Every night, I live and die Feel the party to my bones Watch the wasters blow the speakers Spill my guts beneath the outdoor light It's just another graceless night I hate the headlines and the weather I'm nineteen and I'm on fire But when we're dancing I'm alright It's just another graceless night Are you lost enough? Have another drink, get lost in us This is how we get notorious, oh 'Cause I don't know If they keep tellin' me where to go I'll blow my brains out to the radio, oh All of the things we're taking 'Cause we are young and we're ashamed Send us to perfect places All of our heroes fading Now I can't stand to be alone Let's go to perfect places Every night, I live and die Meet somebody, take 'em home Let's kiss and then take off our clothes It's just another graceless night, 'cause All of the things we're taking 'Cause we are young and we're ashamed Send us to perfect places All of our heroes fading Now I can't stand to be alone Let's go to perfect places All the nights spent off our faces Trying to find these perfect places What the fuck are perfect places anyway? All the nights spent off our faces Trying to find these perfect places What the fuck are perfect places anyway? All the nights spent off our faces Trying to find these perfect places What the fuck are perfect places anyway?

I think the music video is about the painting Orphelia, that depicts a woman who has lived a life awaiting happiness. She has fallen into a river from a tree overhanging it, while gathering flowers. She lies in the water singing songs, as if unaware of her danger ("incapable of her own distress"). Her clothes, trapping air, have allowed her to temporarily stay afloat ("Her clothes spread wide, / And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up."). But eventually, "her garments, heavy with their drink, / Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay" down "to muddy death."

I understand where you're coming from, based on a few water scenes that resemble the painting, but Ophelia is actually a character from Shakespeare's Hamlet, which the painting is based on. Ophelia kills herself by drowning because Hamlet appears to not love her anymore. "She drowned herself in her own defense." To me, this video seems happier than that. Lorde is revelling in her perfect places, surrounded by natural beauty.
@VinkPepijn
7 жыл бұрын
You mean Hamlet's Ophelia?
@brandonday7896
7 жыл бұрын
ramona good point but You don't "blow your brains out to the radio" when you're happy. She's going to all these different places and trying all of these differnt things but still not finding happiness. In the end she asks "What the fuck [Sic] are perfect places, anyway?". She also calls the night "graceless" a technical theological term basically meaning "God forsaken". So it seems like the lyrics might support the Ophelia interpretation,especially the album deals a lot with her break up and Ophelia kills herself after Hamlet rejects her (and kills her father by accident).

I remember when I was 20 this song was like a hymn to me, like I just felt so tired to keep looking for "perfect" places, drinking, parting, pleasing people just in hope they will stay, and this song always cheered me up as yeah fuck all that and now 25+ I just sit and cry rivers as fuck there were perfect places when you are full of joy, youngness and carefree and now everything is just dull and I hate it hate what everyone doing their "grown up" stuff, busy with schedules and ultimately does not want to speak about like feelings, dreams, silly but meaningful things now all I want is a glimpse of perfect places and not to be alone Lorde is genius and Melodrama is the most holding by time album I heard

I'm turning 18 in 10minutes and I'm listening to all of Lorde's songs to kiss my childhood goodbye EDIT: It's October 16th, my birthday again. I turn 20 today. It's so surreal to officially no longer be a teen despite never even having experienced many "teenage" things. I graduated high school, and started college. I realized I was going to be friends with my old friends forever (they're so amazing) but at the same time feel like I won't ever make friends as good again. I was 19 and on fire (as one commenter pointer out!) and I thought about giving an update last year too but I didn't end up doing so. Honestly adulthood, even though I experienced so little of it as a college student, is tough. I feel constantly lost in regard to my classes, my career, my hopes, and myself. Every year I seem to get the birthday blues because there's this huge expectation for you to be happy, that you know you're disappointing the important people in your life when you aren't. Yet, the best part of making this comment is that fact that every once in a while, someone, maybe even in the middle of July, would wish me happy birthday. And that would make me happy. Because an internet stranger took the effort, had the intention, to want me to be a little bit happier, and I was. So thank you, everyone who wished me happy birthday. Oh look at that, it's perfectly 12am on 10/17 so it's no longer my birthday. See you guys next year potentially? Best wishes to everyone, I hope your joys continue and your pains ease soon.

You know what's so cool about this? This is how us "normal" people dance. Not saying dancers are'nt or something but you see all these famous people dancing and you know they be faking it. The way lorde dances, yes she gets made of fun of for it, but that's legit how i dance in my room. When i feel like i'm alone and i have all the freedom to do whatever i want. I guess that's what adolescence is, feeling alone yet so free, doing as we please. I don't what point i was trying to make but this is what i had to say. She dances like she feels the music, it doesnt feel choreographed, it's sporadic and spontaneous and that is the embodiment of youth. I know she's an adult but her and her music will always be an embodiment of youth and adolescence.

@@bradmetzger8631 I can kinda see it. "Every night I live and die" so, every day she's born and dies a hero. But, "all of our hero's fading" meaning she's slowly dying, and she can't "Stand to be alone" as in all the heroes are already dead or are also fading. She's the only one in the music video, wishing for Perfect Places (Perhaps where nobody dies, especially heroes) but if heroes are fading, then Perfect Places don't exist. It's definitely contrived, but, oh well.

Presumably that's because you're about 20, Ivan M. It's really not all that special a song musically, compared to many songs from 1960s through to the end of the 90s and a few in 00s. But there's enough social media and millenial 'breathless unsmiling girl who replaced manic pixie girl' fans to give these chancers a very well paid fantasy that they're 'greats'. Because they truly are 'chancers' to mostly repackage what, say, Lana del Ray once did. It's not like singers are building something solid like a house. It relies on opinion - and mostly the opinion of phone and social media and virtue signalling obsessed skinny latte skinny brained 12-25 or whatever year olds. And I certainly don't mean all of them. I mean the self appointed 'hipsters'. See Being a dickhead's cool song.
