You know why I love the internet? I woke up this morning thinking about a TV show I used to watch a decade ago. That show was a little complicated, and I wondered what stuff I missed when I watched it. I search for an explained video, and here it is. Now I got my entertainment for the next little while sorted out. Thanks, my guy, you have made my day,.

Just did this the past month. I re-watched the entire series, from the first episode all the way to the last. I'm 28, I was born in 1996, so I was around 7 when Lost started airing. I remembered how after a long week of baseball practice, and softball practice for my sister, we would watch it with our dad religiously each week when the new episode came out. We were so hooked, and it became something that the 3 of us really looked forward to every Wednesday (?) night. I remembered that we eventually started slowly losing interest and ultimately not watching it anymore, probably around season 2/3. I asked my dad why last month, and he said that it just got kind of confusing and we couldn't keep track of what was going on, and when he said that, I kind of remembered the frequent time jumps/changes (I didn't know what they were when I was younger, I just remember the sound before a flashback would play and such, I only found out what they were upon re-watching it this past month). And it made sense, if my dad as an adult back then didn't understand it, then I definitely wasn't going to understand it, only being 7/8 years old. So I decided to re-watch it all on Hulu, as I mentioned, and it was awesome!! Especially getting to see how it progressed and ended, since we fell off around season 3. But I was able to understand it the more I watched it, and had a pretty decent grasp of the show. But seeing the whole thing as an adult, and seeing the ending, it left me with more questions than answers, honestly!!! I feel like I understand it, but not quite, so as you said, the fact that someone is still making content about it in 2023 is awesome. Just goes to show how many people watched it and how wild/confusing the whole thing was!! Lol!!

Lost is literally one of the best shows ever made. To me, this show wasn't about explaining all of the unexplained mysteries of everything but the code moral of the show was 'To Let Go'.. not all mysteries in life can and will ever be explained. And the ending was controversial b/c of everyones different belief on the after life. But to me, it was about being able to connect with someone you lost in your life and everyone important to you. If you compare the interacting between the characters from the first pilot eps to the very last few, it shows how all walks of life can all respect, love, and care for one another if we learn to LET GO of all the small petty shit we're programmed to think. If we all just try to LET GO of our pasts and/or what we think we know, the world would be a better place. Everything in between was just a fun wild crazy ride full of all different kinds of emotions.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
Жыл бұрын
That’s an absolutely fair way to view the show but there are those of us in the fanbase that found the mystery element just as compelling as the character stuff. To me, the mythology was the hook, and the mysteries absolutely mattered to the story as much as each character arc and relationship. I know it’s tempting to handwave away these explanations as not being as important as the emotional ride because then we don’t have to do any heavy lifting in working through the kinks of the plot. However, I’d argue that it was a symbiotic relationship between emotional revelation and mythological revelation. The show was as much about The Island as it was about the lives of Jack, Locke, Kate et al. Without each other, the story wouldn’t have been as compelling nor as rewarding.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I totally agree b/c i'm in that fanbase and your explanation videos are amazing. As a whole, yes i also agree that the mythology and everything else with it was just as important and interesting. I was explaining it from a smaller picture than the bigger one.

Considering the Smoke Monster clearly didn't anticipate becoming mortal after turning off the light, what exactly was his plan? He sinks the island, he stays a smoke monster, and just flies around forever doing exactly what he did on the island, just all over the world? What exactly is the point of that? He already knows what's out there. He's scanned people from all over the globe, through thousands of years. I never understood why he was so obsessed with leaving.

