LORE - Bioshock Lore in a Minute!
Andrew Ryan, an extremely wealthy Russian immigrant, believed that one could own what one earned. To live in a society based on that belief, he turned towards creating Rapture. Construction on Rapture began in 1946 on the seafloor of the Atlantic Ocean and was designed to be entirely independent from surface societies. Scientists, artists, and doctors flocked to Rapture for the promise of a society without censor or moral restraints. Ryan considered these people the best examples of humankind. However, Ryan did not account for the workers who had built Rapture, thus creating a large divide between them and the elite.
Dr. Brigid Tenenbaum, a genetic scientist, discovered that sea slugs secreted a substance that behaved like stem cells, and with it, she could manipulate DNA. Funded by smuggler Frank Fontaine, Dr. Tenenbaum was able to cure diseases and grant organisms powers they called this ADAM. Soon after, she made another breakthrough: if the slug was implanted into a host, it would produce nearly 30 times the amount of ADAM. Only one test subject seemed to yield results - young girls. Fontaine would then set up the Little Sister's Orphanage which doubled as a ADAM factory.
Fontaine Futuristics began to produce ADAM products, Gene Tonics and Plasmids, and sold them to the populace. A genetic arms race broke out as Ryan attempted to arrest Fontaine, but Fontaine faked his own death. Ryan assumes control of Fontaine Futuristics and creates Ryan Industries. Returning under the moniker, Atlas, Fontaine wages guerrilla warfare, thus sparking a large-scale civil war in Rapture.
