Basically, these movies dope. EDIT: Want to clarify, I don't blame PJ entirely for the Hobbit turning out not great. I put the blame much MUCH more so on studio meddling. EDIT 2: People keep bringing up that Phantom Menace has practical effects, which yes. But that's one movie of three and again, there is more complete CG as a whole in the prequel trilogy and it has aged poorly. Certainly far worse than the GENERALLY more blended with practical of the LOTR trilogy. It's a completely unrelated point.

I hope the wall of Minas Tirith is black for once, for instance. And that we meet Bombadil. And that Tolkien's original humor is intact (that was one of the few thigns I really had a problem with in PJ's movies, his humor). Still, that "On your left" was the essence of what Tolkien himself called "eucatastrophe" in his essay "On Fairy Stories": " the good catastrophe, the sudden joyous “turn” (...) It does not deny the existence of dyscatastrophe, of sorrow and failure: the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of deliverance; it denies (in the face of much evidence, if you will) universal final defeat (...) it can give to child or man that hears it, when the “turn” comes, a catch of the breath, a beat and lifting of the heart, near to (or indeed accompanied by) tears." And since, not only I became a fan of Tolkien (have all books and read most up to this point) but these movies as well. Also!! I remember hearing the news, as a 20-y-o fan of the books (which I'd read and fallen in love with at 15), that a film adaptation would be attempted. Before PJ, we only had Bakshi, and LotR was widely considered to be unfilmable. The most successful/popular fantasy movie back then was Willow. I remember getting gossip from acquaintances who knew someone who was an extra over in New Zeeland. We (book nerds) were all SO excited years in advance, and back then that wasn't really a thing. I made my entire family read the books the year before Fellowship was released (literally made them, they put up a fight), and then took them all to see it opening night. And it was fucking magical. I remember tearing up just at hearing the music, and seeing the landscapes. The intro gave me goose bumps. I even still remember the car ride home and everybody's opinions. And yes, I still rewatch them on occasion, and the only things I'm kind of over are the modern jokes, like skateboarding Legolas. I resent the few moments where our world was allowed to intrude into Middle-Earth. But aside from that... Still magical.

You mentioned at the end that the closest fantasy series we've had in terms of being a cultural cornerstone is Harry Potter, until JK went full JK. I'd argue Game of Thrones was even more on track to becoming LOTR-like in status. It had so much going for it, and a lot were things you mentioned were crucial in LOTR being so successful. It prioritized practical over CG effects, with the exception of things like the dragons. The performances were all fantastic casting and for book readers, it is hard to not have the actor in mind when reading about the major characters. Though it is funny to say now, the first few seasons really showed they cared about the books, they were faithful when it was crucial, and the things they added were pretty well liked even by book fans. It succeeded in bringing the major audience to the screen, people who weren't just fans of the genre. It was the ultimate water cooler show, the thing you would talk about at the office. But then, like how the Middle-Earth franchise fell because it lost it's love for the series, GOT became the butt of all jokes when it stopped caring about the characters and writing. CGI and budget became a bigger emphasis, the characters were so far removed from their book counterparts they were unrecognizable from their earlier selves, and the core themes and ideas of the books were abandoned. GOT would've become the next LOTR, and it choked so hard at the end that no one really talks about it anymore, and if they do it's about how bad it screwed up

Um, when exactly Middle-Earth franchise "fell"? Lord of the Rings is cultural icon and staple of classical english literature in a way that GOT or Song and Ice and Fire can never hope to be, even if they someday will be finished. People have made entire academic careers analyzing Tolkien's languages, calendars, mythology or religion. There is a reason why people can be professional Tolkien scholars but not Rowling or Martin scholars.

