Jay, he keeps looking better and better! This is one smart horse, and he's starting to figure out the bio-mechanics of how be efficient. That beautiful stride is as pretty as ever even as he's going through the gangley juvenile growth phase as he builds muscle and definition. I think it is quite likely that next Spring he's going to take you to the places we all dream about. I love that you've chosen a mile for his first race. That's a bold move, but he's got it in him, so why mess around, may as well get serious from the get-go. Build towards endurance and the speed will take care of itself.

Jay C. Nehf Jay, he reminds me of Beholder: He is very intelligent and you can see how he's taking in everything you are teaching him and trying to figure out how to best apply it so that he can be as efficient as possible. He seems to understand that efficiency is the big difference. He keeps his feet close to the ground, no unnecessary vertical movement, well except when he gets excited LOL!, but he's young and that is normal. I liked your comment on another video where you said: "He can really get out of hand sometimes". Well yeah, he so badly wants to show you how very fast he can run, if he could just figure out a way to talk you into it :) Well he's going to have that chance in the last furlong of his first race, which by the way, is when? I want to be sure to watch him run. Speaking of Beholder, WTF was that all about, Gary trying to run from the front while setting a pace and all?? You could see she was not happy with that decision at all, I'm sure she was thinking: "Gary, what are you doing? Let's either fade back and then close or turn me loose and let me build up gap too big for them to close. Hello Gary, are you listening, Gary? Earth to Gary..."... Regardless of that momentary lapse of reasoning (Yes the Pink Floyd Album), I think if you could get Gary on Lord Admiral, look out World! I also think she's still the horse to beat at the PCC and the BCC...

Wow, That seems like it would be a fun place to live and see all the horses. Thanks for taking about heart rate, that was all new information for me. I do cycling, and we all monitor HR on our human selves very closely. Also very interesting that he's barefoot, I didn't know they can go that fast and their feet be okay. Great Post!

Lord Admiral looked very impressive his first race. Very professional too.. How did he come out of the race? I've enjoyed watching him get started and now racing. Thank you so much for giving me insight to this amazing process.

What are your thoughts about starting him at 1 mile in a maiden race as a 2 year old? Not that I know any better, but I thought most trainers start their horses at about 5 1/2 furlongs, and then add distance as they mature. Do you feel the horse is going to be more of a closer, thereby needing the extra distance to make up for a slower break from the gate?

Bingo! The Admiral would not be at his best in an all out sprint whereas the other horses would. So we'll turn the tables and go long first time out. He is now 16.2 1/4 hands and 1120 lbs. compared to most 2 year olds at 15.1 or 2 and 950 to 1,000 lbs. he breezed last Friday 5f 1:01.6, 2nd fastest of the day. Now we'll do some mile works and gradually pick up the speed to get him ready.

Dan Casey god sake!!!It is NOT right to back a horse under the age of 3/4 the horse isn't even half its height at that age and they end up crippled and have arthritis when they are a lot older!!!Im not a racer and don't get me wrong Im not an expert on racing but I just can't get my head over the fact that you's break these poor horses in at the age of 1 or 2 like what the hell they're yearlings and yearlings are meant to be grazing about in a field and being loved by lovely people and then at the age off 3/4 introduced to the bit etc.

Gee, you've certainly convinced me that you are not an expert. LOL! If Lord Admiral is half his height at 2 years old he will be... 11 feet 4 inches tall at maturity. Ashley, I've given you ample opportunity to present an intelligent opposing point of view here and you are either unable to find supporting facts or you are just not willing to make the effort.

You mean "too", not "to". And it's "get", not "got". And hoping a horse collapses is contradictory to your primary premise. Mellchen- I can block you with one click but, for now, I will let you comment if you present an argument backed up with facts. Absolutely, there are bad people who abuse horses, as there are bad people in any business. But it is simpleminded to think that everyone is an abuser. Most of us in the racing business pour our hearts and souls into the care and training of these horses, not to mention the money we spend to provide them with everything they need to perform as we ask.

I encourage all horse lovers to contact your local government and ask that two year old horse racing be banned for ever. Many of these young horses will die from being forced to run with leg fractures and being drugged so they don't feel it. They run them until they "break down" which means death to many of these beautiful young animals. Help stop horse abuse! A horse does not fully develope until the age of four and sometimes even 5. The owners and trainers of ZENYATTA knew this and waited for her to develope and she is still alive and well. You should all be doing the same thing!! HORSES BEFORE PROFIT.

2 year olds have the lowest fatality rate of any age group. Also, horses that raced at 2 break down less as older horses than ones who didn't race at 2. The stats are on the Jockey Club's website.