So my personal take is that the source, the light is the epicentre not only of earth, but of the universe… That the Big Bang happened and exploded outward from it, but the “core” of the universe, the centre of it, the source is and always at the core of our planet. That’s the only way I can make sense of how it’d be in our planet if it is indeed the core of all existence. I don’t know if you explained that aspect so much but that’s how I make sense of it. It’s a source of energy which created the universe, and the universe has been expanding around it ever since. It’s not to say that the earth is therefore the most important part of the whole universe, not at all, it’s totally possible that life which flowed out of it exists and extends far out into the far reaches of the universe. However it also explains why there is life on our planet and we haven’t discovered much of it elsewhere (so far…). It’s also set up this way simply because the show takes place on earth of course. But with the concept they added into the show I always took it to mean that the source was not just of all life and existence on our planet but in our entire universe. So the true source exists at the core of our planet, it’s just that the island is the only chasm out of which that light reaches the earth’s surface and is thus visible to human eyes. It’s there to show us there is meaning and some greater power, so in that way it is a force for its and our own good, but also because it represents so much power it is also there to challenge us not to take it for ourselves. Like you mentioned, its purpose is to exist and give us purpose and part of its purpose is in itself to risk its own and our own very existence. My way of thinking of it is that if the light had gone out for good and Jack hadn’t placed the cork back in, not only would the earth gradually turn back to its original firey form but after that eventually, whatever light left at the source in the core of earth would also start to flare to a point where the light would burst out until it encompasses the planet, out beyond it and it would start sucking everything into it like a black hole, creating the equivalent opposite of a big bang but simply extinguishing all life and existence. I say all this because to me just the idea that the light going out only means that the world would end doesn’t almost do it justice to what you’ve been stating in that it’s the core of all existence and life. To me it would mean that once the world is all burnt up, it would also extend to greater and beyond to the whole universe. Maybe you’ll touch on this in part 2 but to me it’s just something which I felt I needed to check is what you were meaning/hinting at in the video even if you didn’t explain it in the exact same way. My last question: When you talk about how the island itself is a sentient power… do you mean the physical island, the rock and ground - that specific area of earth formed around the only area where the source reaches the crust of our planet? Or do you mean the source itself (which is only accessed by humankind on the crust of our planet via the island)? Whenever you say “the island” is sentient to me I always take it you mean the power source at the core of the island is sentient. And to me that makes more sense than the physical island having a sentience of its own. I see it meaning that the island is just the direct physical land mass which is most directly affected by the source’s power and thus that power makes it seem like the land surrounding it… the island itself… is that source of power. So while yes the island does move, and the island moves through time, and it has many other unique properties, I see it more being that it just happens to be the mass of earth and land which directly surrounds this open direct through line to the source. It’s the only area on the planet where that power has reached the earth’s surface and so thus this area of land behaves in ways no other area on the planet behaves. So it’s not to say that the physical land mass is in any way special, it’s more that it’s special because it’s the only part of our planet where the source has reached the planet’s surface. It’s special for its proximity and direct connection to the source, and less that it’s special as a piece of land mass regardless of the source which it has a direct connection to. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this distinction in particular. I get the feeling we are on the same page but I wouldn’t want to assume, and if you mean something different I’d love to hear more of how you explain that. Great video, just wanted to share how I’m trying to make sense of it. Can’t wait for part 2!

First of all, this is an absolutely superb comment and I hope other people take the time to read it 👍 Really well thought out and reasoned! The way I look at the light in LOST on a universe-scale is in one of two ways: 1. The Source and its connected pockets of energy on Earth are essentially a microcosm of how the light functions across the universe. So, the light could be found in other galaxies where life exists. Imagine a Lamp Post-style map of the universe showing these energy pockets all over the infinite expanse of space. Ours might only be one access point of many. The Source is a fourth dimensional gateway to another plane of consciousness and we could argue that gateway might have access points on other planets too. 2. It’s exactly as you stated it. That the Earth is the focal point of The Source’s energy. I won’t rehash what you said here as you’ve already summed it up well. Both of these options are totally feasible to me. As for your question, I use The Island and The Source interchangeably as they are one and the same thing to me. But what I mean when I say “The Island is alive” is that there is something both physically and metaphysically alive about The Island. The only reason that The Source can function at all is because of the natural flow of water all over the landmass, with rivers feeding into the cave of light like bloodstreams. The Source is also referred to as “the heart of the island”, which is a very intentional reference to The Island being a living organism. And people frequently refer to it as having its own will: “The Island wants…”, “The Island needs…” etc. So, the way that I look at it is that the light pockets are the arteries and organs (for example, maybe The Swan site is the island’s kidneys, and The Orchid Site is its liver), while the river streams are the ventricles that create a circulatory system, and the island landmass is the main body itself. And they all function and work together as a whole. They cannot be separated. The light is where the actual “intelligence” or the will of The Island comes from, but it cannot do so without the other body parts, much like how our hearts and brains cannot function without skin, blood and bone. We wouldn’t say that our blood or bone has its own will per se, but we can say they are crucial parts of a living whole. And that’s how I view The Island. I hope that clarifies my view on it a bit more. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us🙏
@SamuelDJCox

