It seems to be a common thing, for young reactors to not understand King Theoden and his words/actions. They miss that Theoden is in a losing situation regardless of what he does, so his best response is to have some self-dignity and to go out fighting. His job as king is to do his best to protect his people, but in the face of death to then give the some dignity. Peter Jackson added the contingent of Elves showing up to give the battle at Helm's Deep more flash, but in the books Theoden is clearly in a hopeless situation. That is why Theoden needed a savior (Gandalf). The point is that humans can find themselves in a losing situation and only the supernatural can save them. Tolkien likely thought this on the battle grounds of WWI.

Elrond actually has a super sad story, and while I do think the movies did him a little dirty (adore the movies anyway), his history makes this characterization make a lot of sense. He and his twin brother were the sons of a human and elf pairing, making them half-elven. Both his parents effectively "died" while they were very young. His adoptive father figure was also killed a while later. As a half elf, he and his brother had the choice to live as a mortal human or an immortal elf, and his brother chose to live as a human, so he lost his brother to death as well. Elrond fell in love and got married, and after having twin sons of his own and also Arwen, his wife was kidnapped and tortured by orcs. While they were able to rescue her, she was hurt beyond healing, and chose to go to the undying lands, leaving Elrond behind until he chooses to go himself. So his desire to not also lose his daughter, is completely understandable. His "don't you love me as well?" is so heartbreaking. I do still think he's in the wrong, but it's so relatable. I adore him and think that Hugo Weaving did a great job with his portrayal.

Elrond's story is super cool. While his brother did die as human, that line eventually lead to Aragorn. Elrond is Aragorn's great--great-...-great-uncle :)

And it's also because Elves know for a fact that they will see each other again in Valinor when they die. Humans, however have a completely different afterlife that only Eru knows where. So while Elrond will see his wife again, he will never see his brother or Arwen ever again.

If the Fellowship was able to hear Saruman from the mountain of Caradhras, the Uruk-Hai would be able to hear Saruman from up a balcony. Saruman's also a wizard, so it's not that hard to accept that he's using magic so that everyone could hear his voice.

6:55 Wormtongue probably shed a tear out of regret, realizing that literally everyone he knew was going to die, including Eowyn, whom he had been crushing on for years. He was greedy for power, but probably not a fan of the total genocide of his people. Sauruman has a magic voice that can manipulate people, especially someone already craving power like Wormtongue. Even so, Wormtongue may have had a brief moment of clarity on just how much he effed up. Least that's one interpretation. This scene isn't in the books anyways as far as I can remember.

I believe it was the fans on set blowing into his face that made the actor's eyes watery, but it's a cool detail because it can be interpreted so many ways. Considering his later behaviour, I'm not sure he's upset about those people dying, I'd say it's awe that's shocking him, but maybe he had a brief moment of concern!

That's why Elrond was so shocked when Merry and Pippin popped out from behind the pillars at his counsel. The second thing is being dead-eye accurate at throwing projectiles. If any creature spotted even a Hobbit child bend down for a stone, it high tailed outta there!

I hope Carianna eventually gets to catch up on these because I get the feeling she'd love Eowyn, especially in the 3rd movie. People who've seen the movies know the scene I'm talking about Also I think the battle scenes in this series hit harder if you understand how much the trench war in WWI (which was one of the most utterly horrific periods in western history) impacted Tolkien. He lost some of his friends - one of whom he didn't even know had died until he received a letter after the fact. While he wasn't big on 1:1 allegory you can tell that the war and the struggle to maintain hope in a hopeless situation influenced him a great deal. I think that's part of what makes the story so timeless in how it resonates with people, even those who don't share Tolkien's religious background. It was conceived by someone who experienced the absolute worst life had to offer yet still managed to find a sliver hope amdist it anyway. Stories that preach at you to be happy and hopeful without acknowledging the real suffering of life just come across as cheap, but LOTR is honest about the fact that suffering exists and is terrible, so the fight to find to hope actually feels more genuine

the comment about Sam being Frodo's gardener reminded me of an interesting historical tidbit: Royal gardeners were often people to be feared, not only were they in excellent health due to the nature of their work but they were trusted with blades and other tools that are effectively weapons around the royal family and in some cases were even pulling double duty as bodyguards and assassins.

