all know, people do change when the come to the states and if they can pass for white or at least think they can they will be Hispanic when its convenient and white American when they think it will work for them...Hence all the "White Cubans" in Miami who are Republican...

She considers herself "black Latina", but "black" is an American concept formed back when by white society trying to keep their class separate from their darker skinned counterparts (true story!). She is Latina, so technically, she may be like half-"black", but the Latin side counters that. (Mostly because we're just awesome, lol!) My family is Cuban & an array of gorgeous colors. I do NOT consider myself "black" because my culture & people are NOT "black", but we are Latinos..& proud of it! ;)

Latino is a culture not a race. There is only human. As far as the people who made up the social construct are concerned, your phenotype determines if they consider you "black". I'm "latina" but there is no box for that on the papers for my job and I'm certainly not phenotypically white.