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thank you so much! Yes, makes sense - it’s the brain/heart - its sentience is from the light. The light itself is the life force, but I hear what you’re saying, the island’s physical geographical qualities and its position over the light on the earth’s crust have a lightning in a bottle effect which allows this raw power to A) be visible to man in the only known location on the planet and B) allows this raw power to be regulated and not go too dim/go out or get too over powerful (via the water you mentioned). The last part I’ve always wanted to make sense of though is the island moving. I can’t remember if you’d covered it already but I’m always wondering whether as Eloise said “it’s always moving” means it’s constantly moving through the ocean like a ship or whether it moves ie teleports around the globe constantly at random intervals. I lean more toward the second because just the visual of a moving island-ship over the sea is too ridiculous and almost comic in my mind. That said, I still wonder how you make sense of the area between the base of the island which joins the bed of the earth’s crust… does the base of the island constantly split off from where it is based on the earth’s crust and then magically appear and “glue” itself to the earth’s crust in another location? And if so, how? I’m not expecting you to give the answer or even have a solid theory but that to me is the conundrum I’ve always been left with. To me that always seemed like a random complication that needn’t be added to their mythology unless it truly enriched their plot and could make some sense in a theoretical way… as fantastical as some elements of the show are they always tend to have a quasi-scientific explanation of how it “might” be possible so I wonder if they ever thought through the mechanics of that in some level or whether they just completely said “screw it” and let’s just make that a thing without at least attempting to think of a way people can theorise a semi-scientific possible answer or reason. Also, I can get why people on the island wouldn’t sense or see this movement as it moves, the same way we can’t feel the earth spinning nor see it turning from where we stand, but I always wonder if wherever it appears… if a ship was right next to a spot that the island suddenly moved to would it look like an island just magically appeared before their eyes? ie anyone outside it’s radius can see it appear and disappear but those on it can’t. Another thing, why does it move? In my mind, if the light is this constant power that charges all existence… to me it always strikes me as odd that the home of this power isn’t stable in a geographical sense. For something so strong it makes more sense in my instinct that it would be this ever present location from which all things moved around it… so the idea that it moves around the world in the same way the moon orbits the earth - with the earth’s core and the source at the centre and its gateway onto the earth’s crust “the island” moving around it feels kind of against the logic that this is the place from which all things came, if you get me? My way of thinking of it is that the source is this power within the core of the earth itself and its power reaches up to the earth’s crust and comes visible at the island. The reason it moves the island is more to do with the simple rotation of the earth and the way the earth orbits the sun. The idea that the laws of gravity and mass naturally cause things to flow in relation to each other. So it’s not that the source’s power is unstable, it’s more that it’s simply alive and powerful and its movement is a part of that aliveness. Why it moves is not so much the island “thinking” “oh let’s move over here, now over here” but more the raw energy spasming at moments and at the speed of light causing the land mass around the source to shift in three dimensional space. It’s not so much an erroneous spasm but more just a symptom of it being over powerful no different to the sun emitting solar flares now and then. And lastly, we know the island moved when Ben turned the wheel and it bathed everything in the light, but we don’t see this light constantly appearing throughout the series to indicate that it’s always moving. My best way to answer that is that one must assume it moves without the light being emitted every time and it only did that that specific time because of the mechanism used to force it to move, almost as if charging the island to use all its power emits the light, whereas if it is left to its own sentient force it needn’t emit all that energy and it just moves the land mass in a blink of an eye with an energy force so powerful and quick that it’s invisible to our human senses. Thanks again!