As you may know, Tolkien was a very religious man. LOTR includes a lot of theology, dressed up as a story. Peter Jackson changed the story around from the books, but PJ still included much thought from Tolkien. To Tolkien words matter (he was a professor of language, and for a time one of the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary), and Tolkien made his language beautiful, and PJ kept some of that too. Encourage you to not skip over the both the beauty of the language and deeper meaning embedded in the story.

(I'm sure you know this, but adding context) more specifically he is descended from elronds brother. elrond and his brother are half elven and half man, so they could choose a mortal or immortal life. his brother chose a mortal life and founded a line that (after a long long time) led to aragorn. elrond remained immortal, but his children have the same choice in front of them. it helps explain why he wants arwen to choose immortality imo. he already lost his brother, then his wife. no parent wants to bury their child.

The Breaking of the World in LotR was the separation of the mortal realms (Middle Earth) from the Undying Lands of Valinor, where most elves and the godlike Valar live. (Gandalf and Sauron are tier b to the Valar's tier a) The Rings of Power show will visit this eventually. In both LotR and WoT, though, the Breaking was a tragic cataclysm caused by arrogant men that set civilization back many years.
@TheDanEdwards

WoT clearly (and admittedly) too much from LOTR. And in the case of LOTR, the 2nd Age end did not come about just because of men but because of the Elves too (and the Dwarves and the rest of the inhabitants of Arda.) Tolkien clearly was drawing from Plato's Atlantis myth, but also pulling in themes from the book of Genesis.
@TyrionTrakand
8 ай бұрын
@@TheDanEdwards I prefer to think of WoT as paying homage to LotR rather than ripping off from it. Spoilers for later seasons of Rings of Power | Yes, but the Breaking of Arda happened well before the end of the 2nd Age, when the Valar surrendered power to Eru Illuvitar to separate Valinor from the rest of Arda and destroy Numenor as punishment for tryng to conquer Valinor. I was just trying to draw parallels between Lews Therin and Ar-Pharazon, last king of Numenor. And yes, Middle Earth's 2nd Age ended when the Elves and the survivors of Numenor's downfall united to defeat Sauron, while WoT's 2nd Age ended with the Breaking of the World specifically.

0:20 Hello there, Faramir! Just think about it - Faramir is an Ithilien Ranger of Gondor, the other branch of the same Numenorean Ranger tradition that Aragorn shares in as a Dunedain Ranger of the North! They're basically "long lost cousins", professional rank-wise - in the same organization! And the Ithilien Rangers have been honing their skills for the last 2000 years by being the front lines of the ongoing battles against evil forces in Mordor! No reason to think Faramir's skills as a Ranger here are any less than Aragorn's when tracking the Hobbits across Rohan - that is, the very peak of Rangerly skill and ability! Boromir was perhaps the better Warrior of the two brothers, but Faramir was definitely the better Ranger, and he showed it! Just musing a bit on Faramir's professional heritage is all lol. 🤓

That is to say, yeah, pretty good accuracy indeed, they probably are just targeting the riders, not the Olyphants, here - it's in their best interests tactically (no wasted resources taking them down) and strategically (a bunch of wild angry hungry Olyphants rampaging through enemy territory raising hell is such a lovely thought hehehe). Why kill them? Set them free to cause what havoc they can - the Rangers are skilled enough to avoid them, perhaps even "spoof" and steer them a bit - not saying allies, but just throwing a wrench in the Enemy's works). Man, I'm losing it in nergasms here hehehe

Here’s the thing about elves. God’s children are elves and men, but they have a different fate. Elves are tied to the material world. They live forever and if killed their souls stay in the world and go to an Angel of death who has a home on the west where everything lives forever and they can be given new bodies. So they basically have a respawn point and can never truly die and leave the world. God made elves the fairest, the wisest, the most graceful and bound them to creation forever. The gift God have man is they’re both material and spiritual, they get to die and their souls leave material creation and presumably go to God but no one knows for sure what happens after death. So for Elrond, if his daughter chooses to become mortal and die like a human, the two will never meet again until after the end of the world.

He tells Frodo that if the Enemy's weapon lay on the ground in front of him, he would not pick it up. when he finds out that Frodo has the Ring, he passes the temptation in a few moments.
