It’s actually not as bad as I imagined it would be. Honestly the animated characters have realistic bodies. People maybe who don’t know much about animation (and how extremely difficult it was 40 years ago) might not understand but having realistic-correct body proportions-is a huge achievement back then. Just look at early Disney-their Silly Symphony shorts before they did Snow White. Disney too had to learn how to correctly animate realistic proportions and their early attempts are laughable by today’s standards. Granted this is a later date than Snow White, but still it’s a small production and probably the people working on it were having to learn too. I’m impressed too that the story is pretty close to Peter Jackson’s LOTRs. Basically even the shots look very similar. (The characters especially even move closely to how the live action actors did) Again animation wise that says to me they at least thought about how a character would realistically pose/react in the scene. In animation you can do anything. To have poses being almost the same is pretty incredible.
@crosbyspsychedelics1383
Жыл бұрын
I found it kind of funny that the animations move like actors. I’m so used to animations being able to do things that we can’t in real life, like actually stab and orc. So to see an animation where the flat part of the sword seems to hit and then bounce off is hilarious. It almost looks like they were trying to animate it like live action actors would do it. This is definitely one of those moments where the bad (compared to todays standards) animations add to the show don’t take away.
@narnia1233
Жыл бұрын
@@crosbyspsychedelics1383 Yeah, I don’t find that bad but actually good. Lol. Animating realistic movements and body proportions, etc. is very difficult. Even details like folds in fabric, when drawing that all by hand, to get it to look realistic you have to know a lot about how thick the fabric is, etc. to know how it would move. The capes on the hobbits in this look very close to how the capes looked on the real life actors when they are running. The running and walking too isn’t all the same. That’s another very difficult thing to do in animation. Realistic walk/run cycles. And obviously they took the time to give them each unique walk/run cycles. Gandalf actually walks like he’s carrying a staff and is the eldest. The hobbits walk and run in a distinct way too. It’s actually not bad. Maybe super realistic style isn’t popular anymore, but to be honest, that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

As I remember, it was filmed with live actors then animated over them. I loved this movie as a 10 year old and think it gets a bad wrap. They did the best they could with the technology available at that time. Similar to Star Wars A New Hope. Sometimes it’s less about the visual effects and more about the story.
@abdulmismail
Жыл бұрын
@@matthewduffy4435 This is very true. It's the reason why the animation was so realistic. However, the only drawback was they ran out of funds (or didn't get funded) so they couldn't complete the second part as the first part was the first book and 1/2 of the second book. There was a "Return of the King" cartoon but not by Bakhshi.

Tolkien was really specific in the Silmarillion about the fact that the dark forces (which included balrogs) had no ability to fly. Balrogs actually don't have wings at all in Tolkien's written works. Tolkien uses a simile in the Fellowship of the Ring when describing the Balrog, saying the darkness around the balrog was LIKE wings, but not that it was wings. So both movies have it wrong...turns out though that balrogs just look really cool with wings, that's why they have them in the movies.