I have never played the games before, but just reading up about it now based on your comment. It is spookily similar, yes! Someone else mentioned overlap to a graphic novel with similar metaphysical elements too (the name escapes me right now). I know that the showrunners took inspiration from Stephen King's The Dark Tower series and the British cult TV series The Prisoner, plus some other sources such as Buffy and The X-Files, but to my knowledge they have never talked about Final Fantasy. The idea of the world having a soul that people are connected to is quite an old concept though, so it's hard to tell if they took inspiration from FF or if both LOST and FF took inspiration from the Greek mythology of Gaia.

If you've read my stuff, you know I follow more of a faith-grounded interpretation of events, even though my training is in hard science (35+ years as a pharmaceutical R&D chemist). Regardless of the fact that we interpret events in sometimes quite different ways, we reach some of the same conclusions. If I understand your interpretation of the cork, for instance, I believe we find agreement that corking the Island was more of a positive fulfillment than 'corking' or imprisonment of evil, though obviously the MIB was imprisoned on the Island due to the power of the light. I can't tell you how much I truly enjoyed this video! There is so much garbage out there about LOST. It's hard to find the good stuff. Your contribution is definitely top-shelf. The only reason I began writing about LOST (I was featured writer at both SL-Lost.com and Dark UFO in the final season) was that the only thing available online at the time (2004-2010) were 'recaps', which simply regurgitated what had happened the night before. This was so utterly inadequate! LOST begs for analysis, and that's what you are providing here, and what I attempted to provide in my six books on LOST. Even 12 years later, I have discovered nothing on television matching the depth of LOST. GoT and now HotD have attracted more viewers, but the shows lack LOST's depth. Something can definitely be said for GoT's development of ASoIaF's preoccupation with the marginalized, what I call in my GoT analyses 'The Sisterhood of the Damned'; the theme is deep and worthy of detailed analysis. Even so, LOST remains far richer in subtext and depth of expression than even ASoIaF ever attains--and certainly D&D pretty much destroyed GoT in the last two seasons. Here's hoping GRRM can rescue his creation in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. I very much look forward to future installments of your analysis, and I recommend the series to all. Nicely done! Pearson Moore 2022.

These videos are so good and I appreciate the effort you put into them. They also remind me of the endless discussions (Dark UFOs website anyone?) that were had during the torturous wait between seasons, between episodes, when the show would have a couple episodes and then take 2 weeks off, off a month for winter break and how 99% of the discussions turned out to be wrong 😂. It was so fun reading and discussing virtually everything and it’s now just as fun to have very well thought out ideas and explanations about what the show was all about in these videos.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I most likely read them then. Were some awesome theories on there that were way more elaborate and interesting than what the show presented but overall I was very happy with what the writers did and how it all ended. Feel sad for the people that didn’t enjoy the ending because it taints a great show to them but different strokes for different folks no one is right or wrong with how they feel about the show or how it ended. It was kind of a double edged sword going to DarkUFO all the time because they would have spoilers via set pictures, who was filming and stuff like that but I was so obsessed I couldn’t help myself.

I agree. Feel bad for those that came away from the show feeling cheated or letdown. It’s a very subjective thing, how we feel about a story and how it ends, and what it adds up to. I remember feeling a bit indifferent about Across the Sea when it first aired (which I think is the real episode that split the fanbase at the time, more so than The End), but it took me another rewatch of the show to appreciate that episode and how it fits into the canon and explains everything. I always felt that some of the more aggrieved fans might look more kindly on the last season and the show in general if they gave it another whirl. But I don’t begrudge those who came away with gripes generally speaking. Part of the reason for this channel was to offer people a more comprehensive look back at what the show was trying to convey, in the hopes it might help them see the overall series in a more positive light.

