Kalash people is the smallest ethnic group in Pakistan. There are barely 4,000 persons spread over 3 remote valleys in the Northwest of the country in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
Of uncertain origin, it is one of the oldest human groups in Asia. Their secular isolation has allowed them to maintain their ancient language, culture, and animist-influenced religion.
Today they constitute one of those ethnic groups in danger of losing their distinctive character due to the thrust of modernity. And due to the political and religious interests that try to impose the islamic religion in Pakistan. Especially due to the freedoms that women maintain within Kalash society. Something that collides head-on with the most rigid version of the prevailing islam in the country.
One of the best moments to meet the Kalash is to do it during the celebration of one of their festivals. Such as Chilam Joshi, the Spring Festival, which I show you here.
