Human Hope and Wild Desire: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Hollywood
“These lights, this brightness, these clusters of human hope, of wild desire-I shall take these lights in my fingers. I shall make them bright, and whether they shine or not, it is in these fingers that they shall succeed or fail.” ―The Love of the Last Tycoon
About the Series:
We are the stories we tell ourselves. Is a city the same? Here at the Philosophical Research Society, we think it is, and Los Angeles is a city that has a plethora of stories to tell. In fact, Los Angeles has been the center of storytelling for centuries now, so its stories are different than other cities’ in kind if not in number. Some stories are small and shallow and fade quickly; others are large and deep and become myth. In this ten-week series, President Greg Salyer, Ph.D. leads us through the mythical dimensions of the City of Angels.