excellent work -- I recently finished watching Lost and naturally had a ton of questions. The series deserves more credit than I initially gave it credit for and this video really shows why. I was particularly interested in the sci-fi aspects of the series, which were very much secondary. I only wish the series could have incorporated what this video shows.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108

I get what you mean! Although I think the breadcrumbs are all there; I derive most of my explanations directly from the text or connect dots that the text presented to us. But the show had to strike an uneasy balance between being a show for hardcore mythology nerds like me and for audiences who were more interested in the love triangles and character drama. So, the show couldn't go all in on making it about the metaphysics and mythology. A lot of the concepts I touch upon in this video would not be palatable to the more casual viewer. I think the writers mostly got the balance right, but could have made more efforts to spell out a few details for posterity's sake.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Yes I agree -- the show had to strike a balance and it leaned more toward love triangles and character development, yet the sci-fi / mythology aspects were far more interesting to me. By the way, when it comes to the exit, do you believe that there's a more special connection between the Island and Tunisia rather than the other "vortices". Maybe you've brushed upon it in earlier video, if so, I might have forgotten. I remember some theories back in the day that this was theorized as the very first location of the Island before it started moving. I've been quite fascinated with Chott el Djerid in Tunisia, which is a big salt lake in the middle of Tunisia. It's been home to many hallucinations, is partly tied to Greek mythology and is the filming location for Luke Skywalker's home (not that that is relevant, but since the writers like Star Wars, I'm mentioning it). One of the closest cities is Tozeur, where ben checked in at the hotel. I am still not 100% sold on the theory, since I think I lean towards the Island's first location being in the Mediterranean or in the Persian gulf near Iraq (back when it was Mesopotamia). You might cover this in the next part, which I am very much looking forward to
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
Жыл бұрын
Yes, I have heard this theory and think it's pretty cool! Although I'm not 100% sure how it works in terms of logistics. Was the island originally part of the supercontinent of Pangea and part of the Tunisian land mass? If so, why did it move? Did the first peoples there find the light and start digging and the land mass teleported into the sea? If so, how did it acquire its vegetation, flora and fauna? Wouldn't it have been a big lump of desert and rock now floating in the ocean where nothing could grow? I'm sure over the course of thousands of years that could have changed of course, it's just something to think about in terms of the physics of it all. I have discussed Tunisia on the channel and I lean more towards what you just said; that The Island's original location was in the Mediterranean Sea (where it could be accessible to many of the cultures that find it such as Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, etc). And, if that is true, then maybe its closest geological hotspot was Tunisia and there was a fourth dimensional corridor that connected the two places together. A corridor that was never broken even after The Island first moved. Although this logic can still apply to the idea that The Island was originally part of the Tunisian landmass too. Either way, the connection between landmasses is fourth dimensional. So, I think the theory certainly has validity, I'm just not sure about some of the logistics. For me, The Island was always an island.

Just a side note, according to the 'physics' of the island the 'dead' people are not 'ghosts', they continue on in an alternate timeline so they would be more like 'mirages' or 'shadows' since they aren't affected by time. 'Ghosts' are gross.