Something else that made these movies great is looking at how they handled cutting stuff out from the book or adding things that weren't in them. Even when those scenes occurred, it was all still treated with care. For example, there are a lot of songs in the book that the characters sing. Some of them made it into the movies and others didn't. One unique case is the song Pippin sings to Boromir's father, entitled "The Edge of Night." Parts of this song were actually from a poem that Tolkien wrote in the books that unfortunately didn't get featured in its entirety in the movies. However, bits and pieces of the poem were added into new original songs, like "The Edge of Night." Not only that, but Pippin's actor, Billy Boyd, played a hand in composing the song's melody, which reinforces how much of a passion project this was for practically everyone involved with the making of these movies. P.S. Everything I have mentioned here is stuff that was mostly brought to my attention by my parents, who grew up reading the Lord of the Rings books when they were kids and got me to do the same. I also fact checked the making of "The Edge of Night" as best I could, but I'm sure I still either missed some important details or mixed up the context of others. Either way, I hope I have said enough to provide people who watch this video and like/love the movies discussed here to at least provide a nice topic of conversation for other people.

Τhe special effects breakthrough they had, was the fact that they developed the software named "massive" to generate "agents", digital armies that each agent behaved differently. what they had noticed in testing, was that some agents during the cgi battles, run for the hills to save their lives and the whole battle felt realistic. that's why the battles with the orcs etc in the lord of the rings felt so realistic. they blended massive with the practical effects and the real actors.

I rewatched the series after watching this video and I fully agree. While the CGI effects are dated, both the technical quality and the artistry behind them is at such a high level that in the moment you still believe in what you're showing. At no point did I get taken out of the experience because of a CG shot or character, my eyes still widen when I see the enormous armies of orcs, I still feel awe when the Balrog roars at the fellowship, I still feel dread when the Nazgul ride in on their fell beasts. The effects in this movie are believable moreso than 1:1 realistic. Everything feels like an actual part of the world and so you never get taken out of the experience, it really is phenomenal. These movies are lightning in a bottle and I think it'll be a long time before we see anything come close to touching them.

What a coincidence. I am in the midst of a LOTR extended edition rewatch. I appreciate and love these movies even more now than I did when they came out. What truly great film making! The Hobbit films just make me sad. What a perfect cast, crew, design team...and the studio really fumbled what could have been a delightful film (singular film). I would have been so interested to see Guillermo del Toros version. Alas, perhaps in an alternate timeline....

As a LoTR fan, I was so happy when I saw the first movie in the theaters. It's an experience I'll never forget and I knew I'd be back to see the next one as soon as it came out. I ended up seeing the first one six times dragging everyone I could to it and none of them were disappointed. Also, I don't usually get very emotional watching movies but something about the scene in the third movie where Aragorn says "My friends, you bow to no one" gets me choked up every time.

I feel like you’re really missing out if you don’t also look at Taika Watiti’s earlier work because he’s style doesn’t really change for Ragnorak, it gets a bigger scale and the restraint of the marvel universe

Not sure if someone else mentioned this, but when Viggo Mortensen was called to fill in for the role of Aragorn, he was doubtful about it. Then his son asked him about what was that call about, so Viggo told him they wanted him to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Pretty much his son packed all Viggo's stuff and threw him inside the plane to fly to New Zealand.

Every single person attached with the LOTR series put their heart, soul, blood and sweat into it. From the biggest name to that one person I saw who was responsible of warning the crew of airplanes passing by.. all of them wanted it to be perfect. Also, the level of authenticity and attention to detail is just out of this world.

I don't remember my initial thoughts about the LotR movies. Because I was *6* when I watched them the first time. Both of my parents where Tolkien fans and while my mother now admits that it might have been to early to watch them (the Nazguls *terrified* me and my brother), I'm glad she did. Otherwise I wouldn't be the person I am today. It sparked my love of fantasy and of reading books. It set into my mind the dream of one day becoming an author, something which still feels distant but I still have some hope that I will one day manage it. Tolkien is the only person I have ever called my idol, and I am forever thankful to Peter J and his crew for such a skillful adaption to his work.

I think the quality of the visual effects of LotR should not be underestimated. Those movies have come to be the gold standard for what an Orc, a Rohan rider, a soldier of Gondor or of the haradrim, an Uruk-hai, a Nazgul, his flying beast, a Balrog, Sauron or Gollum should look like. When video games and other LotR products after the PJ movies show any of these they tend to mimic what they look like in these movies. It didn't have to be that way, the books give enough material and room for interpretation to show them differently or to show things not shown in the movies but this rarely happens. I recall for example, though I read the books over a decade ago, that there are descriptions of some of the orcs that are not represented in these movies. I remember a black one with long arms, an archer who murders his companion while Frodo and Sam hide behind some rock. I've never seen an orc like it. The reason Jacksons movies have become so visually influential is because their visuals work. A lot of work went into it as well to make all design of the architecture, armor and weaponry distinct and fitting for each race.

