People really misuse the word Surreal in place of unreal. Surreal is derived from the art movement of surrealism. There are certainly moments in life where the term surreal is used appropriately, but when misused constantly in place of unreal. It loses its meaning.

I think it's scary because the mystery man is playing with him. Those open eyes are watching the main characters every reaction as if he's going to attack when the other person does not feel threatened. That smile is also a pure evil and very different from a smile of joy. His ability to answer that phonecall makes him seem all powerful like a god or the devil. It's something that likes to haunt you until you die. He also doesn't hide. It slowly walks up too him and stands right in his face. If the devil would want to scare me I feel he would do this.

How does anyone NOT get David Lynch?! He took a long forgotten actor like Robert Blake and turned him into an insanely terrifying villain, with nothing more than a freaking cell phone, over 20 years ago! No one remembered Blake in 1997 either, as he hadn’t appeared on TV or film since the 70’s. Now, 20 years after its release we can see firsthand how movie studios have seemingly forgotten HOW to make films that tell interesting stories. No CG, no big name stars, no monster budgets, bc I’m guessing Lynch learned his lesson from making Dune that it’s the STORY that drives a FILM. No amount of SFX or writers on staff will save a *shitty story* from failure (I’m looking at YOU, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker!) The opening moments of Lost Highway include more drama than most FILMS! Hollywood has already passed over so many talented directors and film makers who’s films we’ll never get to see, bc clowns like JJ Abrams or Justin Lin need _just one more chance_ to capture their……explosions, on film? Where is the “21st century’s Steven Spielberg”? I only ask as _neither_ of these 2 knuckleheads will be remembered for their great films, only for how much money their films made, which has also in decline! Listen up, kids! Some of the best movies you’ve never seen are available to watch, right now! Many were made long before you were born, there’s a reason critics use words like “timeless” to describe GREAT MOVIES. The Fast and the Furious folks weren’t the only folks who thought smashing up cars was pretty cool! Mad Max, easily the greatest “motor head” film ever recorded to cellulose, was made way back in 1979, _long before_ Mel Gibson became a prick. He even has an Australian accent! Perhaps Mad Max isn’t your cup of tea? Just go to IMDB and look at their Top 250 List. This list includes the highest rated films on IMDB and includes -all- most of the classics. There are even some David Lynch films on that list! If you haven’t seen films like “Eraserhead”, “Blue Velvet” or “The Elephant Man” (which won him an Oscar for Best Film), than you simply have NOT lived. Get busy! IMDB Top 250: www.imdb.com/chart/top/?ref_=nv_mv_250 P.S. I was shocked to learn the name of an _uncredited_ Executive Producer for The Elephant Man who insisted on David Lynch to write and direct the film, along with shooting the _entire film_ in black and white. I’d have never guessed his name after a million tries, as no one associates him with drama?!

This is obvious, he handed him his own phone, it could’ve been programmed to say that to anyone

Since this was released in 1997 (today (2/21) is the 20th Anniversary), our phones have more data/memory than those back then.

I get the weirdest feeling watching this. It's so deep in my subconscious and very nostalgic. It feels extremely curios and sublime and dissociative. It's like the backrooms of surrealism. I wish I could find this feeling in other film scenes. Some if you know the feeling I am speaking of and know other movies with similar weird moments please respond.

This scene is scary enough to be a short film all by itself, just like the diner scene from Mulholland Drive.

As soon as he handed the phone back you could tell he was in a panic thinking "I should have got him to put the cat out"