*I THINK WALT BECAME THE NEW PROTECTOR WHEN HURLEY DIED HES BECOME THE REPLACEMENT... Thats why if u notice in the finale inside the church, MICHAEL AND WALT IS NOTICEABLY MISSING, THEY ARENT THERE.. why u ask??* Because walt is still alive and currently protecting the island/Light, AND MICHAEL CHOSE TO STAY IN THE ISLAND WITH HIS SON because when they were still BOTH alive THEY DIDNT GET THE CHANCE TO BE TOGETHER SO MUCH, like Walt was taken away from him since birth, and when they got out of the island HE BECAME ESTRANGED WITH HIS SON AGAIN BECAUSE HE CONFESSED TO WALT HE KILLED LIBBY AND ANA LUCIA... SO NOW THAT HES A GHOST AND WALT HAVING THE ABILITY TO SEE THE DEAD, THE FATHER AND SON CAN NOW FINALLY BOND IN THE ISLAND AND BE TOGETHER AGAIN FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANT/CAN.. THAT'S WHY THEY ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE CHURCH ending scene. MICHAEL IS A GHOST TRAPPED IN THE ISLAND NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE ON JUST LIKE THOSE OTHER VOICE WHISPERING GHOSTS IN THERE.. michael talked about it in 1particular episode when he was asked whats those whispers all about, and he confirmed those ghostly voices are from the dead people lingering in the island.. *SO WHAT DO U GUYS THINK OF MY THEORY?? DO U THINK IM RIGHT??* i hope the showrunners and writers of LOST SEES THIS AND SEE MY COMMENT. i hope they take me to make them a screenplay for a SEQUEL for LOST...

Preface: I love this channel and the contents. Lost ruined network TV for me. There will never be a greater network show. Now...I have to push back a bit on your cork/evil analysis. It almost seems you're flippant to the concept of faith (identifying Richard as a "Man of Faith" and that is some sort of infantile characteristic vs being a "Man of Science"). You happen to bypass the fact that Mother coerced a woman to delivering her children and then murdering the woman to serve her purpose of perpetuating guardians. She fully knew that she was the darkness that could escape the island (which is why she went to extremes to keep MIB from operating the donkey wheel). There is a religious concept of heaven and hell which is: Heaven is all light and hell is the absence of all light. So when the writers state when the pool runs dry and the light is out, they understand what they mean when they say it is "literally...hell." My point is: your scientific explanation, while correct, also marries with the very real realm of faith.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say I'm being flippant. I don't dismiss the faith explanations, I'm just giving context to them in scenes like that. And I'm not sure if you've watched any of the other videos in this series yet? I talk about faith and science and give them equal weight (literally just released a video on faith this very day!). It's not about science beating faith or vice versa. It's about faith and science reconciling one another, and I explain how and why as these videos evolve. This is just a basic introduction to the thesis. Mother's darkness is explored in "The Ancient Past" and it's a complex issue, especially when working out the timeline of everything. Once you have watched that video, and catch up with the other ones in this series, then you'll understand better what my thesis on the show is. Also, in regards to Richard, when I say he couldn't understand the mechanics of The Island, I don't mean that because he is a man of faith. I'm referring to the fact that he is from a small island in the Canaries in the mid-1800s. There was no way he could hope to understand the metaphysics of what was going on around him. He needed to learn, like anyone from that period would. Hell, even our modern Losties struggled to comprehend a lot of this stuff, and they had the benefit of 21st Century knowledge. Jacob explains The Island to Richard in a way that a religious person from 1867 would understand it. If he had started talking about determinism, Richard would have been like: "Huh?" That's what I meant. It's not a diss on faith.

I thought I was the only one that noticed 😆 great video nonetheless, but yeah it does come off as ‘any religious/mystical‘ aspects of the show are just a misunderstanding of the scientific principles at play... Even the religious texts don’t break it down for the average human to truly grasp it . Life is vibration. Vibration is measured in freaquency. If you know freaquency you know EVERYTHING. And if people knew the truth . They wouldn’t be scared of Death . Therefore could not be controlled.

Even if a person was changed, good, and righteous no matter what after committing a sin, the smoke monster spared the people who were ashamed and sorry for their sins. I learned about “the light” off shrooms … white light to be exact . Because every color or frequency comes from white light . And just like you can separate and individualize each color that comes from it. We as individuals sometimes feel separate but we come from one light source . And most definitely go or fade back into it when we die . We all are one. GOD but death is not to be feared because it’s needed to continue the cycle . Also know as the holy trinity in religion. ReBirth,life,death, rebirth, life, death 🔁 it’s why the number 3 is so important . We also have 3 part to us physical the mind and spiritual. Aka son of God the holy spirit and God the father. Every single religion talks about this in there own words since the beginning of time