Unpopular opinion: The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Jurassic Park are on my short list of movies that I feel should get big-budget overhauls on their CG in rereleases every ~20 years until we truly plateau. Movies that are breathtaking, amazing experiences, always fit for the big screen, should get the chance to shine for a new generation. ... Assuming we still have theaters in the future. :/

While nobody will say The Hobbit trilogy is as good as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it has grown on me over the years. I think PJ did a pretty sensitive job when it came to connecting the two stories together (the final scene of the final Hobbit film, mirrors the first scene in LotR - but from a different perspective). And also note that The Hobbit trilogy represented the very last films of Ian Holm (Bilbo) and Christopher Lee (Saruman), before they died. I think we were very lucky, ultimately, to have them revisit those roles one last time. As of 2022 (10 years after the 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey') I have a lot more sympathy for the Hobbit trilogy now. There are a lot of very enjoyable moments in those films, and Martin Freeman's performance as Bilbo is fantastic. It was also great to see Galadriel in a more active and powerful role - really showing what she could do. All in all... I think that after the Amazon LotR series comes out, a lot more people might be saying, "I miss Peter Jackson, including the Hobbit films..."

Regarding The Hobbit, wasn’t Jackson bought in as an emergency and had like limited time to complete the thing? I’m sure it was originally meant to be done by Guillermo Del Toro but I could be wrong 😊

From what I remember, you're right. PJ wasn't supposed to direct, but a few other directors fell through. And I think Del Toro left the project after a significant amount of pre-production.

I like your comment regarding how the budget for the trilogy was “big” when Jackson would joke about how small the budget was. Kind of funny how the entire trilogy was made for well under $300 million and then a decade later it cost that much just to make the first hobbit film.

Great review of the LOTR film Trilogy. I am also very partial to the animated versions (especially the Fellowship-Two Towers with Ralph Bakshi which you can tell greatly influenced Perter Jackson). The Hobbit had director changes (Guillermo Del Toro was involved and some point early on with a two movie pitch). Studio changes fraught with financial issues that you mentioned along with tons of studio manipulation and ridiculous changes. There was also a labor strike in New Zealand causing delays and financial woes. Peter Jackson only wanted to be a producer but instead had it thrown in his lap with months of prep time versus the years of prep time he had for the LOTR films. I'm sure there's even more that I am unaware. Whereas the LOTR films were a perfect storm of awesome the Hobbit was a perfect storm of everything that could possibly go wrong. Timing also impacted how the music was used (like you mentioned) and Howard Shore had to re-use more content than I;m sure he really wanted to. So much stuff working against the arrival of the Hobbit live action movies.

I will bring this up in defense of the hobbit. A lot of people forget that it was originally a duolagy that was going to be called "There" and " Back Again" It was going to be made by the masterclass Guillermo Del Toro who was in pre production for as long as the original LoTR trilogy. But when the Tolkien family sued the studio it got put on hold for 2 or 3 years which made Del Toro drop out because he wanted to realize his pacific rim movie. The studio then begged for Peter Jackson to take over who ended up throwing out most of Del Toros work to do it his way and the studio very stupidly didn't give him a lot of time.

I still have hope that one day PJ will do The Silmarillion. Just, when and only when he wants to. I feel like the reason the hobbit wasn’t what it could have been is because the studio “coerced” PJ into making the Hobbit. He didn’t put the love and care into it as he did LOTR and it shows.

I think the thing that makes The Hobbit feel "phoned in" from Jackson's perspective is because of massive time constraints. He couldn't obsess over it like he could with Lord of the Rings and sadly it shows. I'd have loved to see what Jackson could've done with it, had he had given the same means as there were with LOTR.
