This was an incredible adventure in this old cemetery. I had no idea how large this place would turn out to be, or how much history was hidden within! Also to note on this adventure my GoPro had a massive crash. It only did it once, and hasn’t done it since, so I hope it wasn’t a sign of things to come. Super Interesting Robert! I've been on hunts in cemeteries looking for relatives. My Grandfather found his Great Grandfathers and G Grandmothers graves, which were just field stone. So he had a granite marker made. He made the positive identification through the church records. And it was a church he had started. He'd be my GGG Grandfather born in Ireland in 1772 and died 1860. He came here through Philadelphia in 1815. Thanks Kindly! Loved it! DaveyJO in Pa. p.s. I'll send a pic of the new stone on your email Robert. My Grandfather had it made in the 1950s

Due to the pandemic and social distancing this past summer I visited several old cemeteries looking for relatives and people of history. It was a good excuse to ride my motorcycle and explore places I normally would not visit. I found that eating lunch in old cemeteries talking to the dead to be very peaceful. Found grandparents, aunts uncles and cousins. Many early Minnesota pioneers including the mass graves of the Dakota Uprising and the forest fire of 1918. Plan to search again the summer of 2021. When I was attending collage I had a job with a green house and one of my jobs was placing flowers on graves in local cemeteries. Love the job, no one bothered me, watched deer and fox everyday.

Sometimes these places are a lot safer letting nature disguise them. I know of too many instances where cemeteries were cleaned up and attention brought to the effort. Next thing you know, vandals not only destroyed the markers, but actually opened some graves and scatter the remains. I was with a group back in the 90's touring one such cemetery and I discovered a skull that had been removed from an opened grave and just thrown up against a tree. It was heartbreaking, disturbing and I can't tell you how angry we all were once we got past the initial shock.

There was an old cemetery outside of Tullahoma TN. Alot of the markers were gone but you could see clearly rows of graves that had sunken. One grave had an iron waist high fence. It had an obelisk maybe 5ft tall engraved with a pentagram and Circle No 13 Witches Coven along with some Latin. The woman had died in the early 1920s. We used to drink beer back there in the 80s. I went back a few years ago and it had been vandalized and the obelisk smashed. I wish I had taken pictures back then. In 10 or 20 more years it will be lost.

Do you tend your relatives burial plots in another state or country? People do eventually die out especially when people were dying so much younger than they do today. It doesn't mean that people have forgotten. Maybe they're too old or sick or in a nursing home. Why would someone travel thousands of miles to tend the grave of a relative when they aren't even there, just their bones and a box. All a plot is, is a reminder and a guilt trip, no one is HOME! Pray at home or in church for god's sake. They aren't coming back.

The church was known first as the "Mulberry Grove Meeting House," and later, for a short time, "New Hope," before being named Mount Olive. The Mulberry Grove Meeting House is where the Columbus Baptist Association was organized. The persons identified in Barfield as associated with this church and buried in its cemetery are evidently European-American; this is evidently not the same as the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery located at 5434 Georgia Highway 315 in Fortson, the burials in which are predominantly African-American.

Friends, be of good cheer in knowing that our Savior, Jesus Christ, is ready to be with us in all the times of life....joy, loss, blessing, pain, success, failure and everything in between. The Scriptures encourage us: “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (Psalm 62 : 8). This confident statement did not occur in a time of ease. David wrote these words while surrounded by enemies (vv. 3-4). Still, he waited quietly before God (vv. 1, 5) reminding us that God’s unfailing love (v. 12) is greater than any of the times of struggle we may face. In every event, we have this confidence: Our God stands with us, and He is more than adequate to carry us through all of life’s moments. When the times of life threaten to overwhelm us, His help will be right on time. We’re so grateful that our Lord is always and will always be faithful to us. Begin your close and personal relationship with the very One whom knew you, and loved you before the creation of this world by first understanding that you are a sinner in need of our Savior. I invite you to receive our Creator THIS VERY MOMENT by first acknowledging that you are a sinner in need of our Savior. Welcome Abba YHWH (Father God) through Yeshua (Jesus the Christ) into your life. Receive grace by believing in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross, His death, burial and resurrection. Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior whom died on the cross for the sins of ALL human-kind, arose in the 3rd day and currently sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. You will then be justified in salvation and forever blessed with His abundant love by the Holy Spirit! May God bless you in the Glorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and our Savior.❤❤❤

I have done the same thing. My then fiance and I came across a head stone. We went to check it out. We barely could make it out but after cleaning it we saw the date of death was 1668. It was so sad because this entire cemetery was forgotten. This was in north Jersey. These people were God's children- forgotten but not forgotten by God.

I love your videos. I have met a lot of old farmers and cowboys here in North Central Texas over the past 30 years of metal detecting. When they found out I love history, I have had them walk me across river beds and way out in the middle of nowhere to show me unmarked Graves, usually either cowboys or settlers caught up in Comanche raids and killed. No one knew their families so they were given a good Christian burial as the old guys called it and their Graves were usually marked with a plain flat stone stood up. I wonder how many Graves lay totally unmarked.

When you go back, you need to take some of that headstone cleaning spray. You spray it on, and let the rain do the cleaning. I saw it on another KZitem channel. It would make that headstone a lot more legible.

Pretty sure the image on engraved on the front of the headstone at 4:00 is a Calla Lily, although it was tough to get a good look at it. In general, a Lily stands for purity, but a Calla Lily in particular often indicates that the deceased was married. Wonderful video!

So, I got curious, and looked up Dr. Johnson's info, and found out he had 6 children, the youngest being Wincy Ann Johnson Shelton (1822-1916). Her info says that her spouse was Jeremiah Freeman "Free" Shelton (1821-1904). Would that indicate that Wincy married a freed slave?

Born 1737, died 1872, that would make her 135, are you sure? Especially for that time period, people didn't normally live past their 30's and 40's. Of course there are always exceptions but 135 would be EXCEPTIONAL to say a tad unbelievable.

In Birmingham Alabama a local historian is documenting old cemeteries. He found a very interesting document concerning a very large cemetery in what was considered outside the city limits. It had over 600 graves, he found only one document and it showed it's exact location. No other mention of what happened to the graves. City officials would not comment, there is a very large structure owned by the city on that location. The structure? Legion Field football stadium.

@@donniebrown2896 I saw that there was a 315 grave pioneer cemetery in McLendon Park probably under the soccer field. Both white and African American graves. McClendon own the property, sold it to the city & he was either mayor or on the city council... Headstones removed & they just built over it. In Santa Barbara, California the city wanted to build a park. They bought a cemetery, threw all the headstones in a local canyon & now it's a park...

There is a solution called D2 that you can use to clean the stone. It works wonders! Makes all the biological stuff a thing of the past. Your friend might be interested in using it on this stone. Since it is so worn, I would just spray it and leave it. It works that well. Might be able to see the inscription a bit better.

Go online to Find-A-Grave.com, type in the last name of the deceased or of the surname of the family, and the county (typed out completely), along with the state (typed out completely,) and United States of America fu;;y typed out. Hopefully, someone would have entered the burials in that cemetery, into FindAGrave. If there is no entry for that cemetery, perhaps you might like to enter all the burials you have found there. It would be helpful to others..

If you are interested in seeing old graveyards, PLEASE READ THIS.So many old graves are losing the ability to read what is / was on the gravestone. It would be really great if we could come together to have small plaques made for each of them in order to help identify whose grave it is. I think whoever owns / manages the grave should have records on who is in each grave. I am sure some graves may be so old that there is no way to find out. However it would help preserve the info we can read and or find out about each grave, for future generations. I have no idea on the cost it would take to have a small plaque made. However if we came together as a community, I am sure donations and fundraisers could help cover the cost. Maybe starting with the older graves and posting info on where families could have plaques made for their loved ones, whom they visit. It's only a good idea if many people help to come together to make it happen.
